TAKE A TRIP DOWN THE NILE
By Ellen S. Comerford Disney's "Aida" is currently on stage at Shea's Performing Arts Center. The award-winning musical, inspired by the Verdi opera, was written by Elton John and Tim Rice and is their first collaboration since the enormously successful "The Lion King." "Aida" is a story involving star-crossed lovers that begins in modern time in the Egyptian room of a museum. Amneris, once an ancient Egyptian queen, invites the audience to witness a tale of love and power at a time when war raged between Egypt and its southern neighbor, Nubia. As the tale begins Radames, an Egyptian army captain, is on his way home when he encounters a group of captured Nubian women and is immediately taken by the courageous, feisty Nubian princess Aida, who takes up a sword to defend her people. Radames takes her home to Egypt as a gift for his fiancee, the Egyptian princess Amneris. Thus the love triangle begins, along with some plotting by Chief Minister Zoser, who reveals to the audience his plot to poison the reigning Pharaoh so that Radames can rule Egypt. In the meantime, Radames and Aida fall in love. At her urging, he gives all his possessions to the Nubian slaves, but then Aida's father is captured and more problems occur. Radames (at Aida's insistence) marries Amneris in an attempt to bring peace to the two countries. The leads are all excellent Kelli Fournier as Amneris, Jeremy Kushnier as Radames, and Paulette Ivory as Aida. Ivory shines in the title role. Even as an Egyptian slave her posture says queen.

Rating: N If the disney empire's return to glory was marked by the films Beauty And The Beast and the film/stage versions of The Lion King, then its fall is surely heralded by the heap of confusing rubble that is Aida Elton John and Tim Rice 's update of the grandest of all Italian operas is an uncomfortable mix of Afro-Egyptian history and daytime soap. Sure, so is Verdi's masterpiece, which beneath the pageantry is really a great love triangle tale with quasi-political undertones. But at least Verdi wasn't trying to be politically correct. And at least his music and characters were consistent.

Funny Girl ... email me for info. Tom Williams Directed by Robert Falls At the Cadillac Palace Theatre AIDA is back home where it originated at the Cadillac Palace Theatre with most of the ‘problems’ worked out. I think it’s a glorious return! I loved this show and can’t recommend it enough. It is pure spectacle, vivid color, daring set designs with visual surprises. It has terrific musical variety with moving, energetic performances all making a visit to the Cadillac Palace a fun night of theatre. AIDA is an ambitious show that attempts to do too much. Good for the producers. I’d rather see a show that tries to reach greatness and ‘almost make it’ than a mediocre show that plays it safe. AIDA has the guts to reach for greatness. I think it succeeded. Most critics would disagree with me, but I’m with the audiences on this one. They loved this show and so will you.

Tip of the Week

This brilliantly eccentric outdoor performancea mishmash of comic neurotics cavorting and biking around the grounds of Humboldt Parkis the first in Redmoon's yearlong series focusing on Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull."
Tip of the Week
"20" was born from a simple premise: ask the same twenty questions to a varied group of gay men living in Chicago during the summer of 2002, and use their responses to build a script. TIP OF THE WEEK Tackling everything from apathetic Dominick's employees to psychotic Xerox machine fanatics to good ole President Bush himself, Second City e.t.c.'s 24th revue, "Curious George Goes to War" is by far one of the funniest and most polished shows to be produced over at Piper's Alley in recent years. TIP OF THE WEEK The House Theatre achieves some beautiful, almost kabuki-like images in their latest work, "The Terrible Tragedy of Peter Pan." The visuals are of the magic-mushroom variety (a pirate's intestines spill out of his guts in a spool of metallic gold ribbon), an interesting complement to Phillip C. Klapperich's humorous, post-ironic adaptation of this story. TIP OF THE WEEK TIP OF THE WEEK TIP OF THE WEEK NONFICTON REVIEW ... TIP OF THE WEEK Newcity Communications, Inc.

David Mamet and Neil LaBute sit down to a meal of cold existentialism in Robert William Sherwood’s grim memory play Absolution . Part meditation, part thriller, the Canadian writer’s elliptical, viscerally discomforting stage noir posits a high-school reunion Sissy Spacek’s Carrie wouldn’t wish on her persecutors. Fifteen years before the play begins, a trio of blind-drunk male Vancouver teens committed an atrocity they didn’t wholly remember; now it comes back like a bad penny. But the play isn’t as much about the unearthed crime as it is about its reverberations, if not consequences, in the lives of the perpetrators, one of whom has become disconnected not just from his so-called life but from any belief in the language he once revered. On one level

SPRING 1999 VOL.4, NO.2 Broadway Love Songs Dedicated to Bran Pace On February 14th, the biggest and brightest stars of Broadway musical theatre gathered to help one of their own with a benefit concert, Broadway Love Songs: Valentine's Day with the Stars. The evening, produced by Neil Berg, was dedicated to a very special friend and colleague, James Branford Pace. While on tour with JOLSON: THE MUSICAL, this gifted dancer was shot during a brutal mugging. Paralyzed from the chest down by the bullet wound, Bran has undergone intense physical therapy in the months since his ordeal. He has regained movement in his arms, and continues to thrive under supportive care and training. Proceeds from the Valentine's Day concert were contributed to The Actors' Fund to assist with Bran's care and recovery. Douglas Sills captivated the audience with his voice. The lovely event, held at Manhattan's China Club in association with In Theater, featured amazing performances by Robert Evan, Jeremy Kushnier, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Alice Ripley, Craig Shulman, Douglas Sills, Emily Skinner, Danny Zolli, The Jolson Company and many more. Lively Music, fantastic dancing Cons tight leg room Full Review CodyCat Al's Thertrical Review When I first saw the advertisements posted around town that Footloose was coming to Broadway, I have to admit I was a bit excited. I really enjoy a high energy musical, and in my mind I could see Footloose as right up my alley. After reading the opening night preview reviews, it left me wondering whether or not I was expecting something else. To say the least, the reviews were not so good. Personally, I never believe any of these know it alls. Sometimes I wonder if we were seeing the same play. Anyway, still not believing any of these critics, I attended the show just before Thanksgiving. To say the least, the critics were wrong…
