NatWest said it had launched an inquiry after Chris Lancaster, 18, of Tiptree, Essex, received a cash card with the wording: "Mr C Lancaster Dick Head". A NatWest spokesperson said on Wednesday: "We have apologised unreservedly to Mr Lancaster." The spokesperson added: "This is completely unacceptable and we have launched an investigation." The Solo card was a replacement for one Mr Lancaster had lost. He said he saw the insulting words as he was about to hand over his new card to pay for goods in a supermarket and was so embarrassed he put the card back in his wallet. As well as apologising, he said NatWest had promised to pay him compensation.

I am not aware of anything relating to that particular port and was unable

provide some more specific information, such as if this is based on an

While researching my lineage, I have found that all the spellings of my surname origin began in Lancaster, SC. My grandfather was Willie Phillip William Couser. His wife was Martha Mackey. Also, My mother was Jessie Harris and her mother birth name was Dora Massey. According to recorded records their origin is Lancaster County, SC. I have found some African American with all spellings in the census records. I think I have trace the Massey side of my family to the slave owner. However, at time time my priotity is to fine the parents and siblings of my grandfather. My father, Willie Cousar, stated that Grandfather was Cherokee. But, the 1920 Census stated that he was Mullato. He died when I was about 6 years old. My father died before I started my research. When both my brothers died, I begin my research. I was raised with my fathers mother family. Please send the birth and death dates of your grandmother and great grandparents and any other information that you may have.

Designed by Mike Major, the statue is life size.
The three flags in the logo to the left can be identified as being the Lancaster flag (background) designed for the bicentennial, in the foreground the one on the left is the American flag and the one on the right, Sherman's Civil War troop flag."
The flag, then, appears to date from 2000. Looking at http://www.visitfairfieldcountyoh.org/misc.html , I would surmise that the two images on the flag are of Mt. Pleasant and City Hall, Lancaster. Chris Kretowicz , 14 September 2002

Sportsmanship's Not Dead, It's Just Bleeding in a Gutter
It was a damp and drizzly morning in West Yorkshire last Sunday when the second day of the West Tanfield Canoe Slalom, 2004 began. Two Lancaster students, Chris Bloomer and Matt Fear were taking part, hoping to qualify for entry to the BUSA events later this year and gain promotion to Division 3 of the National Slalom league. Slalom is a relatively straightforward sport, the aim being to paddle down the river, passing through the gates as you go, in the fastest possible time. The penalty for hitting a gate is 2 extra seconds; for missing a gate completely, 50 extra seconds added to your time. The Lancaster contingent fared well, and come Sunday evening were placed 1st and 2nd in the Division 4 competition, however looking at the results revealed a judging error – Matt had been recorded as missing only one gate, when in fact he had missed two. Poor judging had left us in an unfortunate situation: by rights we were entitled to that 2nd place, however good sportsmanship dictated that we inform the officials of the mistake. In trying to rectify the mistake we were met with much confusion. It is not uncommon for participants to challenge the judges decisions when they feel that unjust penalty points have been awarded, however the idea that we wished to add points was something new.

    Lancaster's New Chancellor
SIR Christian (Chris) Bonington CBE, is to be Lancaster University’s new Chancellor; he has certainly had a fascinating life and to even attempt to write a biography of him in one column or even taking up the entire edition of SCAN would be an insult to his incredible achievements. However a short summary is certainly in order for this is the gentleman who will be awarding Lancaster students with their degrees as of next year, following his unopposed nomination at University Court. Chris Bonington was born in 1934 in Hampstead and spent some of his education at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. He joined the Royal Tank Regiment in 1956. After three years stationed in North Germany he went on to be a mountaineering instructor at the Army Outward Bound School and began climbing the Alps. In 1958 he made the first British ascent of the Pillar of the Drus and in 1961 climbed the Central Pillar of the Freny on the South side of Mont Blanc. He spent nine months with Unilever, who’s current vice-chairperson is actually an alumnus of Lancaster University. But realising that a normal career would prevent him from pursuing the mountaineering he loves so much Chris gave up the Unilever job. Taking a leaf from his wife Wendy’s book, Chris Bonington went freelance (Wendy illustrates children’s books) and began doing photography and writing about mountaineering.

News Fire displaces large family
By Johnathan C. Ryan - Staff Writer Lancaster Fire Chief Chris Nunnery sprays water on flames shooting from an upstairs bedroom of a Miller Street house Wednesday morning. He started attacking the fire, even before putting on his turnout gear. "Sometimes you just got to do what you got to do," he said. Photo by Gregory A. Summers/Staff Writer Fire struck a Miller Street residence shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and left a large family with the challenge of starting over.
Most of the house and its contents were left beyond repair.
About 10 people were inside the two-story home at 413 Miller St. when resident Annette Herbert saw her daughter's bed go up in flames.
Herbert said she tried to retrieve some clothes from the upstairs bedroom, but gave up because the fire became too intense. She then quickly moved to alert the others.
"I thought everybody was going to burn up, so I tried to get the others out fast," Herbert said.
Within 10 minutes, Herbert said everyone was out and gathered in the front yard of a neighboring home, watching the flames and smoke from a safe distance. No one was hurt.
