Welcome to Dignity Virtual Village
Dignity is a formerly mobile tent city in Portland, Oregon, well on its way to becoming a green, sustainable, urban village. It is home for people who might otherwise inhabit doorways and sidewalks. Dignity provides a peaceful community, a clean environment, a center, and safety. Please read more about our project and how you can get involved. We truly appreciate your interest and support! On December 16th of the year 2000, a group of eight homeless men and women pitched five tents on public land and Camp Dignity, later to become Dignity Village, was born. We came out of the doorways of Portland's streets, out from under the bridges, from under the bushes of public parks, we came openly with nothing and no longer a need to hide as Portland's inhumane and Draconian camping ban had just been overturned on two constitutional grounds. We came armed with a vision of a better future for ourselves and for all of Portland, a vision of a green, sustainable urban village where we can live in peace and improve not only the condition of our own lives but the quality of life in Portland in general. We came in from the cold of a December day and we refuse to go back to the way things were. Read more Latest Updates:

Library Service Area Executive Committee September 9, 2004 Minutes Present: Karen Burns, Jane Campagna, Anita Cox, Darrell DeBoom, Roy Kenagy, Jim Larson, Lily Lau, Jill Miller, Emily Navarre, Eunice Riesburg, Virginia Ruzicka, Linda Scarth, Barb Shultz, Carole Stanger, John Teget, Emily Weaver, Mary Wegner, Hank Zaletel President Jim Larson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. John Teget moved that everything except for State Library Report be moved to the end of the agenda except for items 6 and 7. It died for the lack of a second. Carole Stanger moved that the agenda be approved as presented. Hank Zaletel seconded. The motion carried. Minutes for the July 20, 2004 Board Meeting and Retreat were presented. Virginia Ruzicka moved and Jill Miller seconded that minutes be accepted as presented. The motion passed. State Library Update: Mary Wegner gave the State Librarian’s report.
    • State Budget Information: The State Library of Iowa has a request from Governor Vilsack’s office for information showing a ranked list of what is provided to Iowans. Karen Burns has done an incredible amount of work on the LSA budgets. The State Library has provided two offers in the Governor’s budgeting process. Mary is unsure how this will work out. They are supposed to have feedback from the buying teams by September 10 th . It is very important that the library community work together to support the ILA Governmental Affairs Committee’s legislative agenda. Mary distributed a draft copy of the GAC agenda. Mary stated that we need to advocate for the State Library and the LSA’s because those programs "below the line" for funding may not be funded. The Executive Council should be prepared to talk about the effect the LSA’s have on Iowa citizens.
