Toward the deserted end of the deserted Nebraska panhandle, an endless, yawning territory of tallgrass and strange animals, like a landscape from Carl Sandburg?s Rootabaga Stories , the town of Harrison appears like a patch of stubble on an imperfectly shaved cheek ? a garage, a few houses and a school ? the only town in one of the least populated counties in America. TV Poet: Charles Kuralt Bill Walsh, Contributing Writer
E-Mail: WillWalsh@aol.com Charles Kuralt has been "off the road" for a year and a half now, and I miss him. I know that it's perfectly common to say about anyone who retires that "there will never be another like him," but in the case of Charles Kuralt it's true no one will ever be able to fill his shoes or to do his job. Kuralt's "job" for 28 years was to drive the back roads of America in a CBS camper and report to us what he found there. What he found there was sometimes inspiring, sometimes charming, but always interesting and uniquely American. His series of "On the Road with Charles Kuralt" reports were like little pieces of ourselves. That alone made them special. But Kuralt would show us the America he found with such charm, such simplicity, and such sincerity that each story became almost like a little jewel (perhaps encrusted with the dust of a dirt road), but precious and priceless nonetheless. Kuralt was the Walt Whitman of American television, and he crafted a kind of video artistry that was about (and for) Everyman. In this he was (and he remains) unique. He caught ordinary people in the act of being themselves. Only it wasn't an act. Not on their part and not on his. His affection for the people he showed to us shines through each of his pieces. Charles Kuralt had a deep and an abiding respect for this country and the people in it and what they were doing, too. Often he would join in and "lend a hand" stirring the stew in a kitchen of a woman who turned her house into a haven for the hungry or chopping wood to help a New England farmer get ready for the winter.

Charles Kuralt as a high school senior, 1951 Charles Kuralt, a native of Wilmington, moved to Charlotte as a young boy when his father, Wallace Kuralt, became Director of the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. Kuralt, who died on July 4 th , is best remembered as a balding, corpulent, jolly-faced fellow who spoke with eloquence and grace as a reporter and anchorman for CBS Television. He began his journalism career in Ann Batten's 8th grade journalism class Charlotte's Alexander Graham Junior High School, North Carolina's first junior high school.
Alexander Graham Junior High School, at its former location on Morehead Street Kuralt came back to Charlotte in 1996 to speak at Alexander Graham Middle School's 75th Anniversary observances. Pictured below is Kuralt with Principal Ann Clark, who was excited to bring one of her heros to share his stories of the school's past with today's students. Few would recognize the handsome visage of the class historian in the 1951 Central High School annual. Yes, that too is Charles Kuralt. Perhaps the face is barely identifiable, but the language that he used in describing his days at Central High is vintage Kuralt. Here is some of what he wrote. He was seventeen years old.
