The Jim McGreevey I used to know
By LAWRENCE MARTIN Saturday, August 14, 2004, Page A15 The first time I saw Jim McGreevey was at the Kennedy School library at Harvard University in the fall of 1981. The future governor of New Jersey, then 25, walked into the library with a flourish. (He did everything with a flourish.) Accompanying him was a raven-haired beauty who looked like she had just stepped off the cover of Vogue. The full text of this article has 784 words

E-Mail This Article Published on Thursday, July 29, 2004 by the Globe and Mail /Canada Patriot Game, Media Shame by Lawrence Martin At the Democratic convention this week and the coming Republican fest, rest assured of one thing: No one will mention a crux issue how patriotism supplanted journalism in America. For its coverage of Iraq, The New York Times has publicly expressed its regret for being a conduit of White House propaganda. Dan Rather of CBS has lamented how "patriotism run amok" sabotaged his country's media freedoms. Some others have honorably done the same. The current edition of Foreign Affairs has an article that raises a hot question: whether the war that was waged to disarm a dictator who was already disarmed would have happened if the media had done their job. The analysis by George Lopez and David Cartwright charts how Western sanctions and inspections throughout the 1990s had turned Iraq into a sickly wimp about as daunting as Denmark. Its collapse into obsolescence, the sheering of its defense budget from $15-billion to $1-billion, were all on the public record. But the American media, jingoized by 9/11, largely ignored it. They went, instead, with the "gathering threat" tales the Bush White House fed them, a diet of disinformation that gave the President the needed support for a war that led to the slaughter of thousands of civilians. Had the media dug, had they consistently countered the Bush hyperbole with known fact, that support probably would have been lacking.

    PREFACE
Unless you score 80% or better on the short scuba quiz , you can probably benefit from reading this book. Knowledge of basic underwater physiology is critical to diving safety, of course, and the subject is taught in every certification class. For example, the first rule of diving don't hold your breath is based on Boyle's law of gas pressures, which predicts that a scuba diver's lungs will expand if breath is held on ascent. The consequence can be a serious and even fatal over-expansion injury.
Although all certification manuals and general scuba books review underwater physiology, the coverage is necessarily limited. Typically, one chapter is devoted to the subject. Important effects of altered physiology, such as decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, are covered only briefly.
As a recreational diver and pulmonary physician, I believe there is need for a book that more fully explains this material. Not a textbook for the doctor, engineer or scientist, but a book any recreational diver can understand. A book that answers questions frequently pondered by the recreational diver. After searching and finding no such book, I decided to write one! Scuba Diving Explained is intended for all sport divers because the material is important for all of us, from beginner to people with years of experience.

Is a PaO of 28 mm Hg abnormal? How about 55 mm Hg? 95 mm Hg? To clinically interpret PaO one has to also know the patient's PaCO , FIO (fraction of inspired oxygen) and the P B (barometric pressure), all components of the equation for PAO 1-FIO PAO = FIO (P B -P ) - PACO [ FIO R Despite this undisputed physiologic fact physicians sometimes make clinical decisions

Cyanosis is a bluish or purplish tinge to the skin and mucous membranes (see Images 1-2 ). Before the era of rapid blood gas analysis, clinicians often assessed hypoxemia on clinical grounds alone, primarily by looking for cyanosis in the perioral area and fingers. Clinical assessment of hypoxemia is now known to be notoriously unreliable for the following reasons:
    • A host of factors, from natural skin pigment to room lighting, can affect detection of cyanosis. As with many other physical examination findings, significant interobserver variation occurs in detecting cyanosis. Some physicians diagnose cyanosis as an indicator of hypoxemia when it cannot be present (ie, the patient has normal oxygen saturation), while other physicians miss cyanosis when it should be present (ie, very low oxygen saturation with normal hemoglobin).
    • Approximately 5 g/dL of unoxygenated hemoglobin in the capillaries generates the dark blue color appreciated clinically as cyanosis. For this reason, patients who are anemic may be hypoxemic without showing any cyanosis.

Like most of the lads from the Nipigon area, Lawrence was eager to get signed up come war time. And like a lot of these enthusiastic fellows, it didn't take the army long to find out he was too young for service and send him home. For a whole year, as he waited for his 18th birthday to roll around. He spent his time in the bush as a lumber jack. In the winter of 1942, Lawrence was cutting trees and then skidding logs with horses. When spring came the river was full of logs, and Lawrence was on hand for the river drive, then on the boats bringing the logs to the mill. Hard work was not new to this young man waiting for the day he would be of age to go and enlist again.
When Lawrence got back to Canada he, like a lot of boys from the area. Volunteered for duty in the Pacific. Because the fighting in the Pacific was so different from that in Europe, he took special training in Macdonald for the tour. This was at the tail end of the war and before he shipped out the war had ended. Only too glad to hear that victory had been obtained, Lawrence was discharged and headed home.
After the home-coming celebrations he settled back into his old job, the logging industry.Nine years later, Lawrence found himself becoming more and more worried about what was happening in Asia. His strong beliefs against Communism and knowing that things in Korea did not look good, he volunteered again to serve his country. In April of 1954, Corporal Lawrence Martin left his wife and two small sons, knowing that he must fight to secure their future in a free nation.

Previous: How Google plans to rank news - and why the alts are worried Next: World press on the London bombers Ignore the terrorists: Lawrence Martin by Bill Doskoch Permanent Link Cosmos Writing in today's Globe and Mail , columnist Lawrence Martin thinks the Western media is being played like a fiddle by terrorists. An excerpt:
It used to be the Western media could write about world conflict with some degree of historical perspective. Today, they invest the enemy with astounding mythological powers. With hysterical comparisons and hyperbolic headlines 'We can't retreat!' they are writing the script just the way the terrorists, who are all about creating a psychology of fear, would dream it. They have the enemy believing it can bring the world to a near-standstill with a subway blast. While Martin didn't mean to minimize the loss of life, "the toll from terrorism in the West since 9/11 is a trickle, and that by any standard of war, disease and pestilence or the weekly death toll from the war in Iraq it ranks low on the scale," he says.

In 1995, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Lawrence Martin 's musical career spanned those desperate years and he spoke to Anthony Parsons with an authentic Voice From The Past It would be very comforting to know that a trombone playing career divided between two of London's finest orchestras would guarantee that when you reached your ninetieth year, you be a picture of health, too busy with life and forward plans to have a television set in the house, able to drive your car up to London if you felt like it, have perfect recall, and look at least 20 years younger. Lawrence Martin's next birthday will take him to the ninetieth milestone, and although he personifies all those things, unfortunately for the rest of us he can't put it all down to a lifetime of trombone playing. In fact, giving up the profession may even be the secret. Lawrence grew up in a musical family at Hailsham, Sussex. "I found a viola in a cupboard upstairs at home that had been used in the string quartet that father used to play in," he began his musical history. "I wanted to learn to play it as thoroughly as possible and had lessons with Adolf Hervé, who had studied at the Brussels Conservatoire. He wasn't a great teacher because he played along with me all the time and I couldn't hear my own playing clearly. He was going back again over the studies that he had learned as a student, and I felt I was leaning on him too much."
