Home Adults Teens Kids ... Contact BLAME IT On ANN LANDERS by Jillian Leslie Note from the webmaster: I wrote and published this piece on the web a month before Ann Landers died. No matter what people thought of her advice, she was bold, gutsy and helped many people find their way. This humor piece will remain online as a tribute to her memory. ~~Jillian Talking about toilets makes me feel flushed. Not exactly dinner conversation, is it? But this essay is a juicy admission of deep, dark shame, so slip your slice of pepperoni pizza back in the box because I'm about to make a confessiona confession that's been in the making for thirty-nine years. (I obviously don't ascribe to the school of thought which says "Let the past go.") Public bathrooms traumatize me. I blame Ann Landers for my fear. Yes, I'm talking about the famous Chicago-based advice columnist, the lady, who on many occasions flogs her readersand occasionally herselfwith wet noodles. Please join me in the Wayback machine as we pull the lever and travel back to the summer of 1963. My best friend Mandy and I (name changed to protect the guilty), decided to leave our suburban homes for the day and ride the Northwestern Railroad, destination the Chicago Loop. We only were twelve-years-old but remember: those were innocent times and we were very good girls who didn't talk to strangers, obeyed the rules and were as inseparable as Winnie the Pooh and his honey jar.

By regarding such productions as social facts, the analyst is relieved of the burden of demonstrating what meanings these productions have for the artist and his [sic] audience. It is too frequently assumed that such meanings can be identified by a capable analyst, independent of the interpretations brought to such works by the artist or his audiences. In my judgement, artist productions must be seen as interactional creations; the meanings of which arise out of the interactions directed to them by the artist and his audience. Ann Landers
Dear Ann Landers: Your letter about the woman whose husband was a cross-dresser was right on target. People often are afraid of those who are different, whether the difference is racial, religious or gender. That is why minorities are the target of so much discrimination. Cross-dressers need protection from discrimination as much as any other minority.
The woman who wrote said her husband only recently discovered he was a cross-dresser. This is not unusual. Many of us cross-dress as children or teens but suppress the desire as we grow older. By the time we reach our 40s, the suppression can create deep anger and frustration. My wife is tolerant of my cross-dressing but not particularly understanding. We are in counseling, trying to keep our marriage together. By the way, Ann, we prefer "cross-dresser," not transvestite. Transvestite is a label coined by the psychiatric profession and implies that we are sick.
Joann in N.Y.
Dear N.Y.: I'm sure your letter educated a lot of people today. P.S. I would not use the word "sick," but cross-dressing is definitely a deviation from the norm.

Ann Landers VOICE ONE: I’m Mary Tillotson. VOICE TWO: And I’m Steve Ember with the VOA Special English program PEOPLE IN AMERICA. Today, we tell about advice writer Ann Landers. ((THEME)) VOICE ONE: Many newspapers in the United States have writers who give advice. Some are experts about issues like gardening, food, health or money. People will write to the expert about a problem and he or she will try to solve it. There also are advice writers who deal with the more personal issues in life. They answer questions about all kinds of things—love, children, mental health problems, morals. This was the kind of advice column that Esther Lederer wrote. She wrote it under the name of Ann Landers.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Dear Ann Landers Esther Pauline Lederer has given a lot more than free advice to America. Since 1955, "Ann Landers' has provided some 85 million readers with an outlet for their opinions, a friendly but objective shoulder to cry on, a source of valuable information and a mirror in which to view the changes society has gone through in the past three decades. In Dear Ann Landers (Contemporary Books, $17.95) David Grossvogel reviews and analyzes more than 35,000 letters Landers printed in her column, giving the reader a good look at the woman behind the advice as well as a lesson in recent social history. Though the book includes an interview with Ann Landers, we learn more about her in Grossvogel's analysis of the issues she examined in her column. Drawing from her self-described "solid Midwestern values' and an ever-vocal readership, Landers used "generally agreed upon standards' to resolve trivial troubles as well as to address more serious concerns.

Couple's Love Remains a Howling Affair June 8, 1996 Dear Ann Landers: This is the story of how my mother and father met. They are too embarrassed to write, so I'm doing it for them. My parents were both studying in a library at Harvard University 21 years ago. It was late, and there was a full moon. Each thought the library was empty. My mother, at one end of the library, went to the window and started to howl at the moon. My father, who was at the other end of the library, also started to howl at the moon. When my mother heard someone else howling, she walked to where the sound was coming from and saw my father howling. Mom said she had seen him on the campus but he seemed sort of "nerdy." When she saw him howling, her opinion changed. She hoped he would ask her out, but he didn't, so she asked him. He was quite shy, but she was very fond of him and hung in there for five years. Finally, he proposed, and they got married. In August, they'll celebrate their 16th anniversary. They are still very much in love - and they still hold hands and howl at full moons.

Ann Landers Ignores Real Safety Message When NRA President Charlton Heston took the time to write a letter to syndicated columnist Ann Landers regarding the safe storage of firearms and NRA's programs to promote firearm safety, Landers begrudgingly printed it, commenting, "Never thought I'd see the day I would give space to someone touting the National Rifle Association." Ann has always exhibited an anti-gun mentality , publishing countless anti-gun letters. But the responses she receives from NRA and NRA members are never published. While it is nice to see she published Mr. Heston's letter, she quickly followed it up with a letter from a group called "Common Sense About Kids and Guns." The group, headed by the wife of anti-gun extremist U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) , claims to promote a safety message, but spends most of its time and energy promoting an anti-gun message, laced with misinformation and anti-gun myths

Some people find great happiness in misery. You know about those people? I've read about them, sure.
But you want to know who our heroes will be, things like that? Yes, start with that.
We used to have heroes from literature, or medicine, or this sort of thing. During the next decade it's going to be television stars. Television stars?
This is what people are looking at. Sports figures, rock stars, musicians. I've been hearing about America's return to simple values. What do you make of that?
Of course.
I'm talking about high rollers like Michael Milken, these big rip-off guys. Yet he went to jail. Did that teach us a lesson?
I don't know. They still admire him as the guy who made $550 million in one year. You don't make that much with your column? [laughs].
Well, not this year [doesn't laugh]. Conversation continues with Ann's observations on marriage, consumerism, etc. Any other thoughts?
Who else are you talking to? Let's see. Dr. Joyce Brothers.

A Brief History of the Legendary Columnist
Ann Landers' career as a syndicated advice columnist spanned nearly 50 years. The Chicago Tribune was her journalistic home for the past 15 years and her column appeared in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide, generating more than 2,000 letters each day. Her readers, who numbered close to 90 million and reached into the highest ranges of US society, respected her advice and revered her decades of wise and witty counsel on almost every kind of problem. Landers was widely considered one of the most influential women in America. She was truly a national institution.
Ann Landers was born Esther Pauline Friedman on July 4, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa, along with her identical twin sister, Pauline Ester Friedman, who would become Abigail Van Buren, also known as Dear Abby.
Landers' parents were Russian immigrants who owned movie theaters. According to Landers, she owed a lot to her parents and her Midwest upbringing. A Tribune reporter interviewing her several years ago quoted Landers' as saying, "I think that middle-American values have helped me tremendously the principles, the morality. It was a place where neighbors cared about neighbors. And I mean really cared."
As a Chicagoan, Esther Lederer would become the world's second Ann Landers. The first Landers was a nurse named Ruth Crowley. Crowley had written an advice column in the Chicago Sun-Times and when she died, the Sun-Times held a competition to choose a successor. Competition contestants, including Landers, were asked to respond to identical questions just as a columnist would.

A Forward by
Margo Howard
Dear Friends:
Thank you for visiting the Ann Landers Research Fund to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. I know my mother would have been proud of this collaboration, as she was a great supporter of medical research and a strong believer in focus and commitment, both of which are represented by the MMRF's targeted mission and dedicated efforts toward funding the myeloma research.
It is also comforting for me to know that her name will be connected with the medical progress of an organization as respected and successful as the MMRF. By making a donation to this fund, your support will have a direct impact on tens of thousands of individuals and their families affected by multiple myeloma. I know that the money raised through this collaboration will be applied directly to the most promising myeloma research in the world. It is my hope that the awareness raised through this fund will help educate the general public and encourage them to support our efforts.
In the column I wrote following my mother's death, I mentioned how she believed she got as much sustenance from her readers as they got from her. She was also convinced that if any one thing could serve as a solution to all manner of problems, it was kindness. Your generosity in supporting the Ann Landers Research Fund will help keep my mother's spirit and the legacy of her kindness alive. It would be beyond wonderful if the mystery of multiple myeloma could be solved as the name Ann Landers joins the legion of people who devoutly wish for a cure. Please consider joining us in our fight to help find a cure for multiple myeloma. On behalf of my mother, thank you for caring.

Women complain about sex more often than men.
Their gripes fall into two major categories:

Ann Landers died Saturday. She dispensed advice in her daily newspaper column to a whopping 90 million readers, the AP reports But I had to think back to a small blurb I wrote about her six years ago for "Internet Underground" magazine. Ann had been running disturbing letters about horrible experiences readers had on the internet. (Like this one from "Older But Wiser in Bakersfield.") The stage was set for a high-profile rebuke from Senator Patrick Leahy... "As a 55-year-old happily married man for 33 years, I am living proof that the vast majority of us Internet fans use our computers to browse newspapers, see the treasures of the Sistine Chapel, check the weather in Vermont or read the latest Batman...." Landers responded to Leahy, "As an advice columnist...you aren't so hot," and added that "The Internet is tailor-made for con men, the lonely and the bored." The next week she admitted to the L.A. Times that she didn't even own a computer. "I don't have to have a computer to know what's out there," she said.
To be charitable, Ann was at least half-right new internet users do need to be warned about the possibility of scam artists. But searching the internet six years later, I was pleased to discover Ann had later run a second column in which she published reader letters
