I didn't want to be the typical absentee landlord in this town of 1,400, which has been bypassed by the main highway and is in the poorest county in Kansas. So I bought a building, actually seven buildings, and we're restoring them all to create a tourist destination.

Kurtis' narration was done on a tight deadline. Kansas International Museum officials said Kurtis had been in Saudi Arabia before returning to southeast Kansas during the weekend. On Monday, he began recording audio files for narration for about 80 "Czars" exhibits, officials said. The recording session originated from a radio station in Independence, and audio files were transferred by Internet onto a special Web site designed by Smith Audio-Visual, of Topeka. However, the files didn't begin arriving via the Internet until around 9 p.m. Monday, officials said. "We thought we'd have it Monday afternoon," said Uwe Sattler, technical manager for Sennheiser Electronic Corp., which designed the guidePORT audio system for the museum. "We had the files for the first three galleries by 11 o'clock, but there are 11 galleries in the museum." The last text file was completed at about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Sattler said. Technicians met at the museum at 5 a.m. to finalize the audio clips, which guests heard starting at about 9:30 a.m., when the museum welcomed its first guests.

Terry Savage talks money with Bill Kurtis
January 28, 2001 BY TERRY SAVAGE SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST I've known Bill Kurtis for years, since my days at Channel 2 News, and I'm always amazed and impressed by his genuine warmth and interest in everyone he meets. Whether out on an interview or in a social setting or establishing immediate rapport with the photographer, Kurtis reaches out with an aura that flows over you like the rays of the sun on a spring day. His unfailing charitable contributions, whether acting as emcee or celebrity auctioneer or lending his personal touch to a video about hospitalized children, endear him to Chicago's civic community. But Kurtis has moved beyond his years as everyone's favorite local anchorman (with former partner Walter Jacobson). Now, he's globally acclaimed for his award-winning television documentaries, and he's also a successful entrepreneur. Then he reveals an environmental and a historic commitment few have seen. Kurtis is a Renaissance man.

If I Call Bill Kurtis Crazy, Is That Libel?
First published 3/10/1999
I think Bill Kurtis is doing all those murders. How else does he know so much about it? He's done all these murders, and he's gotten away with it, and that's partly why he does those shows: to pin his murders on someone else. He's very clever, Bill Kurtis. Clever... but crazy! They could put Bill Kurtis in jail, but what's the point? He's always there anyway, walking around in his suit, talking about DNA evidence and promising more juicy tidbits about some horrible grisly murder right after these commercials. I guess that's the ironic thing: technically, he's gotten away with all these crimes, but the fact of the matter is he's in jail all the time anyway. He just gets to wear his own clothes. I don't know why insist on having so many murder shows on A&E. If you kill 32 people and chop them up and bury them in your basement, which is that: art or entertainment? Maybe they should rename A&E "The Arts and Entertainment and Horrible Grisly Pictures of Real People Actually Being Killed Network." But then, if they were really going to be honest... To read the rest you have to buy the book!

BOOK REVIEWS: Bill Kurtis on the Death Penalty; Ms. Moffett Becomes a Teacher Reviewed by David M. Kinchen
Huntington News Network Book Critic Hinton (HNN) The Death Penalty on Trial: Crisis in American Justice (PublicAffairs, 219 pages, $25.00) by Bill Kurtis and (PublicAffairs, 272 pages, $25.00) by Abby Goodnough. Kurtis and Goodnough deal respectively with two crises in America : Our criminal justice system and our public education system, especially in big cities. Writing in the purposeful but intriguing style readers will recognize from his TV shows, Kurtis shows how the power of the prosecutor, who has the resources of state, county and local law enforcement on his side, along with the power of such holdovers of the past as grand juries, can end up swaying juries, despite the flimsiness of the evidence. As a reporter who has covered murder cases, I recognize what took place in the trials of Krone and Kimbell. Goodnough followed Moffett through her seven-week course and into a first-grade classroom at P.S. 92 in Flatbush, Brooklyn . She kept in close touch with Moffett and her new colleagues throughout the first year, writing an award-winning series for The Times.

That s because they all went to the bill kurtis School of TrueCrime Voiceover. If that school really existed, I would totally go.
http://www.angst-identprone.org/archives/2005/05/bill_kurtis_tel.html
Main May 12, 2005 Bill Kurtis tells me to jump, I ask how high The other day Owens and I were having lunch at Nancy's Pizza (motto: "Where mirth goes to die"), and the waitress/cook/only other person in the place besides the two of us had the TV tuned to some Discovery Channel knockoff of American Justice . We couldn't not pay attention to it, no matter how hard we tried, especially given the overwrought narration. The phrase "But Johnny ... was in trouble " was used, verbatim, more than once, as the Feds tracked Johnny down for whatever it is he did. "God," said Owens. "All of these guys on all of these shows talk exactly the same way." "I know," I replied. "That's because they all went to the Bill Kurtis School of True-Crime Voiceover." If that school really existed, I would totally go. Okay, that barely merits an entry, and I still owe Sven an answer to his challenge . That'll have to wait, though, because now I have to get ready for a... um... an ambiguous event wherein another young man and myself meet for dinner and/or drinks. (Nobody's used the D-word yet, and I'll be damned if I'm the first.) Wish me luck. Posted in: My Life

CHICAGO Bill Kurtis seemed ready to do a slow fade from television just a few years ago. But look at him now. The old-school broadcaster and native Kansan has emerged as one of cable's brand names. From his first job at WIBW in Topeka, where he spent a legendary night in 1966 covering a tornado, Kurtis had won respect for his no-nonsense style and fame for his commanding air and distinctive voice. After 30 years which included stints in Chicago and a national presence on CBS Kurtis scaled down his on-air duties. He started traveling more. And he devoted more time to a small side business making documentaries for cable. Talk about great timing. Just as Kurtis' network career was winding down, cable TV was taking off. And fueling that rocket was original, nonfiction programming, the kind Kurtis would learn to crank out in volume. Together Kurtis and the network prospered.
