August 7, 2005
The open air concert featuring the Calder Quartet will be held on the grounds of the Schoolhouse at the Bluebird Fishing Camp. Scheduled for Sunday evening at 5:30pm, those attending are urged to bring a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy an evening of classical music on the bluff above the Big Hole River. The Calder Quartet has created a sensation with its stunning combination of traditional chamber music and the avant-garde. Nominated resident string quartet of Los Angeles by critics, the group has been praised for its accomplished and touching performance. The foursome has repeatedly appeared on NPR’s Performance Today, WQXR in New York, and KMozart in Los Angeles. They were recently nominated by the L.A. Weekly for Outstanding Classical Music ensemble of 2004. The Quartet takes its name from the American sculptor and mobile artist, Alexander Calder. It has been said of Calder that his one aim was to create chords and cadences of unknown movements. At this first ever concert on the banks of southwest Montana’s Big Hole, the Calder will play three pieces. They include Smetana’s Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, ‘From My Life’; Griffes’s 2 Sketches on Indian Themes for String Quartet; and Dvorak’s Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, ‘ The American.’

Charles and UNC-CH C harles Kuralt was one of the most beloved TV journalists in our country. There were bigger names: Walter Cronkite was called the most trusted man in America. Edward R. Murrow was a pioneer, a legend. But audiences loved Charles Kuralt. Kuralt had a soft spot for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He was a member of the Board of Visitors, and he was the host for group after group of students on the set of the "Sunday Morning" Show on CBS. In addition to the Learning Center, two important tributes to him are in place at UNC-CH: Voice of America and the Broadcasting Board of Governors created the Charles Kuralt Fellowship in International Broadcasting in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It gives a recent bachelor's or master's graduate a full-time paid job as a reporter or producer for a year at Voice of America in Washington, D.C. VOA is the largest international broadcasting service of the U.S. government. Each week it airs more than 700 hours of radio and TV programming in 52 languages around the world. The Charles Kuralt Collection in the Louis Round Wilson Library consists of nearly 250,000 of his papers, manuscripts and other works donated by Petie Kuralt, his widow. The collection opened on Feb. 25, 1999. The collection includes documents and oral histories about Kuralt and his work and a Charles Kuralt exhibit in the lobby of the Southern Historical Collection on the fourth floor of Wilson Library.

"I couldn't possibly fail to disagree with you less." 6 June 2005 Gearing up The actual route has yet to be set, though there will definitely be a stop in Philadelphia (thank you, Donna ), and one or two others will probably suggest themselves in the next few days as I peer into the old Rand McNally. I expect this trip to take 17 days, cover 5,000 miles, and cost $2,800. We shall see. Permalink to this item (posted at 9:00 AM) 26 June 2005 The official WT05 FAQ When does the World Tour actually happen? It begins on 4 July, and continues for a bit more than two weeks. What makes it a World Tour, exactly, since you're not leaving the States or anything? Two things: it's awfully damned long, and much of it is through relatively unfamiliar territory. How long is "awfully damned long"? The first four of these jaunts averaged about 4500 miles; this one will be a tad longer than that. You've done this four times before. Why do it again? Because I can. More to the point, it's good for me to get out of town, and it's good for my car to get a serious workout once in a while. Will you be blogging every day?
