IEEE History Center 2002 Women's History Month Hedy Lamarr Hedy Lamarr was a remarkable combination of movie star and inventor. She was born in Vienna in 1914 as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. She achieved fame in 1933 as the star of the scandalous Czech film Extase , which featured the first nude scene in cinematic history. The same year Lamarr married Fritz Mandl, one of the five leading European armament manufacturers. Mandl specialized in shells and grenades, but from the mid-thirties on he also manufactured military aircraft. He was interested in control systems and conducted research in the field. Mandl kept his young wife by his side as he attended hundreds of dinners and meetings with arms developers, builders, and buyers, where Lamarr clearly learned some things. The marriage broke up in 1937, when Lamarr escaped to London. She soon was signed by MGM and moved to Hollywood, where she starred in hugely successful films, such as the 1949

No. 435:
HEDY LAMARR, INVENTOR
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 435. Today, we peel away a mask of beauty and find what's under it. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I began my movie-going in the heyday of the old star system. Movie stars had set up housekeeping in the American mind. The men were all strong, handsome, and soft-spoken with pomade on their hair. The women were stunningly beautiful. These were man-made people icons without counterparts in reality. But somewhere there was a physical reality one that was not for us to know. Take the case of Hedy Lamarr: No star was more beautiful than she. She outran even the beauty factory of 1940 Hollywood. Hedy Lamarr came to America from Austria. She'd run away from a bad marriage to an arms maker who had helped to arm armed Mussolini for his invasion of Ethiopia. Her flight to America had also been a flight from the horrors of fascism as well as her marriage. In 1940 Lamarr met composer George Antheil at a dinner party. They fell to talking. The next evening, she invited him to dinner at her place. A peculiar chemistry had risen between two remarkable minds. They talked far into that night.

Actress Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, Austria and died in Altamonte Springs, Florida. While married to her first husband, Fritz Mandl, an arms manufacturer, she socialized with Adolf Hitler and Mussolini. She also became educated technically in his trade. Mandl was obsessed with his wife and never let her out of his sight. She hated him and his Nazi friends and finally escaped to London by drugging him. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? She met Louis B. Mayer of MGM in London. He hired her and changed her name to Hedy Lamarr, the surname in homage to a famously beautiful film star of the silent era, Barbara LaMarr. She had already appeared in several European films, including Ecstasy , in which she played a love-hungry young wife of an indifferent old husband. Closeups of her face in passion, and long shots of her running naked through the woods, gave the film notoriety. In Hollywood, she appeared in many films, usually cast as glamorous and seductive, including White Cargo and Tortilla Flat (both 1942), based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Her biggest success came in Cecil B. DeMille's

    GREAT INVENTORS
1940's Film Goddess Hedy Lamarr Responsible For Pioneering Spread Spectrum
Have you ever heard of "Spread Spectrum"? Well, it shouldn't surprise you that most people haven't. Afterall, it's the technical basis that makes wireless communications work in cellular phones, faxes, and other wireless communications systems. It's currently utilized in "wireless" LANS, integrated bar code scanner, palmtop computer, radio modem devices for warehousing, digital dispatch, digital cellular telephone communications, city/state or country networks for passing faxes, computer data, e-mail or multimedia data. And it's use is on the verge of potentially explosive commercial development, especially in relation to the internet. However, what's IS surprising is that the inventor behind this amazing process is an incredibly beautiful and talented actress of the 1940's! Her name is Hedy Lamarr, known as "The Most Beautiful Girl in The World", who first became famous for her scandalous skinny dipping scene in the 1933 Austrian art film "Ecstacy" (which at the time was banned by the U.S. Customs Department). Often quoted as saying "Any girl can be glamorous. All she has to do is stand still and look stupid.", Lamarr starred with Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland, appearing in approximately 25 films during her film career. Ironically, her real life, one of unusual twists and turns, is truly the stuff that movies are made of. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, she grew up in Vienna, Austria and married millionaire Friz Mandl, a Nazi sympathizer who dealt arms to Hitler. During her four year marriage to Mandl, she listened and learned about advanced weaponry when he took her to all his business meetings as his showpiece wife.

    HEDY LAMARR
    The world's gutsiest actress!
On November 9, 1913, Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born in Vienna, Austria to a banker and his wife.(In her autobiography she stated it was 1915, but most sources indicate she may have fudged a bit). Hedwig, who obviously became Hedy, had a rather calm childhood, but it was cinema that fascinated her. By the time she was a teenager, she decided to drop out of school and seek her fame as an actress. Her first role was a bit part in the German film GELD AUF DER STRASE(aka MONEY ON THE STREET) in 1930. She was attractive and talented enough to be in three more German productions in 1931, but it would be her fifth film that would catapult her to worldwide fame. In 1932, Hedy appeared in a German film called EXTASY and had made the gutsy move to be nude. It's the story of a young girl who is married to a gentleman much younger than she, but she winds up falling in love with a young soldier. The movie's nude scenes created a sensation all over the world. To be fair, it is very tame by today's standards, but the film was banned by the US government at the time. I have a small clip of EXTASY lasting a couple of minutes which I came across about eleven years ago and there really isn't much to it. It consists of her young lover looking for her while she is running away so he won't see her nude. To be honest Hedy is absolute beautiful in the scene in addition to the skinny dipping scene. Hedy soon married Fritz Mandl, who was a munitions manufactuer and a Nazi sympathizer. He made a vain attempt to buy up all the prints of EXTASY he could lay his hands on. Even Italy's dictator, Benito Mussolini, had a copy and refused to sell it to Mandl. It turned out to be a complete waste of money because there are still several prints floating around the world today.

    Thank Hedy Lamarr For Bluetooth
The next time you are using your wireless cell phone headset or synchronizing your PDA, be aware that one of the key technologies in Bluetooth enabled wireless devices was co-invented by a beautiful and famous 1930's film actress.
The story begins on the eve of World War II. Hedy Lamarr, the former Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, was married to Fritz Mandl, a preeminent Austrian arms manufacturer. She divorced Mandl in 1937 and moved to Hollywood where Louis B. Mayer of MGM gave her the name Lamarr. What she learn while married to Mandl apparently stayed on her mind, though. In 1940 she struck up a conversation with her neighbor, a noted music composer. Hedy had an idea for radio controlling torpedoes by constantly moving the control frequency so the radio signal wouldn't be detectable or easily interfered with. What she needed was some practical way to make it work.
This is where George Antheil, her neighbor and composer, thought it might be done like a player piano. Why not? A player piano roll causes a constant set of frequency shifts by changing notes to play a song. If you synchronize two identical piano rolls, one at the transmitter and one at the receiver, you can change transmission channels at will. The transmitter roll switches a different capacitor in the oscillator circuit to change frequency and the receiver roll does likewise to retune the receiver. Anyone else trying to tune in this signal will only catch it for a moment before it changes. The eavesdropper doesn't know what frequency is next on the roll, so he doesn't know where to tune next.

Calling Hedy Lamarr Australian Premiere In Calling Hedy Lamarr , director Georg Misch is interested in how truth and myth intertwine. He dissects the history of this woman with the exotic eroticism who also invented what has become a cornerstone for wireless communications. The way the film handles the archive material from various sources reflects the inner conflicts of a Hollywood diva whose other talent as a mathematical genius was not allowed to unfold so as not to endanger her aura as a successful goddess of the silver screen. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, Austria on November 9, 1913, she appeared in her first film in 1930, but it was her appearance in the 1933 Czech film "Ecstasy" which shot her to stardom. She appeared in a nude swimming scene which created a sensation in Europe and promptly got the film banned in the United States.

Her husband, Fritz Mandl, a Viennese munitions maker, who had made millions manufacturing weapons for the Nazis, was upset by the film and tried to buy every copy of the print in existence. He was not successful and soon came to regret these efforts, when the Nazis confiscated his factory, claiming that he owed them taxes. His wife, Hedy, fled to England. There, she was seen by Louis B. Mayer, who immediately hired her and gave her the screen name Lamarr, hoping to keep secret the fact that she was the same actress who had appeared scandalously undressed in "Ecstasy." This did not work either, as reporters quickly realized who she really was. Louis B. Mayer called her "the most beautiful girl in the world" and brought her to America in 1937.
