Frances Langford Dies At 92; Singer Cheered Troops During WWII
By Adam Bernstein Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, July 12, 2005; Page B06 Wistful-voiced singer Frances Langford, 92, who died of congestive heart failure July 11 at her home in Jensen Beach, Fla., brought a warm vocal caress to millions of servicemen during her extensive USO tours with Bop Hope during World War II. As the "Sweetheart of the Fighting Fronts," Ms. Langford undertook some of the most dangerous morale-boosting work of the war as she trouped alongside Hope, guitarist Tony Romano and comedian Jerry Colonna.
On USO tours, Frances Langford often followed Bob Hope with her signature song, "I'm in the Mood for Love." She also starred with Don Ameche in the radio comedy "The Bickersons." (1943 Photo By Associated Press)

Langford appeared in 30 Hollywood movies, including "Broadway Melody," "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "The Hit Parade." She played herself in her final film, 1954's "The Glenn Miller Story."

Singer/actress Frances Langford who was best known for the song 'I'm in the Mood For Love' and for entertaining American G.I.s with Bob Hope during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, has died at the age of 92.
Langford considered herself more of a singer than actor, but she appeared in approximately 30 films and was a star on the radio comedy show 'The Bickersons' with Don Ameche.
Bob Hope considered Langford one of his 'three gypsies' who would entertain American troops worldwide. The other two were comic Jerry Colonna and guitarist Tony Romano.
'The greatest thing in my life was entertaining the troops,' Langford told the 'Palm Beach Post' after her retirement.
In 1941, she made her first appearance on Hope's radio show and started visiting the troops with him shortly thereafter.
While she loved entertaining the troops, being so close to wars put Miss Langford in some very difficult spots at times. Twice she was on planes that experienced engine problems while taking her to or from theaters of war.
Langford married three times, first to actor Jon Hall and then to Ralph Evinrude who died in 1986. Eight years later, she married Harold Stuart who survives her.

Frances Langford will forever be remembered for her dedication to the war effort during the 1940s. As a regular member of Bob Hope 's USO tour she became a favorite of American troops around the world. Though Langford spent most of her Hollywood career appearing in minor films she introduced several major hits, including ''I'm in the Mood for Love'' and ''Hooray for Hollywood.'' Her career on radio and television kept her busy through the early 1960s. Born and raised in Florida, Langford made her professional debut on local Tampa radio in 1930, where she was discovered by singer Rudy Vallee . Vallee offered her a spot on his network radio program and took her to New Orleans. There she made her first national broadcast, earning a contract with station WOR in New York. She later signed with NBC. In 1932 Langford made her first appearance on the silver screen in the musical short The Subway Symphony . Her film career didn't begin in earnest, however, until 1935 when she co-starred in the motion picture
