"a lover to the stars," "a social butterfly," "the dyke at the top of the stairs," "the greatest starfucker ever." These are typical descriptions of Mercedes de Acosta . She was notorious for walking the streets of New York in mannish pants, pointed shoes trimmed with buckles, tricorn hat, and cape. Her chalk white face, deep-set eyes, thin red lips, and jet black hair slicked back with brilliantine prompted Tallulah Bankhead to call her Countess Dracula. After Cecil Beaton accompanied her to the theater one night in 1930, he wrote in his diary that he sensed people looking at him and questioning why he associated with "that furious lesbian." She often boasted of her sexual prowess, saying "I can get any woman from any man." There was perhaps justification for Alice B. Toklas's observation, "Say what you will about Mercedes de Acosta , she's had the most important women of the twentieth century." Even though these women included Isadora Duncan, Eva Le Gallienne, Greta Garbo, and Marlene Dietrich, she

"When Mercedes de Acosta met men who ran the theaters, they did not want to work with a strong woman who loved women. Men found her too overpowering." And when suggestions were offered to Mercedes on how to make her scripts more commercial, "she would say, 'To hell with them.'" - Ram Gopal Inspired by romantic relationships with Alla Nazimova and Isadora Duncan, and especially with Eva Le Gallienne, Mercedes de Acosta embarked on a career in the theater as a playwright. She had already published three volumes of poetry and a novel, but in the next decade, she wrote ten plays and one musical. Four of her plays were actually produced. One, a play about Joan of Arc, starred her lover at the time, Eva Le Gallienne, and premiered in Paris in 1925. By the time the play closed in Paris, Mercedes and LeGallienne had broken up. LeGallienne, who was very ambitious and wanted to found her own theatre company, had landed a wealthy patron who would eventually bankroll her theatre venture in New York. Having that theatre was more important to her than continuing her relationship with Mercedes. Devastated by the rejection, Mercedes resumed working on a play she had begun several years earlier

1982/3 - A BROADWAY REVIVAL AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION

Eva Le Gallienne's classic stage version of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" has been around for a good number of years and there are records of it being performed as long ago as 1932. The most remembered performance was at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in 1947 with dancer Bambi Linn in the lead role.
Bambi Linn looks up as Eva Le Gallienne, playing the White Queen, flies in.
Gallienne revived the adaptation on and around Broadway in the late seventies with Kate Burton playing Alice. Bambi Linn, by this time in her fifties but still involved in dance as a choreographer, was movement co-ordinator for this revival. In 1982 it was adapted as a play for television. Kirk Browning directed, Kate Burton reprised the role of Alice, and her father, Richard Burton, played the White Knight, along with an 'unforgettable all-star cast'. The 1947 musical score by Richard Addinsell and Jonathan Tunick was retained.
Also in the cast were Eve Arden, Kaye Ballard, Maureen Stapleton, James Coco, Tony Cummings

Music by Richard Addinsell with Bambi Linn as Alice Performed in 1947 at the Majestic Theatre, the premier 'musical' theatre in New York, the cast included William Windom, Julie Harris and Eli Wallach. British-born Eva Le Gallienne was a noted actress between 1914 and 1926. She then abandoned stardom, went on to become a great theatrical producer and was responsible for a number of significant productions. Not only did she adapt both of Lewis Carroll's Alice stories into this play, she directed it, played the narrator AND the White Queen (right). 21-year old Bambi Linn as Alice (left) was a seasoned Broadway performer in musicals and making a big name for herself as a dancer. The set designs by Florida Friebus were "based on the Tenniel drawings". This was quite literally the case as the sets were painted with typical Tennielian cross hatching which even extended to the costumes which made it look as if all the characters, with the exception of Alice, were actually drawn. Note the detail on the hat.

The Great Depression Part Two In August of 1930, Cardinal Hayes, heading up the Catholic Theater League, attacked a number of productions as "obscene". In addition, Frank Gillmore, then president of Actor's Equity also spoke out against "salacious" shows. Gillmore was afraid that such shows would increase the argument for public censorship. In an effort to thwart the possibility of imposed censorship, Gillmore and others sponsored a program similar to one already adopted by Hollywood for self-censorship. Ed Wynn, who brought Simple Simon to the Shuberts' Philadelphia theater, refused to appear until the showcards for the next attraction, Earl Carroll's Sketch Book , were removed from the lobby. Wynn was afraid that the photos would upset the family trade and discourage business. This on-going war of the writers vs. the righteous would not have a specific conclusion, as we know from recent events with the production of Corpus Christi Though it would seem that this should have been a decade of loss for artistic theater, it was actually a period of major transformation and growth. While the economic state of the country worsened, the Broadway community rallied again. An estimated 25,000 theater people were displaced by the effects of the depression, the majority in New York. In some theaters, prices were dropped to a 25-cent minimum, with a $1.00 top price. Actors and producers experimented with repertory productions, to keep as many working as often as possible, and to keep as many productions as possible active.

The 1920s and 1930s Unlike London, Broadway did not have regular annual visits from Peter Pan . In fact, following the final night of Maude Adams' 1915/16 season, New Yorkers would have to wait nine years until the show returned, this time with Ziegfeld Follies star Marilyn Miller. The Ziegfeld touch was apparent in the new production, with over $300,000 spent on recreating the sets familiar from the earlier version. John Crook's score was used once more, though still with interpolations, and yet another new Jerome Kern song, "The Sweetest Thing in Life". A large British contingent was shipped over, to give the cast a ring of authenticity, and the show previewed in Buffalo, finally opening in New York at the Knickerbocker Theatre on November 6th 1924. Graceful though Miss Miller undoubtedly was, her performance in the title role fell flat. In the words of Bruce Hanson, author of

Excerpts from New Nightingale New Rose: Poems from the Divan of Hafiz, Translated by Richard Le Gallienne
Hafiz was born around 1320AD in Shiraz, Persia. He was a contemporary of other fourteenth century notables such as Chaucer and Petrarch and, in the Islamic world, of the infamous conqueror Tamerlane, and of the poets Ibn-I-Yamin
Shams-ud-din Mohammed. Hafiz lived in a time of political commotion, of coups and upheavals, though Shiraz escaped the worst results of the invasions of the Mongols and the Tartars.
His father died when he was relatively young and he had two older brothers; between the three of them they supported the family. Hafiz was bright, yet he had to work first for a draper and then at a bakery. He is said to have written his first poem by completing a poem begun by his untalented uncle.
While there is little in the way of hard historical fact, a number of anecdotes are told of Hafiz, many of them with a legendary or symbolic quality. The most famous of them is as follows. When he was twenty-one, and working as a baker, Hafiz was delivering bread in a prosperous district of Shiraz.

An American Revolution
The 75-year-old Berkshire Theatre Festival looks to its star-spangled past to inspire a still-fermenting future
Photo by Kevin Sprague by Sarah Hart Herman Melville. W.E.B. DuBois. Edith Wharton. Norman Rockwell. Not to mention a handful of buildings that predate the Boston Tea Party. The signposts alone in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts read like an American heritage coffee table book—replete with a Kodak-ready backdrop of gently rolling hills, winding roads and dense trees that part for vistas that could inspire any number of revolutions. This is America before there were cell phones. It's America attuned to nature—and certainly accustomed to culture, with Big Art names like Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow rivaling the historic American place-names. American Primitive , William Gibson's epistolary paean to John and Abigail Adams, and closed with Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins , a black-comedy musical chronicle of some of the nation's less-than-satisfied customers. I'm visiting this haven of Americana on the opening weekend at Berkshire Theatre Festival (Memorial Day weekend for the rest of the country)—cold and rainy, but to paraphrase James Taylor, "the Berkshires seem dreamlike" on account of the mist. Executive director Kate Maguire is outlining some of the theatre's history, along with her vision for artistic success, with a childlike enthusiasm. In spite of a stylish suit and business-like bob, Maguire appears all wide smile and glinting eyes. Her sheer joy in the theatre is contagious; even when she's talking about the more difficult aspects of leading a venerable institution with 75 years of performances under its belt, you can see she's having fun.
