To Ann Landers: There is Hope
Syndicated columnist Ann Landers wrote a column last May which as has been her customaffirmed homosexuality, and at the same time, provided her readers with misinformation. Ms. Landers said that "homosexuals are born, not made. They cannot change themselves." She told her readers that 10% of the population is considered to be homosexual. Psychiatrist Alberto Montes, M.D. from Honolulu, Hawaii wrote Ann Landers a response, which said in part: "I was very disappointed with the well-meant but erroneous response that you gave the 15-year-old adolescent tortured by his homosexual impulses...You told him, 'Homosexuals are born, not made. You need counseling to help you accept yourself as you are.' "The little bit of hope that he might have wanted from you may have been shattered...Considerable advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of the psychological conflicts (usually unconscious) underlying homosexuality...There is hope for them! I have treated them. There is no scientific evidence that they were born that way. Such an idea leads to hopelessness!

Teens: a lost cause or a ray of hope?
Dear Ann Landers: When I read your glowing assessment of today's teen-agers, I decided you are either looking at the world through some mighty powerful rose-colored glasses, or you are completely off your rocker.
Today's American youth are the most stupid, impolite, self-centered people on the planet. They know everything about computers and nothing about history, literature, geography or the arts. Half of them are unable to name their own state capitol. They drive like lunatics, and eat like pigs. Their music is imbecilic and deafening. Most of their so-called art is garbage. Their trademark is four-letter words.
If we are ever in another war, it will have to be fought by men over 25. The 17-to-24-year-olds are spaced out on pot and heavier drugs and could never pass the physical. I don't know where or how this generation lost its way, but it IS lost, and I see no hope for these young people.
A Midwestern Realist
Dear Midwestern: Your off-the-wall, wild-eyed pessimism is depressing, and you have a strangely one-dimensional view of today's youth.

    Ann Landers

Dear Ann: This is a hard letter for me to write. My husband and I are in our 70s and have raised two children who are a disgrace. We waited until we were over 30 to marry because each of us was taking care of an elderly parent. We were thrilled to have children and tried to follow all the rules so we could set a good example. Our children were raised with love, religion, family values and discipline. We lived in a nice home in a fine neighborhood, and they attended excellent schools. Now, we are faced with an unusual problem and need your advice. My husband and I received an unexpected, sizable inheritance. Our children are not aware of this. We do not want them to have it when we die. We have no other relatives, and our friends are as old as we are. We are considering our church and perhaps the Salvation Army. We have made a list of people mentioned in our local newspaper who have done good deeds with no expectation of being rewarded and think perhaps we might give some money to them. We would like to feel we have really made a big difference in someone's life.

Best Father's Day gift is wanting to grow up like Dad
DEAR Readers: This appeared on Father's Day 1991, and I thought it was time to print it again. It's one of my all-time favorites. Dear Ann Landers: My husband received this letter from our 13-year-old son last Father's Day. Perhaps you would like to share it with your readers. I asked "Jimmy" if I could send this letter to you. He replied, "Heck no. I would die if my name showed up in the paper." When I told him I would ask you not to print his name, he said, "OK, but don't tell the relatives." So here it is, Ann. My husband had a hard time holding back the tears when he read it, and so did I. No Name in Omaha Dear Omaha: Thank you for sending your son's letter. It is truly one of the sweetest letters I've ever read. I'm sure my readers will love it. Dear Dad: I wish I had some money so I could buy you a neat present for Father's Day, but I am broke, so please let this letter be your present. Even though you don't wear a suit and tie to work like Tommy's dad, I wouldn't trade you for anything. Tommy's dad brings work home from his office every night and even on weekends. They never go to the zoo or play ball in the park or go fishing off the pier. I like the way you talk to me when I am down. You always make me see that things aren't so bad and that they will get better, and of course, they always do. I like the way you don't let me get away with much. Sometimes I act mad when I don't get my way, but deep down I am glad you are strict. I would be scared to death if you let me do anything I want.
