BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS
In 1998 Chris Fellows completed his PhD studies in free radical polymerisation kinetics at James Cook University under the supervision of A/Prof Ernie Senogles. His PhD work involved the use of C-labelled small molecules as models for growing polymer radicals, a technique pioneered by John Bevington at Lancaster. Chris Fellows moved to the University of Sydney after graduation to begin work on a project funded by the Sugar Research and Development Corporation on the development of novel flocculants and anti-scalants for use in sugar milling. He then joined the Key Centre for Polymer Colloids at the University of Sydney as Scientific Projects and Education Officer, working with Professor Bob Gilbert in emulsion polymerisation and other areas. During five years in the Key Centre he was involved in projects in a wide range of fields, ranging from fundamental studies in free radical polymerisation kinetics, to highly applied investigations of latex systems for water-based paints, to work on the structure and dynamic behaviour of rice starch in aqueous solution. In 2000 Chris Fellows was appointed as Lecturer in Hydrocolloids in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney, a half-time position funded by the Molecular Biotechnology Program. During this fixed-term position his involvement in teaching molecular biotechnology led to an interest in applying the techniques and products of free-radical polymerisation to biological systems. On the completion of this Lectureship at the end of 2003, he worked with Prof Greg Warr at the University of Sydney, observing the reaction of polymerisable surfactants by atomic force microscopy.

Chris Jones
Lancaster University, UK Who are you? The experience of working through an avatar
This paper will explore the experience of a researcher being part of a team exploring one of the currently available avatar worlds used for educational purposes. The paper will report research undertaken as part of the EU funded project EQUEL from the point of view of a single researcher. The project was organised into several Significant interest groups and the AGORRA Sig was set up to explore knowledge sharing in 3D systems that were avatar based, in particular Active Worlds Educational Universe (AWEDU). AWEDU is a shared online 3D desktop system in which the individual participant is represented as an avatar that can have either a naturalistic or a non-naturalistic character. AWEDU is a relatively common, stable and explored 3D system (Schroeder, 2002; Becker, 2002; Hudson-Smith, 2002). Further details of the research can be found in Siggaard Jensen (2004), and Fejfer Olsen et al (2004). The position of the researcher was not part of the central team guiding the particular project and as a participant the researcher had to make sense of the research setting as it developed under another research group's control. The paper takes as its starting point a line from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland when Alice meets the caterpillar.

Domestic Road Talking the Talk: A chat with Chris Horner in Philadelphia By Neal Rogers
VeloNews associate editor This report filed June 3, 2005 Coming off a broken hip in March at Tirreno Adriatico, American Chris Horner (Saunier Duval), the top rider in USA Cycling's National Racing Calendar rankings the past three years, returned to racing on Tuesday in Lancaster, where he finished sixth. He again took sixth in Trenton Thursday, showing his Spanish team directors that he's on the mend and eager to make his first trip to the Tour de France. A win, or a strong showing, in Philadelphia on Sunday could go a long way to make that happen. We caught up with Horner to pose the questions everyone's been asking about the Tour and the USPRO Championships. VeloNews: How are things looking for a spot on the Saunier Duval-Prodir Tour de France team? Chris Horner: I hope it's looking good, but I'm going to have to ride better than I did at Lancaster to make the Tour team. But I've got time. I've got Philly on Sunday and the Tour de Suisse right after that. It's too soon to say, but I hope there's a shot. VN: Finishing top 10 at both Lancaster and Trenton shows the form is already back.
