Saturday, September 11, 2004 Yesterday, I watched the Bill Kurtis doco The Anatomy of September 11th
I remember the total lack of helplessness I felt on that day; I have a good amount of my mother's side of the family in NYC, and not being able to get through (by cell or landline) in the immediate aftermath was awful. What I will not forget, later that October, is going to my 20th high school reunion Stuyvesant HS , in Manhattan). The new Stuy I attended at the old building on 15th and 1st was a staging ground for rescue workers after 9/11, as it is located very close to Ground Zero (see photo below).
Ethan Moses/Stuyvesant Spectator/New York Times

Ground Zero was still smouldering; you couldn't get near the area at the time of my reunion. It was a moving reunion, seeing my classmates after so long, but especially in this context. Many came from afar, as I did, but there are many who still live and work in NYC, some in downtown. So many were shellshocked and in grief over 9/11, but they poured out personal stories. Some even came in late to the reunion, because they were emergency workers or volunteers at the site, and just dropped by between shifts to get together.

This documentary is narrated by bill kurtis, a Kansas native and distinguished graduate of Washburn University School of Law in Topeka.

PROFILE "We conclude, unanimously, that in the field of public education, the doctrine of 'separate-but-equal' has no place." Earl Warren, Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court In May of 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in the case of Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. This case focused national attention on the practice of maintaining racially segregated public schools, which was a common practice at that point in time. This new program offers exclusive insights and interviews from many of the participants who have traditionally shunned the public spotlight resulting from the case that the New York Times has called "the most important legal decision of the 20th century, perhaps of all time." This momentous Supreme Court decision has become one of the pivotal events in the history of the civil rights movement. It continues to serve as a landmark ruling to which many lawyers and social activists refer as they present arguments in support of various issues associated with matters of cultural diversity and racial equity. Although this case carries the name of a Topeka, Kansas resident (Oliver Brown) as well as Topeka's Board of Education, it involved a consolidation of cases from several other venues, including South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia. It evolved as part of a national strategy devised by attorneys associated with the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall.

Kurtis shares success story
By Katie Rogers Published: Wednesday, March 2, 2005 Bill Kurtis [Click to enlarge] Television journalist Bill Kurtis has led a fascinating life - he got his start chasing a tornado and he helped uncover the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War - yet his talk on Wednesday, Feb. 23, resembled mere bullet points of his life, mentioned briefly without any detail or color. Despite the dry content, Kurtis' powerful voice and presence held the attention of the audience. Junior Maddy Kenney said she was impressed with Kurtis' catchy speaking style.

By LINDA STASI Scott Peterson Email Archives Print Reprint August 16, 2004 WHAT do you think is the most common form of death for pregnant women in American cities? No, it's not complications of pregnancy or childbirth. It's not poor pre-natal care. It's not pregnancy-related blood diseases or anything else you might imagine. The truth is that the most prevalent cause of death among pregnant women is murder. Yes, extraordinary cases like the Laci Peterson murder case and the recent murder of Lori Hacking have brought the issue to light, but who could guess that those gruesome murders were the tip of the iceberg. Tonight " Fatal Fathers: A Bill Kurtis Special Report explores the causes and highlights the warning signs — and there are always warning signs — through several cases.

He never lived outside of Kansas, yet William Allen White achieved international fame for his hometown opinions. Fame came to White in response to his essay "What's the Matter with Kansas?" that sparked a Republican victory for Democratic candidates in the 1896 national election. White started his journalism career at age 11 when he was hired as a "printer's devil" to haul water, ink presses, sweep floors, and deliver newspapers. In later years White borrowed money to purchase the Emporia Gazette newspaper and settled into the community and political life of Emporia. White's newspaper articles covering state and national politics and international affairs achieved wide readership. Emporia became an important stop for politicans and national leaders seeking White's advice. White's image on a U.S. postage stamp was one of the most prominent awards he earned during his career. Few newspapermen receive this honor. William Allen White

It was a typical June afternoon in Kansas. Suddenly the weather changed. A tornado dipped out of the sky and began its path of destruction across Topeka. Bill Kurtis knew he had to select his words carefully so that the television viewers would take immediate action, yet he wanted to avoid panic. In a calm, but deliberate voice Kurtis stated simply, "For God's sake, take cover." That 1966 tornado changed his life as he discovered television's power to impact people's lives on a much larger scale. Throughout his broadcast career Kurtis has served as an on-air news correspondent and reporter in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. Recent projects include

Bill Kurtis Biography
By Lori Wilson
The lecture, sponsored by the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media, will be at 1:30 p.m. at Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. Gloria Freeland, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications and director of the Huck Boyd Center, said she is excited about Kurtis' lecture because of his successful career in journalism combined with his Kansas background. "Kurtis will bring to K-State his perspective of many years of international media experience as well as his deep appreciation for small town and rural life," Freeland said. Although Kurtis, an Independence, Kan. native, left Kansas more than 30 years ago, the state is still an important part of his life. One of Kurtis' current projects is perhaps his most challenging: the revitalization of Sedan, Kan. After a visit to Sedan, a dwindling community near Independence, Kurtis began buying commercial buildings and turned them into gift shops, restaurants and donut shops. Kurtis' restoration doesn't stop at rebuilding downtown Sedan. He wants to create a tourism hub, including visits to his 8,000-acre buffalo ranch and a replica of Laura Ingalls Wilder's cabin. The area, which Kurtis' family owns, was once home to the author of "Little House on the Prairie." Kurtis also owns part of the largest tall-grass prairie left on the globe, which he plans to protect.
