42. Nancy Kwan: A Who2 Profile
Brief biography about the AsianAmerican actress
http://www.who2.com/nancykwan.html
NANCY KWAN Actor Name at birth: Kwan Ka Shen Nancy Kwan was a ballet dancer in London before she made her acting debut in the hit movie The World of Suzie Wong (1960, with William Holden ). Her second movie, Flower Drum Song (1961), was also a critical and popular success, and Kwan became internationally famous, Hollywood's first Eurasian female star. Kwan grew up in Hong Kong, the daughter of a British model and a Chinese architect. She studied dance in England as a teenager and spent four years with the Royal Ballet in London. After her first two movies, her career tapered off a bit, but Kwan continued to work steadily in features, often in light comedies such as Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN (1966, with Dick Van Dyke Arrivederci, Baby (1968, starring Tony Curtis ) and The Wrecking Crew (1970, starring Dean Martin ). She also ran her own production company in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Kwan has since acted on stage, made guest appearances on TV, and appeared in cosmetics infomercials.

Hong Kong Biography:
Nancy Kwan was born on May 19, 1939 in Hong Kong. The daughter of a successful Chinese architect and a Scottish/English fashion model, she spent her early years in Hong Kong, but travelled to England at age thirteen to finish her schooling. Rather than pursuing acting, she became dancer in the Royal Ballet in London.
While on holiday in Hong Kong Nancy was discovered by an American producer, who signed her to a contract and sent her to Hollywood for acting lessons. She won the title role in the classic romantic drama The World of Suzie Wong, opposite popular leading man William Holden. The successful (and somewhat controversial) film made her an international star.
She followed up the next year with a starring role in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Flower Drum Song. The film was unusual not only because it was the first American movie with an all-Asian cast, but also because it portrayed Chinese-Americans in a positive light.
Nancy went on to star in many more films from the sixties onward. Given her Eurasian features, and the limited number of roles for Asian actors, she often played non-Asian or non-traditional characters.

The New World of Nancy Kwan
By Ruthe Stein
It was one of those memorable roles an actor is linked to forever, especially if, as happened to Nancy Kwan, it comes early in a career.
So anyone old enough to go to the movies in 1960 will surely think, "Really Suzie Wong, here in San Francisco?" upon hearing that Kwan has just opened in the play "Arthur and Leila".
Kwan is 54 but hardly looks older than she did as the sensuous prostitute in "The World of Suzie Wong". Relaxing at her hotel the morning after the opening of "Arthur and Leila," she has on black thights and a stylish long silk blouse flowing beyond a brocade vest. Her shining black hair was in a modified bob. When Vidal Sassoon created the bob for her more than 30 years ago, it revolutionized hair-dos, liberating women from rollers and teasing.
She laughed when reminded that in those days any story about her was sure to include her measurements. "Write that I'm skinnier now. I always lose weight when I do a play."
Two Character Play
"Arthur and Leila" a two character show about a Chinese American brother and sister wrestling with their ethnic identities appealed to her because of the theme and because of the theme and because "it is a stretch and that's good for me as an actress." It runs at the Bay Front Theater in Fort Mason through November 21, then travels to Los Angeles. The producers, Brava! for Women in the Arts, are talking about taking it to New York.

Nancy Kwan thrives after surviving early fame as the actress who played the most notorious character in the Asian American cosmology.

PAGE 1 OF 6 There is an appealing street urchin scrappiness in her eyes and in the calories - be - damned set of her mouth as she orders the pie. he Old World Restaurant in Westwood would be a good place to talk, Nancy Kwan had suggested in her clipped Hong Kong British accent. Despite the humanizing effect of our brief phone conversation, as I wait there I am filled with suspense that owes more to the emotional charge associated with her most famous acting role than with the anticipation of meeting Nancy Kwan herself.
Suzie Wong. The name offends a generation of Asian Americans who grew up in its shadow. It doesn't matter that most have never actually seen The World of Suzie Wong , the 1960 Ray Stark production starring Nancy Kwan and William Holden, or the stage production on which the film is based. Or that almost no one alive seems to have read the original Richard Mason novel. What matters is that after the film's release the most superficial (and offensive) aspects of the Suzie Wong character single-handedly usurped the image of Asian womanhood in the western imagination. Its spectacular success may be Suzie Wong 's greatest sin, the reason that the name still carries a strongly negative emotional charge. Without understanding that it would be difficult to understand the woman who, in Stark's words, "

Special to AsianWeek so Flower Drum Song cheongsam Flower Drum Song could have used a little editing. But the movie also seems to sprawl inadvertently because of its very subject matter. The range of APA experience seems to surge out beyond the limits of the one-hour-long movie format. The World of Suzy Wong Flower Drum Song was her second film. Since Flower Drum Song, Kwan, who says she was born around 1939, has assumed a host of roles, in films such as Drop Dead Darling and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story

Anna May Wong: Frosted Yellow Willows
"Her Life, Times and Legend"
A documentary film produced by Elaine Mae Woo

Narrated by Nancy Kwan, this documentary film, "Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows: Her Life, Times and Legend" introduces the first Asian American international film star (1905-1961) whose marked beauty and achievements have yet to be rivaled. Her career spanned over four decades. She appeared in over 60 films, starred in domestic as well as international stage productions, and made appearances on top drama shows in early television. Anna was also the first Asian American to have her own television show.
Both Hollywood and Europe proclaimed the exoticism of this Chinese American actress. Anna became known for her fluid grace and languid sexuality on screen. And through the use of photographs, interviews, and film footage from around the world, we will present the actress who charmed audiences worldwide with her piquant style.
In this biographical documentary, we will follow the ascent of Anna May Wong from her humble beginning in Los Angeles, California to her uphill climb in Hollywood and to the peak of her international fame. We will also examine how she struggled against the confining traditions of her own heritage, defied the limitations set on her and other Chinese by the laws of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and how she subsequently utilized her fame to aid people from whom she was three generations removed.
In Development
This film project is recognized by the International Documentary Association.
