Charles Kuralt
Brings Us Back
Along The Backroads
by David Boles July 14, 1997 The great writer and newsman Charles Kuralt died ten days ago due to complications from Lupus. He was 62. I've been struggling to find an appropriate way to honor Kuralt and to do my little bit to fill the giant hole he leaves in the essence of all of us whether we know we've been made emptier by his passing or not. Charles Kuralt's Legacy
As a young lad growing up in the heartland of Lincoln, Nebraska, one of the fruits of the week was to awaken early on Sunday mornings to watch Charles Kuralt on CBS's Sunday Morning as he brought us the beautiful bounty of the truth of plain folks' lives beyond the byways and backroads of America. There is melancholy in the wind and sorrow in the grass. - Charles Kuralt The Connection
I connected with that gravelly voice, pudgy face and balding head not because he looked like most of my neighbors and friends I felt at one with Kuralt because of his vision into the simple, undiscovered pleasures of life that many of us miss without a nudge or a prod in a succinct direction. Kuralt make his vision universally palpable because he knew how to write a perfect sentence. His words weren't fancy. His words didn't profess to be pendantic. His thoughts were soft-spoken, plain and they hit you like a sledge hammer between the eyes when strung together into paragraphs becoming pealing pearls of Kuralt wisdom. I comforted myself with the thought that if you're not going to cover the big stories, at least you can travel around the country in an old bus, and maybe get al feeling for the country that you might miss if you were forever covering important stuff. Going slow, feeling the seasons change CBS didn't even know where I was; they didn't care where I was. But I think maybe I did get a feeling for the country that I might have missed if I were forever covering only the big stories.

The first story broadcast in 1967 described the fall foliage in Vermont: "It is death that causes this blinding show of color, but it is a fierce and flaming death. To drive along a Vermont country road in this season is to be dazzled by the shower of lemon and scarlet and gold that washes across your windshield." His story on the North Platte Canteen was first broadcast in 1977. During the 13 years of this series, he drove his motor home 50,000 miles a year with a two-man camera crew. He hosted the CBS Sunday Morning TV program 1979-1994. His book

CHARLES KURALT REMEMBERED
July 4, 1997
Jim Lehrer remembers the work of Charles Kuralt. Charles Kuralt one of the most distinguished voices in American journalism, died in New York City, July 4, from complications from lupus. He was 62 years old. Kuralt, best known for his "On the Road" dispatches and his "Sunday Morning" broadcast, joined CBS News in 1957. Upon hearing of his death, President Clinton released a statement saying, "Charles Kuralt's extraordinary imagination and skill gave America a unique view of itself. He helped us see the beauty and strength of character of our small towns and countryside. In so doing, he brought all members of the American family closer together. His passing on Independence Day reminds us in a poignant way of God's gift that is America." He will be remembered. CHARLES KURALT: You can’t drive very far on the back roads before you make a splendid discovery: America is not homogenized, not yet. Her accents are as different as her landscapes. That is the authentic sound of December in the Chesapeake Bay country, but take a gander at that old gander. She’s Erline Snow, who learned goose talk 60 years ago down home at Powells Point, North Carolina, and has been conversing with the Canada geese every autumn since. Hiroshi Naguchi doesn’t fool around.

John Steinbeck vs Charles Kuralt
Who Said It First?
The novelist John Steinbeck and CBS Newscaster Charles Kuralt knew and wrote about roads. Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath , published in 1939, is a classic of road literature; its description of Dust Bowl refugees driving to California along U.S. 66 has given the root an enduring nickname ("The Mother Road"). Kuralt, in his CBS news feature "On the Road" and books, sought the off-beat along the country's back roads. Steinbeck and Kuralt are sometimes cited as sources of similar quotes about the Interstate System, and the Rambler wishes to set the record straight. In 1960, John Steinbeck made a 10,000-mile, 38-State circuit of the country in a homemade camper, nicknamed Rocinante (after the deluded knight errant Don Quixote's worn out horse), in the company of a poodle nicknamed Charley. Steinbeck described his journey in Travels With Charley: In Search of America (The Viking Press, 1962). Having dawdled through New England, Steinbeck became concerned that he might get stuck in the snows of North Dakota. So he decided to speed his trip by temporarily putting aside his plan to avoid "the great high speed slashes of concrete and tar called 'thruways,' or 'super-highways.'" Leaving Erie, Pennsylvania, he commented:

His deep, melodic voice that puts one at ease and brings a smile at the same time, seems to be the first thing people think of when they remember Charles Kuralt. He was a laid back, cubby and somewhat wrinkled journalist, who had a talent for listening and finding the inner charm within ordinary people. Ralph Grizzle was commissioned by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to conduct a series of oral histories with family, friends and colleagues of Charles Kuralt. What comes across is the deep affection everyone felt for this gentle man and the respect for him as a seasoned journalist. Charles Bishop Kuralt was born on September 10, 1934, in Wilmington, North Carolina. His parents had driven an hour south to the hospital from the 100-acre tobacco farm of his maternal grandparents in Onslow County. He was raised as a farm boy, and his rural roots were evident throughout his life’s work. The evenings of his youth were spent on the front porch with the family listening to his grandfather’s long yarns and his grandmother reading travel books, poetry and short stories. Kuralt credits his love of words and the rhythm of language to her readings. While in high school, Kuralt entered broadcasting as a disc jockey and news writer for ABC-affiliate WAYS. In college, he did radio drama for the campus radio station WUNC, then became editor of

ON REPORTING
THE TRICYCLE PRINCIPLEKEEPING OUT OF THE STORY
Ideally, the reporter in television, I think, should be like the old-fashioned newspaper reporter. The guy standing in the corner making notes. I remember a famous story from the 1964 Goldwater campaign. Many of Barry Goldwater's supporters were neurotic when the press came in. They thought there was a great media conspiracy against their candidate. I think it's Tom Wicker of the New York Times who told this story, could have been somebody else. But he said at some rally, a woman sidled up to an aide to Senator Goldwater, and said, "I think you should know this, there's a man over there writing down everything he's saying." (laughs) That was Tom Wicker, or that was the reporter. That's the proper role of the reporter. The guy who's leaving himself out of the story, and standing in the corner writing down everything that's going on.
JOURNALISM SCHOOL
I'm afraid I'm innocent of any journalism courses in college or elsewhere. I suppose sometimes it shows, but everything I learned, I learned on the job.
