Charles Kuralt goes High Tech
a GPS enabled bus travels the country
[vote for against This idea takes Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" series and upgrades it, so it is more high tech with a roving GPS enabled bus that does human interest stories. A fuller treatment with pictures can be found at: nreilly , Oct 15 2000 the bus http://www.geocitie...elsonreilly/sl.html nreilly , Oct 15 2000, last modified Oct 17 2004] link In your webpages, you refer back to the success of reality television shows. I think the reason reality television occasionally works is that editing and player selection leaves us with characters in whose fates we become interested. We tune in to see what becomes of a person, how their relationships develop, and so on. Your concept is one where participants change each week; the episodes are tied together by hardware, not by people. I'm not sure a bus will capture the interest of viewers in the same way that a group of people would.

Announcer V/O: And now we return to Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt.
[Dissolve to old, balding, chubby newsman Charles Kuralt, fondly remembered for his "On the Road" segments on the CBS Evening News, who sits on the set of his long-running CBS TV series "Sunday Morning" and addresses the camera in his cadenced, folksy style.]
Charles Kuralt: Well, it seems that's all the time we have this Sunday morning. It has come time for us to part, you and I, for I am retiring from CBS News. I have been "On the Road" now for thirty-seven years, and I will miss it. I will miss it ... much. I will miss the thunder of the big diesels as they roar by me. I will miss the inviting windows of well-stocked general stores reflected in the rear-view mirror. I will miss the sight of young cottonwoods and and old rattlesnake nests, of winds that blow, and rivers that flow. But, mostly, I will miss the sex.
For that is what brought me to the road in the first place, so many years ago: the promise of sex with a string of anonymous partners across this great land. And, oh, how that promise has been fulfilled.

Remembering Charles Kuralt

by Ralph Grizzle, Edwin M. Yoder
The Globe Pequot Press, 2001 O n the front of this book there's a picture of television journalist Charles Kuralt and a photographer in a field of tall grass. Kuralt is standing, with his sunglasses perched on his nose, wearing a checked shirt slightly too small from his frame. The photographer is kneeling, and both are peering at the same thing somewhere off to the right. Kuralt is fully engaged, alert, with a small smile on his face. I think, after reading this memoir of friends, that it is obvious this is how Charles Kuralt liked to live his life: intense and focused on creating a picture with words that we in his TV audience could embrace. Many of the reminiscences in the book point out that Kuralt found himself a niche in the world of TVãa niche where some of his talents may have been wasted, but where he was comfortable until he decided to pull the plug. A brilliant writer and reporter, Kuralt was a worthy successor to Edward R. Morrow, but never had a worn-torn London to report on to show his reporting "chops."

Road ends for Charles Kuralt
By Rayner Pike, Associated Press writer
NEW YORK Charles Kuralt, the avuncular CBS newsman whose "On The Road" reports celebrated offbeat America from unicyclists to horse traders to gasoline-pumping poets died on the Fourth of July. He was 62.
Kuralt died at New York Hospital from complications from lupus, an inflammatory disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys and nervous system.
"He connected to the essence of America better than any woman or man of his generation," former CBS News president Howard Stringer said. "It's a totally inappropriate death, but on a most appropriate day."
Kuralt made a career of searching for the insignificant and elevating it to prose and visual poetry. He kept pitching the idea of "On the Road" at CBS until the network agreed to a three-month trial in 1967.
The first stop was Vermont for a piece on the fall foliage, with this Kuralt narration:
"It is death that causes this blinding show of color, but it is a fierce and flaming death. To drive along a Vermont country road in this season is to be dazzled by the shower of lemon and scarlet and gold that washes across your windshield."
Kuralt stayed "On the Road" for the next 13 years, logging up to 50,000 miles a year on back roads and byways with a two-man camera crew, wearing out half a dozen campers. Then he brought the same outlook and sensibility to CBS's "Sunday Morning" for 15 more years.

Charles Kuralt's People
Timeless, insightful and entertaining, Charles Kuralt's award-winning "People" columns lived but for one brief year - 1956. Kuralt went to CBS; "People" went to reside only on microfilm. Until now. Written while Kuralt was a reporter for the Charlotte News, "People" appears collectively in print for the first time ever. The 169 columns, written when Kuralt was only 22, represent some of the bard's best work and mark the beginning of a dialog that the journalist continued with Americans for more than four decades. Resonating with themes of hope and goodness, "People" still appears as fresh and relevant today as in 1956, a testament to the extraordinary talent of a reporter who found stories where no one else thought to look. "Each day I would seek out some cop or kid or cab driver," Kuralt wrote of his experience at the Charlotte News, "and tell his story in a few hundred words . . . I used to walk bravely up to panhandlers and crapshooters - the sort of people others avoided - and strike up conversation." Those conversations will ring familiar to those who watched Kuralt's Emmy-winning television shows "On the Road" and "Sunday Morning." Kuralt's style and substance were essentially unchanged over the years - from his days as a rookie reporter to his final years as a veteran journalist.

One of the newest members of the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery is Charles Kuralt, a distinguished alumni of the university. He was born in Wilmington, NC, in 1934, a true Tarheel. He loved common people and spent his career pointing out the good aspects of life during a time of war and despair. While he attended UNC, he was an active member in many organizations like Order of the Grail, Order of the Old Well, Phi Eta Sigma, and St. Anthony Hall. Despite all these, he spent the majority of his time at The Daily Tar Heel , which he edited his senior year. Actually, he spent so much time at the Tar Heel; he ended up failing all of his other classes. He was later given a diploma once he became a distinguished journalist. Straight out of college without a degree, Charles Kuralt worked as an intern at The Charlotte News . After a year, he won CBS's Ernie Pyle award. Instead of accepting the award and feeling proud, young Charles asked, "if you like my work, why don’t you just hire me." They did and he became the youngest CBS correspondent at age 25. He covered the Vietnam War, and stories all over the world including 23 Latin American countries. The gentle man that he was, Charles Kuralt did not enjoy wars, nor covering them in the midst of bullets and bloody soldiers. He dropped hard news reporting and took to the road to do his own show called "On the Road with Charles Kuralt." Charles had a special talent for storytelling and finding interesting people to tell stories about. For his show, he traveled across the country searching for the people who uniquely represented America and Americans. He continued to work for CBS until 1994 and on July 4, 1997 from heart failure and lupus.

"The Goodliest Land" Address by Charles Kuralt at Scenic America’s National Conference
May 12, 1997
Baltimore, Maryland Television chronicler and North Carolina native Charles Kuralt died on
Independence Day 1997. Less than two months earlier he had given the
keynote address at Scenic America’s national conference in Baltimore.
Those who attended will remember Kuralt’s easy-going style and the way
he opened the floor for questions encouraging the audience to "shoot the
breeze" with him. Mr. Kuralt was a member of Scenic America’s Advisory
Board. Charles Kuralt’s address of May 12, 1997 is reprinted below.
I’m really honored to be with you. This all started years ago when William Least Heat-Moon, who has written the best book about the back roads of America [ Blue Highways ], told me how much fun he had addressing this organization. He must not be here tonight or we would have spent all afternoon together. But then Sally Oldham and Meg McGuire [of Scenic America] really got serious about their invitations to me, and I’m really glad to be here at last. I do feel a little diffident about talking to a room full of people who manifestly know more than I do about the subject. I know a thing or two about America. I know, for example, how the country works. In the seventies, when I was trying to put two daughters through expensive eastern colleges, I took on some writing jobs on the side. The editor of
