Under looser underwriting rules, producer says New Explorers series could stay
Originally published in Current , July 21, 1997 Bill Kurtis is back in Chicago from the TV critics' press briefings in Pasadena, where he promoted his next season of The New Explorers "I would be at PBS todaywe had the money on the tableif we had been able to give 30 seconds." Kurtis refers to the 30-second credits that many big-city public TV stations give to underwritersthat PBS will not accept on national programs. The frustrated, back-against-the-wall plaint, coming from noted ex-CBS newsman, provides a bitter new anecdote for pubcasters who argue that public TV's noncommercial definition of itself is too restrictive and perhaps wholly obsolete. Bill McCarter, head of the program's co-producing station, WTTW, and a longtime advocate of marketplace funding, would endorse the view. The Peabody Award-winning series won't disappear immediately from public TV, and will generally get much more airtime in coming months. While Kurtis Productions will make the usual eight New Explorers As ever, Kurtis will tag along with scientists as they dig, peer, fly and dive into their own specialized mysteries. In the past year, he followed biologists probing the deaths of manatees, anthropologists exploring abandoned pueblo settlement, and climatologists speculating why the island of Trinidad is sinking. His favorite episode of all, last April, took him to Nepal, seeking the model for the fictional perfect valley of Shangri-La.

I apologize to those of you who read this blog from all over the world and find many of the posts are rather North-American centric (is there such a word?) in nature. After all, what you see here is a reflection of my own life and is basically my "random observations and opinions", so it naturally includes much that would only make sense or be important to someone who lives in the "new world". I promise to understand the same point, when I read your blogs from New Zealand, South Africa and Lebanon. Bill Kurtis had the ultimate dramatic voice for the type of shows he was doing. He started with Investigative Reports and American Justice, then moved on to Special Reports and the Cold Case files. It got to the point that the entire channel looked like Bill TV for a while. Whatever show he hosted, his voice and mannerism carried it and it still does. But then I discovered City Confidential and its "voice", that of Paul Winfield . This guy's voice was made for a show like this. If you haven't watched the show, you owe it to yourself to check it out. And maybe you get lucky and see the episode about your own city or town. They each have a secret or two. You'll see.

Bill Kurtis to deliver third annual Huck Boyd Lecture in Community Media
There's no place like Kansas for Bill Kurtis. Kurtis, the anchor of three A&E Network series, including the Emmy Award-winning "Investigative Reports," will visit K-State Thursday, Sept. 26, to deliver the third annual Huck Boyd Lecture in Community Media. The lecture, which is sponsored by the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media, will be at 1:30 p.m. in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. Gloria Freeland, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications and director of the Huck Boyd Center, said she is excited about Kurtis' lecture because of his successful career in journalism combined with his Kansas background. "Bill Kurtis will bring to K-State his perspective of many years of international media experience, as well as his deep appreciation for small town and rural life," Freeland said. Although Kurtis, an Independence, Kan., native, left the state more than 30 years ago, Kansas is still an important part of his life.

Bill Kurtis — ‘One of the reasons why we created the The New Explorers is to show students how exciting science can be. I've taken viewers on adventures to far-off places where scientists around the world are solving the great mysteries of our time – whether they're working deep within the ocean, peering into volcanoes or reaching for the stars.
Teachers asked me how they could get the The New Explorers programs into their classrooms. They wanted curricula designed around the videos. We responded by creating eld n . Based on Learning Standards, this innovative new program integrates technology that includes:
  • CD-ROMs, teacher and student versions The New Explorers Video on-line internet resources (follow me as I travel around the world) rich science content
Not only do eld n students experience real-life contemporary science issues, but eld n teachers get high-level training on applied technology and problem-based content. The eld n interactive multi-media system equips kids to work with technology while using the scientific method . In addition

NOAA HONORS BROADCASTER BILL KURTIS WITH MARK TRAIL AWARD Now in its ninth year, the awards program honors individuals and organizations that use or provide NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards receivers or transmitters to save lives and protect property. Seventeen award recipients were recognized nationally this year. Kurtis is being honored for contributing his voice, studio and editing skills to the production of NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards public service announcements for the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Wichita, Kan., and later made available to National Weather Service offices across the country via the Internet. Conrad C. Lautenbacher
The Mark Trail Awards are named for the nationally syndicated comic strip character that serves as the campaign symbol for the NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards program. Since 1995, Jack Elrod, writer and illustrator of Mark Trail, and King Features Syndicate have been strong advocates for publicizing severe weather safety through the use of the radios. In recent years, the strip's education message has included the fact that anyone listening to NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards has instant access to the same lifesaving weather reports and all-hazards information provided to meteorologists, emergency personnel and the media.

Choose something you like to do. I know it's a cliche, and you've heard it over and over. But the reason is, you're going to have to work long and hard to achieve any success. You better like it or life is going to be terrible.
Bill Kurtis

I didn't want to be the typical absentee landlord in this town of 1,400, which has been bypassed by the main highway and is in the poorest county in Kansas. So I bought a building, actually seven buildings, and we're restoring them all to create a tourist destination.
Bill Kurtis

I never wanted to retire. I wanted to kind of shift my work pattern so I could stay fresh and invigorated, and use the experience that I had gained in 30 years, but in a slightly different direction.
Bill Kurtis

I think I'm so old I'm in. We call it the 'Tony Bennett Syndrome.' For some reason, young people think I'm cool.
Bill Kurtis
If you're a producer, you always spend too much money because you want that shot - and you're willing to spend a bundle to get it. Bill Kurtis My personal philosophy is I'm running a 100-yard dash, and I haven't reached the end.
