"Anyone who b e l i e v e s that the co m p et i t i v e spirit in America is dead has never been in a s u p e r m a r ke t when the cashier o p e n s another checkout line." ~ Ann Landers Beloved by millions throughout the world, advice columnist Ann Landers (1918-2002) was born Esther Pauline Friedman on this day in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants and her identical twin, Pauline Esther, called "Popo," wrote the rival "Dear Abby" column. "The naked truth is always better than the best dressed lie," said Landers, whose friends called her Eppie. She began her column in the Chicago Sun-Times in 1955, after winning a contest to replace the original Ann Landers, who had died. By 1993, she had become the world's most widely syndicated columnist, with nearly 90 million readers daily in 1,200 papers. "All the column means to me is an opportunity to do good in the world," she said. She wrote from her Chicago penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, working from midnight until 4 in the morning. She used a typewriter because she just didn't like computers and often wrote while in the bathtub. "Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize them," she said.

Promoting Intimacy and Other-Centered Sexuality Ann Landers in favor of legalizing Prostitution STAND ON PROSTITUTION HAS ITS PROS AND CONS
Dear Ann Landers:
It was courageous of you to run that letter from the Nevada prostitute. I wonder if your client newspapers caught flak for printing it.
I, too, am a "Nevada Sex Worker." I enjoy my job and am grateful that the state of Nevada, in its infinite wisdom, accepts the fact that there is a legitimate market for my skills. I work in a licensed brothel and entertain as many as 150 men in every three-week working period. (I then get one week off.)
It is an enormous help to have someone such as you acknowledge the need for legalization of the work we do. You really are a tremendous force for good in this world, Ann.
Marjorie in the West
Dear Marjorie: I appreciate your support and am pleased to tell you that many readers wrote to applaud my courage. The verdict was not unanimous, however. Keep reading for another point of view: Ann Landers (you are not "dear" to me): That letter you printed from the Nevada prostitute was disgusting. I tore the whole page out of the newspaper so my children would not see it. I wonder how many papers canceled your contract because of it. I hope you will respond in print since others who think like I do would be pleased to see it.

Universities Care About Bottom Line Not Betterment
Dear Ann Landers: "Midwest Parents" recently posed two questions that prompted me to write. They asked, "What is happening to our universities and colleges? Are they so afraid of losing students that they are lowering their standards?" The answer is a resounding YES. Our system of higher education is a mess, and the blame must be shared by administrators, teachers and students. I have been a college professor for 30 years and have witnessed the relentless deterioration of "the system." Administrators used to be educators and scholars. Today, they are, with few exceptions, bureaucrats and business executives with their eyes on the bottom line. Teachers no longer want to teach. Students paying megabucks for education are frequently taught by graduate students. This, of course, suits administrators fine since graduate students cost less than faculty. Students believe that paying tuition entitles them to a degree. Many colleges and universities treat them like customers in a department store when they ought to be treated like clients in a health club no effort, no result. No one shapes up simply by taking one exercise class, and no one learns by merely enrolling. Education has been turned into a business. The product is no longer an educated person but a "degreed" person. Too many college degrees are fraudulent documents, testifying to an education that never happened. The sooner the American people realize this, the sooner there may be some changes in a system that is riddled with corruption. Otherwise, we might as well issue a Ph.D, with each birth certificate. Letter from Memphis
Dear Ann Landers: The letter from "Depressed Old Prof in New Orleans" is absolutely correct. As a professor, I can attest to that. As colleges and universities admit underprepared students in order to collect their tuition, the pressure is on to give them passing grades. Three years ago, I was called into the dean's office to discuss my performance. Among other things, I was told (and I quote), "I don't care what you have to do. More students must succeed in your classes." The unstated but clear implication was to lower the standards in order to move those students along. The next year, and even greater percentage of students "did not succeed," so I flunked them. I simply could not and would not pass students who had not mastered the material, regardless of the consequences. If I hadn't had tenure, I would surely have been fired. I get no satisfaction out of having a high percentage of my students fail. In fact, it makes me sad when this happens. But that's the way it is today in Tennessee and, I'm sure, in a good many other places. - Old Prof in Memphis

Dear Ann Landers FORTY-ONE YEARS OF ADVICE, WISDOM, AND UNCOMMON GOOD SENSE By Kira Albin, interview conducted in 1997
Photograph courtesy of Ann Landers For 41 years, seven days a week, Eppie Lederer aka Ann Landers has dispensed advice as reliably as the sun rises and sets.
Ninety million readers worldwide take Lederer's counsel like a tonic. Two thousand readers a day send letters, hoping for answers from the revered sage herself.
Lederer-who turns 79 on July 4-is a keep-your-chin-up, common-sense gal who has managed to stay relevant and contemporary for four decades. Her secret, besides sagacity, wit and abundant energy, is an army of assistants that includes her staff, her family, and well-connected friends.
Lederer's daughter Marco Howard-smart and hip-reads Mom's column in the Boston Globe . "And if she doesn't like my answer to a particular question," says Lederer, "she'll call and say, 'I thought you were out to lunch today.'" Then there's the granddaughter in Minneapolis, the granddaughter in New York, and the grandson in California‹all extremely bright and perceptive, of course‹who read and call and keep Grandma on track. Most important is Lederer's list of friends, a Who's Who roll call, and it is these folks she has so brilliantly relied upon since Day One.

Ann Landers' famous "The Childless Couple" There is nothing sadder than a childless couple. It breaks my heart to see them relaxing around swimming pools in Florida, sitting all suntanned and miserable on the decks of their boats trotting off to Europe like lonesome fools. It's an empty life. Nothing but money to spend, more time to enjoy and a whole lot less to worry about. The poor childless couple are so wrapped up in themselves, you have to feel sorry for them. They don't fight over the child's discipline, don't blame each other for the child's most obnoxious characteristics, and they miss all the fun of doing without for the child's sake. They just go along, doing whatever they want, buying what they want and liking each other. It's a pretty pathetic picture. Everyone should have children. No one should be allowed to escape the wonderful experience that accompanies each stage in the development of the young the happy memories of sleepless nights, coughing spells, tantrums, diaper rash, debts, "dipso" baby sitters, saturated mattresses, emergencies and never-ending crises. How dismal is the peaceful home without the constant childish problems that make a well-rounded life and an early breakdown; the tender, thoughtful discussions when the report card reveals the progeny to be one step below a moron; the end-of-the-day reunions with all the joyful happenings recited like well-placed blows to the temples.

Ask Ann Landers: 4 April, 1997 Q I see nothing wrong with a good, hard spanking when a child is misbehaving. I am sick and tired of listening to whining brats in supermarkets and department stores while their parents plead with them to "behave yourself." When my kids acted like brats, I told them if you don't be quiet, I'll take you to the car and give you something to cry about!" They learned how to behave in public as well as at home. My father was a very loving man who worked hard to support my mother, my sister and me. If we didn't obey, he first let us know verbally. If that didn't work, he'd take off his belt and use it. Once we got a strapping, he never had to hit us for the same offense again.

Ann, real name Esther Lederer, died less than two weeks before her July 4th birthday. According to her daughter, Margo Howard, the cause of death was multiple myeloma, tumors of the bone marrow. In 1993, she was the world's most widely syndicated columnist, appearing in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide with 90 million readers daily. Her twin sister, Pauline, followed her into the profession as writer of the Dear Abby column. Madigan, CEO and chairman of Tribune Co. said, "Eppie Lederer was a great columnist and a wonderful person. She helped people with her advice, and made important contributions to society through the causes she supported."

SOUTH HAVEN DAILY TRIBUNE
South Haven Michigan Shrine Records Shocking Dear Ann Landers: That glowing letter about how much good the Shriners do was only half of the story. I believe you were taken in. The issue is not how much money the Shriners pass on to the hospitals they support but how much do the temples keep for themselves. The Orlando Sentinal did a terrific series on this subject recently. I am enclosing part one. It will tell you all you need to know. -R.L.,
TIPP CITY, OHIO
DEAR TIPP: Thank you for your letter and part one of the series by Orlando Sentinel. John Haile, editor of the Sentinel sent me part two. I was distressed by the information contained in that prize-winning story. Shrine refers to their hospitals as "The soul of the Shrine"" and the Sentinal cited Internal Revenue Service records showing that although the Shrine is the richest charity in the nation, it gave its 22 hospitals for children less than one-third of the gross collected from the public in 1984. The REMAINDER was spent on food, travel, entertainment, fraternal ceremonies and fund-raising.
