The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber Reviewed December 29
Running time 2:30
The program says that this evening of Andrew Lloyd Webber music was "devised by Andrew Lloyd Webber." Just what does it take to "devise" a concert? What is offered here are six well known and highly capable musical theater stars backed by a large on-stage orchestra performing no fewer than twenty-one of his mellifluous melodies along with six instrumentals ranging from overtures to suites based on his music from specific shows. With the exception of the next to last collection, the material from his mega-hit that is still going strong on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera , no effort is made to present the music in the contexts for which it was written, so in that sense, this evening is very well titled it is a concert presentation of the music of Andrew Lloyd-Webber. However, it is not a theatrical presentation of the

Footloose Author: Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie
Reviewer: David Roberts for Theatre Reviews Limited "Footloose" is the Much Needed Pre-Millennial Jolt!
Call it the "Grease" for the end of the twentieth century. Or call it the "Chicago" for the new millennium. Call it what you will, the new Broadway musical "Footloose" is exactly what New York City commercial theatre needs right now: a fresh musical with a talented, energetic cast and ensemble, and theatre with some "purpose." This Dean Pitchford-Walter Bobbie-Tom Snow collaboration opened at the Richard Rogers Theatre on Thursday, October 22 and promises to be not only a successful Broadway show, but a show with heart and soul. It's rock-pop contemporary score supports an "compelling story with an emotional appeal" (Walter Bobbie).
The musical "Footloose" (like its precedent 1984 film) is the story of Ren McCormack (Jeremy Kushnier) who, with his mother Ethel (Catherine Cox), leaves Chicago after his father leaves them and drives ten hours to Bomont, Texas to live with his aunt and uncle and start life all over. In addition to feeling like an outsider (big city teen trying to exist in a country environment), Ren experiences a town which for some reason has isolated itself from the rest of the world, a town where the Rev. Shaw Moore (Stephen Lee Anderson) has become synonymous with "law" and a night out means a visit to the local Burger Blast.

A Rockin' Aida Comes To San Jose Also see Richard's review of Phantom of the Opera The blockbuster musical from Disney Theatrical Productions, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida , comes roaring into the San Jose Performing Arts Center for a limited three week stay. This marks the start of the 2003-2004 American Musical Theatre of San Jose season. This time, the pop opera has three top flight singers and actors as the main characters of the timeless story of ill fated lovers. West End star Paulette Ivory plays Aida, Jeremy Kushnier is Radames and Goodspeed Opera House star Lisa Brescia is Amneris. I confess that in my earlier review of this spectacle ( see achives ), I was not fond of the music or lyrics in this show. We first saw the original at the Palace Theatre in New York with Heather Headley, Adam Pascal and Sherie Rene Scott, and the only plus side I could find was the singing of Ms. Headley and Ms. Scott. Even Wayne Cilento’s choreography was a mess. When the first National touring company came to the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco with Patrick Cassidy, Simone and Kelli Fournier, I liked it much better. The three had a better handle on the main characters and the music started to grow on me. I also appreciated the sets and lighting better. This current touring production is on the par with the first National production and you cannot ask for better singers, dancers and actors. It’s a rockin' musical that is pleasing to the eye and ear. An Interview with David Rossmer By Ed Feldman Most certainly, diversity of talent would be an advantage in the world of theatre. Yet, sometimes, being an actor and singer isn't enough. Mix in the roles of composer, musician and author and there is definite potential. It might be a bit naïve to think that these talents alone would be a litmus test for success but David Rossmer has passed. David celebrated his 22nd birthday with the cast and crew of Broadway's Titanic and later did the tour. He is the original singer, songwriter and keyboardist for the band Catfish Soup and his new group The Great White Lies will be recording an album this fall. " ... to celebrate the imagination, diversity, and joy unique to musical theatre. To provide a selection of musicals that is diverse in ethnicity, subject matter, style and concept." This, in part, describes the goals of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) and the Festival of New Musicals. Dave Rossmer and collaborator Dan Lipton presented part of their new show JOE!

According to Jeremy Kushnier , one of Broadway's lead actors, life on Broadway is like life as a kid in elementary school again.
Those students who always caused trouble for the teachers and kept you amused during Social Studies back in fifth grade are the same capricious group of people, better known as the cast of the hit musical, Rent
"What's it like backstage? We just goof around, play video games, listen to music-Maroon Five's a big hit in the dressing room. It's kind of like going to school again," said Kushnier, who currently plays Roger in Rent
"The managers are like the principals and the teachers, and then there's all of us who are like the class clowns. Imagine a school where everyone's a class clown!" he said.
With his blond hair tousled in the familiar I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look worn by many a teenage boy, the mellow and laid back Kushnier does look a bit young to be in his thirties.

To Sir, With Love
Pyramid Schemes: Jeremy Kushnier and Paulette Ivory in Elton Johnâs Aida by Howard Altman AidaThrough July 7, Forrest Theatre, 1114 Walnut St., 800-447-7400 A ida It's a very entertaining night of musical theater, despite often-incomprehensible lyrics or any truly memorable songs or even lines. (Rice certainly failed to come up with a "Je-sus Christ, Su-per-star" stunner here.) The whole of Aida is greater than the sum of its parts due to its three stars particularly the two female leads and Disney's amazing stagecraft. The title character is a willful Nubian princess who is captured by Egyptians because she failed to heed her father's warnings about not leaving her village, setting off a chain of events that leads to forbidden love, jealousy, betrayal and, ultimately, death (on which Disney manages to put a happy face). British-born Paulette Ivory, who plays Aida, commands the stage with her presence and her strong voice (even if she, like all the other singers, cannot always be understood). Aida 's best moments come during "My Strongest Suit," the over-the-top ode to haute couture that the very foxy Fournier plays with stunning comic panache. By night's end, she transforms from bubbly babe to scorned woman who finally sees her periods of long denial.

photo by Ben Strothmann Thanksgiving is on the way, and here are three "Leading Men" we’re especially grateful for: Drew Lachey ( Rent ), Gary Beach ( La Cage aux Folles ) and Tim Di Pasqua ("Purpose of Love"). WHY DREW IS DRAWN TO B’WAY
Drew Lachey is best known as one-quarter of the sizzling vocal quartet of 98 Degrees, but now he’s burning up the stage in his Broadway debut. Thanks to playing the part of Mark, Rent has given this graduate from Cincinnati’s The School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) a whole new lease on a theatrical career. Jeremy Kushnier, who co stars as Roger, says, "Drew was really up for the challenge, and he’s worked his ass off. He’s been doing great!" Before he became a platinum pop star, Lachey drove an ambulance in New York. But in 1995, his mother and his brother, Nick, visited him and they saw Miss Saigon . Drew recalls, "Wow, that’s when I realized I missed performing. It lit that spark in me, and two weeks later, Nick called me and said he was starting this group [with Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre]." That became 98 Degrees, which scored such heat-seeking hits as "Because of You," "I Do (Cherish You)," "Invisible Man" and "True to Your Heart" (with Stevie Wonder). In 2002 the Grammy-nominated group decided to take a break, but Drew confirms, "We’ve been talking more about a reunion." Drew, 28, is a genuine and good-hearted guy who’s married to his childhood sweetheart, Lea Dellecave, and they have a German shepherd named Luka. He also has appeared on MTV’s "Newlyweds," starring Nick and his wife, Jessica Simpson. According to their grandmother, the Lachey lads are distantly related to Napoleon. Drew quips, "That would explain my Napoleon complex. I’m 5-foot-6; 5-foot-7 with my hair."

'Aida' steals Hub's heart
By Rosemary Ford
Eagle-Tribune Writer Boston audiences are known the world over for being tough. But something strange happened at a recent performance of "Aida" at Boston's Wang Center for the Performing Arts. Normally silent theatergoers actually "oohed" twice during the performance. Jeremy Kushnier and Paulette Ivory are Radames and Aida in "Aida." The reason was Paulette Ivory, the British-born actress who plays the title character in "Aida," a pop musical based on the opera, featuring music by Sir Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice. Ivory carries herself regally to play Aida, a captured Nubian princess hiding her identity from the Egyptians who've enslaved her. But the best part of her performance comes from her show-stopping rendition of the Gospel-like anthem "The Gods Love Nubia." She hit notes that Whitney Houston would envy. This musical combines great songs with a moving story, that covers forbidden love, hate, war and political upheaval. It begins with Egyptian Captain Radames capturing Aida while on a scouting expedition. Radames spares Aida from the brutal copper mines and sends her to his fiancee, the Egyptian Princess Amneris, as a gift. Aida captures Radames attention. Drawn to her, Radames doesn't know her true royal identity. The two fall in love, yet the war between their two countries keeps them apart.

DATELINE NEW YORK: Ukrainian stars on Broadway by Helen Smindak At 23, Jeremy Kushnier is Broadway's youngest leading man. His work in the musical "Footloose" has brought him nominations for two awards: the Helen Hayes Award and the Theater World Award. He is described by reviewers as "a high-spirited hero, coming across as a sweet guy with just enough edge to be interesting" (Michael Sommers, The Star-Ledger, Newark, N.J.) and "hugely appealing" (David Patrick Stearns, USA Today). When "Footloose" premiered last October, Casper Citron of WOR-Radio declared: "Jeremy Kushnier bursts onto Broadway with the kind of fresh exuberance that strives to please everyone in the audience no matter what their age." Roma Torres of NY1 News, who liked his "James Dean good looks," said he is "a terrible threat: he acts, dances and sings like a seasoned pro." Syndicated columnist Liz Smith called him "the dancin' boy who comes to town from wicked Chicago and shakes things up" and gushed: "Talk about charisma - this kid's going places. Hollywood will knock any minute." The commendations don't appear to have turned this young Canadian head. When we met in the midtown office of the musical's press representatives, just after a Wednesday matinee performance, Mr. Kushnier was poised but unpretentious. Dressed in T-shirt and jeans, a backpack slung over one shoulder, he apologized for keeping me waiting, though he was only a few minutes late. Fielding questions, talking enthusiastically about his first Broadway role and his plans for the future, he radiated a dynamic personality, a charm heightened by large expressive eyes set in a handsome face.
