Tom Lehrer
Introduction
I'd like to introduce now the featured artist of this page. I'm sure that you'll all agree without any hesitation that Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant creative genius that America has produced in almost 200 years, so perhaps a few words of biographical background might not be amiss. Endowed by nature with perhaps the most glorious baritone voice to be heard on an American stage since the memorable concert debut in 1835 of Millard Fillmore; endowed also with twelve incredibly agile fingers; Mr. Lehrer has had a long and varied career in the field of entertainment starting with nine years at Harvard University... where it was that he first decided to devote his life to what has since become a rather successful scientific project namely, the attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits.
Even before he came to Harvard, however, he was well known in academic circles for his masterly translation into Latin of The Wizard of Oz , which remains even today the standard Latin version of that work. A few years ago he was inducted... forcibly... into the United States Army and spent most of his indenture in Washington as sort of Army liaison to the Office of Naval Contemplation. About his service record he is justifiably modest, but it is known that in a short time he rose to the rank of brigadier general. However, before he could acquire a tenure, he was discharged, and owing to nepotism and intrigue, he emerged with only the rank of specialist 3rd class, which was roughly equivalent to the rank of corporal without portfolio.

Liner Notes
Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant song satirist ever recorded. You probably knew that already, but perhaps you didn't know this: His first album, Songs By Tom Lehrer , was one of the most profitable investments in the history of the music business. Recorded for an initial studio cost of $15 (15 dollars for the entire album) and initially released for sale only on and around the Harvard University campus, Songs By Tom Lehrer went on to sell 370,000 copies on Lehrer's own do-it-yourself label, one of America's biggest-selling if not the biggest-selling humorous-music album of the 1950s on any label, large or small. This compilation contains the original 1953 version of Songs By Tom Lehrer and his only other studio album, More Of Tom Lehrer , both in their entirety. Also on this CD are all of Lehrer's hard-to-find 1960 recordings with full orchestra, including one track never before released in any form and a brand-new Lehrer performance of one of his most famous (or infamous) songs, "I Got It From Agnes," which he's never before recorded commercially. Lehrer's career as an entertainer was as brief as it was brilliant. He didn't become a professional performer until 1952, just before he made his first album. He dropped out of show biz in 1960, and two years of that eight-year span were spent in the Army. Aside from a very short comeback in the mid-'60s (when he recorded his highest-charting album

TOM LEHRER HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT, WITTY AND INTELLIGENT SONG SATIRISTS OF THE PAST CENTURY. HIS FIRST ALBUM, "SONGS BY TOM LEHRER", WAS RECORDED FOR THE MEAGER COST OF $15 DOLLARS AND WENT ON TO SELL 370,000 COPIES UPON RELEASE ON HIS OWN RECORD LABEL IN 1953. AND ALL OF THIS HAPPENED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT MUCH OF LEHRER'S MATERIAL WAS CONSIDERED AT THE TIME TO BE TOO CONTROVERSIAL FOR RADIO AIRPLAY.
BORN ON APRIL 9, 1928 IN NEW YORK CITY, LEHRER TOOK PIANO LESSONS AT AN EARLY AGE. LEHRER WROTE HIS FIRST SONG PARODY, "FIGHT FIERCELY HARVARD" IN 1945 AT THE AGE OF 17. AFTER MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC PERFORMANCE IN 1952, LEHRER HAD WRITTEN ENOUGH MATERIAL DURING HIS COLLEGE YEARS AT HAVARD TO FILL OUT AN ENTIRE LP. AFTER HIS LP, "SONGS BY TOM LEHRER" WENT ON TO SELL 370,000 COPIES, SEVERAL MAJOR RECORD LABELS EXPRESSED INTEREST. LEHRER RESISTED THE OFFERS AND SET UP HIS OWN RECORD LABEL, "LEHRER RECORDS" IN 1954. DRAFTED BY THE US ARMY IN 1955, LEHRER SPENT THE NEXT THREE YEARS IN THE MILITARY.

AN EVENING (WASTED) WITH TOM LEHRER
5. Oedipus Rex
It seems that most of the songs that you hear these days on the radio played by the disk jockeys, apart from rock and roll and other children's records, tend to be motion picture title songs. Apparently producers feel that we will not attend their movies unless we have the titles well drilled into our heads in advance. Of course, we don't go anyway, but at least this way they make back on the song some of what they've lost on the picture. But, with the rise of the motion picture title song we have such hits of the past few years as The Ten Commandments Mambo Brothers Karamazov Cha-Cha Incredible Shrinking Man I Love You... I'm sure you're all familiar with these. But, a few years ago, a motion picture version appeared of Sophocles' immortal tragedy Oedipus Rex . This picture played only in the so-called art theaters, and it was not a financial success. And I maintain that the reason it was not a financial success... (laughter) you're way ahead of me... was that it did not have a title tune which the people could hum, and which would make them actually eager to attend this particular flick. So, I've attempted to supply this, and here then is the prospective title song from Oedipus Rex From the Bible to the popular song, There's one theme that we find right along; Of all ideals they hail as good, The most sublime is motherhood. There was a man though, who it seems, Once carried this ideal to extremes. He loved his mother and she loved him, And yet his story is rather grim. There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex, You may have heard about his odd complex. His name appears in

Paul D. Lehrman interviews lehrer about his recording career.

SPECIAL Web Exclusive!!
A Conversation with Tom Lehrer: the full text
instigated and transcribed by Paul D. Lehrman The following is a transcript of a conversation between myself and the great satiricial songwriter Tom Lehrer, on September 7, 1997, at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This conversation was also the basis for my Insider Audio column in the December, 1997, issue of Mix magazine. Lehrer's first two self-produced albums, along with various bonus tracks, are on a new CD from Rhino Records, and it was because of this record's release that Lehrer, who normally keeps a very low profile, agreed to a series of interviews with various publications, of which mine was one of the last. Thanks to Rhino Records, Mix magazine, and of course, Tom Lehrer. (Read Lehrer's response to the original article here
There are some other transcripts of conversations with you on the 'Net, but they look a little weird. I did a profile of you for the Boston Globe Magazine about 13 years ago, when the show "Tomfoolery" was opening in Boston. The article came out well, but you didn't like the picture that accompanied it.
I know the previous article was in the middle of winter because the photographer, whose name eludes me fortunately, wanted me to come to his studio so he could get to know me. He liked to get to know his subjects so he could really do justice to the photograph. I thought "Oh God", but I didn't want to rock the boat. They had put money in Tomfoolery, so I didn't want to make a thing of it, so I said okay, I'll go along with this. But fortunately my car broke down, so by the time I had it fixed, it was too late, so he came here and did all these weird pictures. So I learned my lesson then.
