But from its stunning downtown skyline to neighborhoods of wonderful architecture, the city has a rich cultural foundation and an artistic community that is expanding rapidly, thanks to community organizers and the availability of cheap real estate.
Gallery on 43rd Street, owned by weaver and neighborhood pioneer Mary Coleman, is popular, as are Studio K Gallery on Butler Street, which features jewelry, sculpture and pottery, and Metalier Fine Metals Studio, tucked away on Plummer Street. You can watch glassblowing at Gallery G Glass on Liberty Avenue, and artists share space at Penn Avenue Pottery.
In the Garfield/Friendship area to the east, the four-year-old Pittsburgh Glass Center on Penn Avenue is building a glassmaking community in the city, which used to be a center of the glass industry.
The Friendship-East Liberty area is where Artists and Cities Inc. established its first development, the Spinning Plate Artists Lofts and gallery. The nonprofit group is about to complete its third project, the Blackbird Lofts and Artist Studios, a studio/retail rental and condo building at 36th and Butler streets in the Design Zone.

Jill E. Barad succeeded John W. Amerman as chief executive as of Jan. 1, 1997. During Amerman's 10 years as chief executive, Mattel sales quadrupled and profits increased tenfold as the company expanded around the world. Barad was Amerman's No. 2 for four years.
During 17 years at Mattel, Barad has risen from product manager to one of America's most powerful women executives. She made her mark largely by re-establishing Barbie dolls as America's most enduring toy franchise.
A survey in the January Working Woman magazine Barad was the named nation's third-highest compensated woman executive in America. The survey said her total compensation in 1994 was $4.67 million.
"I'm in an environment that rewards good performance," she said. "If you're doing a good job and you're in an environment that's looking for good people, the opportunities will be there for us."

She subsequently attended Magdalen College and received her D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1985. She joined the faculty at Harvard the same year. A major focus of Professor Hooley’s research interests concern psychosocial (especially family) predictors of psychiatric relapse in patients with severe psychopathology such as schizophrenia, depression, and borderline personality disorder. She is also interested in self-harming behavior (cutting, burning) and pain. Currently, Professor Hooley is using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore (1) how healthy people and individuals who are vulnerable to depression process emotionally challenging verbal comments from family members and (2) how patients with borderline personality disorder process a variety of affectively challenging auditory and visual stimuli. Road work ahead

    Taking a Detour through ArtSpot
    BY FELICIA FEASTER
Anyone who's driven through Atlanta knows instinctively that the path between point A and point B is riddled with orange traffic cones, screeching brakes and detours.
Detour , an exhibition curated by artist Jill Larson at the Inman Park gallery ArtSpot , does a little conceptual off-roading with the notion of bypass and diverted routes. The show is a summit of Atlanta and Pittsburgh area artists concerned with life's tendency to render well-laid plans circuitous.
Almost all of the work in Detour is unified by a simplicity of materials and design that suggests artists have taken their cue from the road signs that dictate diverted courses. That visual economy is probably best illustrated by Paul Rosenblatt's wry "Home Improvement," which at first could be mistaken for something Detour 's installation crew left behind.
Rosenblatt has created a tower of ladders stacked head to head, as if indicating the sheer Sisyphian, brow-sweating angst of fixing the essentially unfixable. Like the coats of paint and hours of hammering that never achieve the owner's ambition, "Home Improvement" suggests a metaphor for life as a quest for completion perpetually thwarted by obstacles.
