One of the division's earliest sources of information on actresses is the Robert Merry collection (50 items; 1792-1850) [ catalog record ], containing engravings, clippings, and notes relating to Merry's wife, actress Ann Brunton Merry (1769-1808). Also included are playbills, 1801-17, from several Philadelphia theaters, which list the names of several actresses. Researchers interested in women's theatrical endeavors in the mid-to-late nineteenth century have more sources to mine. Complementing the papers of Fanny Kemble (1809-1893) in the collection of her grandson Owen Wister (see Literature and Journalism ), is a separate group of the actress's papers (75 items; 1829-74) [ catalog record ]. This small collection contains correspondence relating to her 1849 divorce from southern plantation owner Pierce Butler, whose ownership of slaves she found abhorrent, and two volumes of material she used for her 1835

History of the Mirror Rep.
The Mirror Repertory Company, aka Mirror Theatre Ltd., was founded in l983. It was a daring return to the European theatre style of alternating repertory theatre a different play each night as in the ballet and the opera. The Mirror Repertory Company was founded through the vision of Sabra Jones McAteer, supported by others such as John Strasberg, then Ms. Jones McAteer's husband, who represented the tradition of The Group Theatre, by Eva Le Gallienne, who represented the tradition of not only alternating repertory but also of an actor-manager run theatre, by Geraldine Page, who represented the best of mid-twentieth century acting, and by the Hon. Anthony D. Marshall, former Ambassador to Kenya and the Seychelles, all of whom signed incorporation papers for the non-profit company. Harold Clurman was also an inspiration. Laurance S. Rockefeller was the founding patron. There had been no such company since the APA Phoenix, headed by the late Ellis Raab, though there were examples of the art form in other states, such as Tyrone Guthrie's theatre in Minnesota. The Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center was built for repertory theatre but never functioned as such. As a prelude to the Mirror Rep's first season, Ms. Jones McAteer and the Hon. Anthony D. Marshall mounted a Broadway production of Eva Le Gallienne's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which opened at the Virginia Theatre, giving Kate Burton her first Broadway job and starring Ms. Le Gallienne as the White Queen. WNET 13 invested in the production, the first sort of participation of a non-profit organization in a Broadway company. ALICE IN WONDERLAND later became a production of WNET 13, again starring Kate Burton, with her father, Richard Burton, appearing as the White Knight, the only time they ever appeared together on film. Others in the televised special included the late Colleen Dewhurst, the late Eve Arden, Austin Pendleton, and many other luminaries. ALICE IN WONDERLAND on Broadway also gave a first job to Mary Stuart Masterson, who played a card, and to Nicholas Martin, the director of the recent production of HEDDA GABLER, starring Kate Burton.

The Berkshire Theatre Festival: 1928 - 2005 When I think of the history of the Berkshire Theatre Festival, two women immediately jump to mind: Mabel Choate and Eva LeGallienne. The first was responsible for insuring the health and welfare of our wonderful Main Stage building, which was designed in 1888 as the Stockbridge Casino by Stanford White of Red Velvet Swing fame; and the second, the legendary actress Eva LeGallienne, opened the BTF with her production of The Cradle Song The Cradle Song , starring Eva LeGallienne, the legendary actress, regional theatre crusader and the only female director on Broadway. During their second season the two launched a theatrical school, welcoming Jane Wyatt as one of their first students. Katharine Hepburn had small roles in two plays and James Cagney was in Oh, Boy

Sharon's Nocturnal Reads Home Book Club Nostalgia Catalogs ... The Kids' Pick Sharon's Pick When was the last time you stayed up all night with a good book? Sharon is often up with a good book, in part because her internal clock wakes her up at 3:18 a.m. consistently. So what do you do when you don't feel like working, the sun isn't out, and you can't sleep? Read, of course. Here's what my friend Sharon has been reading in the middle of the night. This is a piece of romantic fluff based on the lives of the Ladies of Llangollen, who defied their good Irish families to live together in a cottage in Wales. The difficulties of getting to this place, both physically and emotionally, are fun reading, and the ladies' committment to each other admirable. Eventually, the beautiful gardens that they created become a favorite stopping place for artists and the socially acceptable, and their tales of meeting famous people are amusing. While the basis of this tale is factual, it's hard to categorize the book as anything other than romance, and I must say, it's been awhile since I read fun trash of this ilk. Nothing dirty, mind you, just a fun quick read. Grumbach, Doris.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND ME: In My Anecdotage
Eli Wallach
Harcourt
Memoir
ISBN: 0151011893
Like many men his age, Eli Wallach has become anecdotal, as he freely acknowledges in his subtitle. This autobiography, therefore, isn't one of those arrogant books that bully you with pushy claims that "you can't put it down," books that demand grueling hours of sustained reading when you might prefer to take a break now and then to watch the news or have a sandwich.
The high anecdote content of Wallach's book means that you can clap it shut just about anytime you like, because anecdotes are meant to be followed by a pause of a few moments' duration, like a tacit bar in a musical score, allowing readers time to chuckle or reflect or take a sip of restorative. Under no circumstances would anyone want to interrupt the author in mid-anecdote. He's a richly gifted raconteur who could draw a crowd just by telling about the last time he had his teeth cleaned.
And of course, after an anecdote ends, it isn't long before another one begins. (Brilliant!) Was it Wallach who said, "I got a million of 'em!"?
Despite his long and successful career, Wallach is possessed of sufficient humility to accept the fact that in some of his stories he plays only a minor role. When he talks about working with Charles Laughton, for example, he recognizes that it's Wallach telling about working with Laughton, not the other way around. Likewise, some of the most entertaining bits are his recollections of Tennessee Williams, Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller, Yul Brenner, Elia Kazan, and many others.
