Charles Kuralt Learning Center
The Charles Kuralt Learning Center , in Carroll Hall, is a showplace of the School. Kuralt's widow, Suzanna, donated the contents of his penthouse office in Manhattan to the School. "We've recreated the office as much as possible as a tribute to Charles and to his excellence as a journalist," said Richard Cole, dean of the School. "Charles had a soft spot in his heart for our School, and we're mighty grateful to Mrs. Kuralt and the family." The office suite, in Carroll 281, symbolized Kuralt in many ways. It is solid, sturdy and elegant, with Oriental rugs, paneled walls and a brick fireplace. Memorabilia from Charles' long career covers the walls. The tall mahogany bookshelves hold 12 of his Emmys and two of his Peabody awards. "Charles referred to it as a gentleman's writing room," said Karen Beckers, Kuralt's assistant and longtime colleague at CBS. "He wanted it to have some charm and elegance. He didn't want a sterile working environment." In addition to being open to visitors, the center is a site for students to study Kuralt's work and is used for special occasions. Anyone who would like to tour the Kuralt Learning Center is welcome 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Arrangements also may be made for other times by calling (919) 962-1204.

Journalist Ralph Grizzle s moving portrait of the great charles kuralt and his paradoxes.

Forgiving Charles Kuralt By Ralph Grizzle On the Road with Charles Kuralt. The legendary reporter in his youth. By Ralph Grizzle I will remember Independence Day 1997, not for its glorious displays of fireworks or for its patriotic celebrations in city squares, but as the day that Charles Kuralt died. His death affected me so profoundly that he occupied my mind even as my family and I sat watching fireworks burst streaks of color over Asheville, North Carolina. In fact, from that day on, I have devoted much of my own life to researching and writing about his. In subsequent months, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill commissioned me to conduct a series of oral histories with Kuralt's friends, family and colleagues. Sixty of my interviews now accompany the vast Charles Kuralt Collection, a historical archive of nearly 60,000 letters, scripts, memos and other memorabilia that Kuralt gave to the university for safekeeping. As I talked with people whose lives had intersected with Kuralt's, I heard time and again that Charles was just what you saw on television - genuine, sincere, sweet, caring, "a national hero," the "poet of America's back roads." Reactions to Kuralt's marital infidelity ranged from censure to sympathy. Faced with two disparate images of Kuralt - one whose friends characterized him as a national hero; the other of a man who cheated on his wife for nearly three decades - I found it difficult to reconcile how I should remember him. His moral frailty contrasted sharply with the seemingly strong convictions of the television personality who espoused goodness and character and virtue.

Charles Kuralt, CBS' poet of small-town America, dies at 62
'He cared about telling stories'
July 4, 1997
Web posted at: 6:41 p.m. EDT (2241 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) - Charles Kuralt, the folksy CBS newsman whose reports from the small towns and back roads of America endeared him to millions, died Friday at a New York City hospital. He was 62. Kuralt died from complications from lupus, an inflammatory disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys and nervous system. His brother, who runs a bookstore in their native North Carolina, said Kuralt had been ill for a couple of months. "He was feeling pretty good yesterday, so it's very unexpected," Wallace Kuralt said. "He was one of the true, greatly talented people in television," said Walter Cronkite, his former CBS colleague. "I'm terribly shocked. ... I didn't have any idea Charles was in mortal danger. There probably wasn't any more of a patriotic or loving man in television or the country than Charles." Balding, pudgy and gifted with the ability to see poetry where others saw the prosaic, Kuralt logged up to 50,000 miles a year in a motor home. Rather than condescend to what some called "the little people," Kuralt delighted in their stories, in their passions, in what was genuine and real and made them unique. He did pieces on a school for unicyclists, horse-trading and a gas station/poetry factory. He interviewed professional wrestlers, a 104-year-old entertainer who performed in nursing homes, lumberjacks, whittlers and farmers.

The Charles Kuralt Trail
I n the mid-Atlantic Coastal plain of Virginia and North Carolina, mysterious, dark backwater rivers flow into estuarine sounds contained by the Outer Banks. Here, eleven national wildlife refuges and a national fish hatchery are working to conserve fish, wildlife, plants and their native habitats. The Charles Kuralt Trail has been established to help people enjoy these wildlands and to recognize the broadcast journalist who shared the delights and wonders of out-of-the-way places like these. T his region is called the Roanoke, Tar, Neuse, Cape Fear Ecosystem; named for the rivers which flow into the Albemarle, Currituck, and Pamlico Sounds. The rivers and sea meet to create an incredibly productive and important place for fish and wildlife. Some of the wildest lands in the mid-Atlantic are found within these refuges.
Photo by Shaun Kane of Knotts Island E ach of these national wildlife refuges and the hatchery have established a Kuralt site to provide you with recreational opportunities. The roads are marked with signs to help you find the sites. There's no particular route for the trail - plan your travels according to your time, interest, and what each season may offer. Springtime is great for experiencing songbird migration when the forests are filled with song. Each fall brings a spectacular sight as thousands of ducks, geese, and swans gather around the lakes and sounds.

I n his heart, Charles Kuralt must be more a writer than a television broadcaster.
The TV host who popularized being ``on the road'' despite his assured deference to writer Jack Kerouac and singer Willie Nelson, tells us as much between the lines of his latest travelogue.
Of course, I've always considered Kuralt a good writer; it showed in his bearing before the camera that he was a man enamored with the language written.
Not that TV and writing can't go together.
Kuralt's success as a writer of bestsellers undoubtedly owes much to the recognition television affords him.
What never struck me until I read his latest book, however, is the mild but persistent disdain Kuralt harbors toward television.
Kuralt's book, Charles Kuralt's America, details his trips and has some telling comments tucked away amid his paeans of praise and adoration for a near-dozen outstanding places in the United States.
Unlike his previous outings across the states, Kuralt made this latest sojourn by himself. Without any mobile caravan, without cameras other than what he carried, without technicians, without producer-directors, without public relations people; in fact, without CBS, his long-term employer with whom, Kuralt says, he carried on a 37-year love affair.

OFF THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT
by Rip Rense Originally published by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on the occasion of Mr. Kuralt's induction into the Hall of Fame. It was one of the last interviews he did.) If Charles Kuralt were himself the subject of one of those poetic feature stories on CBS's "Sunday Morning," it might begin something like this. . .(Cue the baroque trumpet fanfare and the sun logo. Cue Charles Osgood.)
Careers are born in mysterious ways. Some of us struggle for a lifetime, never finding our niche, and others discover their direction almost from the time they abandon their baby shoes. Mozart composed concertos as a child. Steinbeck put pencil to yellow pad and created fiction before he was in his teens. Ella Fitzgerald was singing almost from the time she began to speak. And for as long as Charles Kuralt can remember, he wanted to be a journalist.
(Cut to the subject's office, a little writing room on top of a building in New York City, described by Kuralt a "shabby genteel, a very small, down-on-its-luck men's club with mahogany bookshelves and leather chairs." Kuralt is at his paper-strewn desk, with a steaming cup of coffee. His elbows rest on the desk-top, his fingers in that spider-doing- push-ups-on-a-mirror position. He wears half-glasses for reading.)
"When I was just a little boy, six years old or something like that, I had it in mind to be a reporter," he said. "I don't know where the notion came from. I had a much older cousin who was kind of enamored of the profession and always wished he had become one-maybe I absorbed this from him. Of course, television hadn't been invented yet, so what I had in mind was being a newspaper reporter."
