Ann Landers Honesty of Danish people not surprising DEAR ANN LANDERS: I enjoyed your column about the experiment that tested the honesty of people in various European countries. I was not surprised that the Danes came out so well. I lived in Denmark during the Nazi occupation. My parents were friends of the Danish king's chief of staff. I would like to correct a statement you made that was a common rumor during World War II. King Christian X never wore the Star of David armband. The welfare of Jews, however, was of great importance to both the king and the Danish people. I believe that if the Nazis had ordered all the Jews in Denmark to wear armbands, the entire nation would have worn them proudly. Denmark was the only European country that managed to save the majority of its Jewish population. There were approximately 10,000 Jews in Denmark at the time, and of those, only 120 were killed. It helped that Denmark is located near neutral Sweden and many refugees made it to safety there. Also, the approximately 450 Danish Jews who were transported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp received many Red Cross food packages from the Danish government, which tried to monitor (as closely as possible) the conditions under which the Jews were kept. Don't misunderstand me, it was hell in those camps, but no other country made that kind of effort for its citizens. I was 15 when the war ended. In spite of the hardships, I remember that time with pride because the entire country of Denmark was totally united against its common enemy. I was never worried about any Dane turning me in to the Nazis. There was a feeling of trust and togetherness I have not experienced since.

RELATED Columnist Ann Landers dies at 83 SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) Fans of celebrated advice columnist Ann Landers paid nearly $250,000 to snag her desk, combat boots, antique furniture and letters at an auction of some of the late syndicated writer's belongings. Margo Howard, daughter of Landers, said with no room to store all the treasures her mother collected over the years in her 16-room Chicago, Illinois, apartment, Sunday's auction was both a practical solution and a way to share history. "Because of who she was I thought that people who wanted to have that kind of connection to her should have the chance," Howard said. The auction, held by San Francisco auction house Butterfields, brought nearly $250,000, with many lots sold to Internet and phone bidders from across the country, according to the auction house. Landers, whose real name was Esther "Eppie" Lederer, died of multiple myeloma on June 22 at age 83. For four decades she delivered snappy, timely advice on seemingly every topic from broken hearts to depression, financial woes to sexuality a connection with readers that spanned generations and continents.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Landers, Ann (1918-2002), pseudonym of Esther Pauline “Eppie” Friedman Lederer, newspaper advice columnist. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Lederer attended Morningside College. In 1955, while a 37-year-old housewife, she took over the “Ann Landers” advice column in the Chicago Sun-Times. (She moved to the Chicago Tribune in 1987.) Landers quickly became known for her common sense and humorous replies to queries from readers. Conferring with a wide range of experts, including attorneys, physicians, psychologists, and members of the clergy, she offered information and opinions on readers' questions about such topics as marriage, family, children, social issues, sex, work, and religion. Her daily column eventually appeared in about 1,000 newspapers in the United States and other countries. Her twin sister, Pauline Phillips, used the pseudonym Abigail Van Buren to write the advice column called “Dear Abby.”

Advice columnist Ann Landers dies at 83
Story Tools CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) Advice columnist Ann Landers whose real name was Esther Pauline Lederer was recalled Sunday as a well-read woman with "her thumb on everything" who refused treatment for the cancer that killed her. Lederer, whose friends called her Eppie, died at home Saturday of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, said the Chicago Tribune, the flagship newspaper for her column. She died less than two weeks before her July 4 birthday, when she would have been 84. Lederer's twin sister, Pauline Esther Phillips, followed Lederer's footsteps into the advice business, writing under the name Abigail Van Buren. Phillips and her daughter Jeanne Phillips still write the column known as Dear Abby. Chicago Sun-Times columnist and friend Michael Sneed said Lederer chose not to have treatment for her illness and didn't publicize it beyond her family and close friends. Lederer began her column at the Sun-Times. CNN NewsPass VIDEO Esther 'Eppie' Lederer, known to newspaper readers as advice columnist Ann Landers, has died at age 83. CNN's Miles O'Brien reports.
