Landers, Ann In response to a letter from a concerned 24-year-old virgin, advice columnist Ann Landers reminds the public that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a flu shot can sometimes cause an Elisa test for HIV to yield positive results. The best course of action, says Landers, is to undergo a second testpreferably with the more specific Western Blot test, which should rule out false-positives.

Ann Landers
By Robin Judd In the past forty years, the Ann Landers advice column has helped lovelorn teens, confused parents, couples on the brink of divorce, grieving widows, and a myriad of others who are in need of counsel. Translated into over twenty languages, Esther Pauline Friedman Lederer, known professionally as Ann Landers, reaches millions of readers with her clear, witty and sometimes sarcastic columns. H er parents, Abraham and Rebecca Friedman, were Russian Jewish immigrants who arrived in the United States in 1908. They moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1910, where two daughters, Helen and Dorothy, were born. Like many Russian Jewish immigrants of that time, the family slowly earned enough money to leave the poorer section of the city, first by peddling chickens from a pushcart and then, by 1911, by amassing enough earnings to buy into a grocery store. When Esther Pauline was born on July 4, 1918, her parents owned a small house in Sioux City. When she was in her early teens, her father became part owner of a movie and vaudeville theater. Active in the Jewish community of Sioux City, Abraham Friedman's civic stature grew as he acquired other theaters and diversified his business interests. Nicknamed "Eppie," Esther Pauline was born only seventeen minutes apart from her twin, Pauline Esther (later known as columnist Abigail Van Buren). The two girls experienced many important events simultaneously, participated in similar activities, and shared the same interests. The twins attended Central High (during their four years there they were refused admission to an all-girls club because of their religion), graduated in 1936, and matriculated at a small college nearby. After her twin became engaged to Mort Phillips, Esther Pauline met her future husband, Jules Lederer. She and her sister had a double wedding in their Sioux City synagogue on July 2, 1938. The Lederers had one daughter, Margo, and were divorced in 1975. Ann Landers made her impending divorce public to her readership on what would have been her thirty-sixth wedding anniversary.

50. Urban Legends Reference Pages: History ('One Vote' Fallacies)
Dear ann landers I m no historian, but that essay in your column about one vote Even the lad who was setting ann landers straight got a bit of the
http://www.snopes.com/history/govern/onevote.htm
'One Vote' Fallacies Claim: To impress upon readers the importance of casting their votes, lists circulate that perpetuate a variety of "one vote" canards; e.g.;
  • In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England.
  • In 1649, one vote caused Charles I of England to be executed.
  • In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
  • In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
  • In 1875, one vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic.
  • In 1923, one vote gave Adolf Hitler leadership of the Nazi Party.
  • In 1941, one vote saved Selective Service - just weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked.
Status: All the above claims are false. Origins: Regardless of the value of casting a ballot, the fervor to incite others to vote doesn't abrogate the need to be factual in the claims used as prods. The falsities listed above routinely find their way into the media, most likely because they have so often been circulated as part of larger lists detailing incidents where one vote made an important difference that this year's inciter doesn't think to question them. Worse, not only are these lists published as gospel both in the traditional print media and on the Internet, they often survive attempts to debunk the various erroneous claims made in them. Election year after election year, screwball "one vote" lists have life breathed back into them through impassioned readers' letters on the editorial page, in the body of news articles by paid journalists, and in the offerings of advice and opinion columnists.

Examples:
[Collected via e-mail, 1998]
In March 1992 a man living in Newtown near Boston Massachusetts received a bill for his as yet unused credit card stating that he owed $0.00.
He ignored it and threw it away.
In April he received another and threw that one away too.
The following month the credit card company sent him a very nasty note stating they were going to cancel his card if he didn't send them $0.00 by return of post. He called them, talked to them, they said it was a computer error and told him they'd take care of it.
The following month our hero decided that it was about time that he tried out the troublesome credit card figuring that if there were purchases on his account it would put an end to his ridiculous predicament. However, in the first store that he produced his credit card in payment for his purchases he found that his card had been cancelled. He called the credit card company who apologized for the computer error once again and said that they would take care of it. The next day he got a bill for $0.00 stating that payment was now overdue.
Assuming that having spoken to the credit card company only the previous day the latest bill was yet another mistake he ignored it, trusting that the company would be as good as their word and sort the problem out.

ANN LANDERS Columnist Name at birth: Esther Pauline Friedman For nearly 50 years, Ann Landers dispensed advice to readers in a daily column that ran in more than 1,200 U.S. newspapers. A wife and mother with no journalism experience, Esther "Eppie" Lederer first took the job in 1955 at the Chicago Sun-Times , replacing the previous writer on an advice column, "Ask Ann Landers." Eppie's no-nonsense, practical advice was a hit. Between the 1960s and the 1990s she increased her readership in the newspapers and churned out half a dozen best-selling books, giving people advice on everything from wedding etiquette and in-law troubles to cancer and cross-dressing. She was also the famous twin of rival advice columnist "Dear Abby" (Abigail Van Buren, the pen name of Pauline Esther Phillips), the wife of Budget Rent-a-Car founder Jules Lederer, and the mother of "Dear Prudence" (Margo Howard), the advice columnist for the online magazine Slate Ann Landers

Advice columnist Ann Landers dies at 83
Story Tools CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) Advice columnist Ann Landers whose real name was Esther Pauline Lederer was recalled Sunday as a well-read woman with "her thumb on everything" who refused treatment for the cancer that killed her. Lederer, whose friends called her Eppie, died at home Saturday of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, said the Chicago Tribune, the flagship newspaper for her column. She died less than two weeks before her July 4 birthday, when she would have been 84. Lederer's twin sister, Pauline Esther Phillips, followed Lederer's footsteps into the advice business, writing under the name Abigail Van Buren. Phillips and her daughter Jeanne Phillips still write the column known as Dear Abby. Chicago Sun-Times columnist and friend Michael Sneed said Lederer chose not to have treatment for her illness and didn't publicize it beyond her family and close friends. Lederer began her column at the Sun-Times. CNN NewsPass VIDEO Esther 'Eppie' Lederer, known to newspaper readers as advice columnist Ann Landers, has died at age 83. CNN's Miles O'Brien reports. ANN LANDERS She was born Esther Pauline Friedman on July 4,1918, in Sioux City, Iowa. As was her twin sister,"Dear Abbey" columnist Pauline Phillips.
Today "Eppie" Lederer, her married name and that by which she is known by her army of friends, receives over 2,000 letters a day from folks seeking advice. But it didn't start so grandly.
Lederer and her family had just moved to Chicago, where the local newspaper carried a thrice-weekly column called "Ask Ann Landers." It was written by a nurse who for the most part talked about health issues. Simply put, Eppie thought she could do better.
So she called her friend Will Munnecke, a Chicago Sun-Times executive, and told him she wanted to help Ms. Landers answer her mail. And guess what? She was told that Landers had died the week before and the paper was seeking a new advice columnist. Lederer was given 15 letters to answer to test her skills. Although their were 29 contenders for the job, and all of them professional writers, this is where you begin to see the drive and attention to detail that has been a cornerstone of her career. And good connections don't hurt.
For the answer to a legal issue about who owned the walnuts that fell from one neighbor's tree into the other neighbor's yard, she called her friend, Justice William O. Douglas of the United States Supreme Court. Another friend, Father Theodore Hesburgh, president of the University of Notre Dame, served as the authority for a question on interfaith marriage. And so on.
