The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association released a white paper yesterday whimsically titled " Chicks and Joysticks: An Exploration of Women and Gaming This document includes a brief history of women in the computer and gaming industries along with current data providing a snapshot of the ways in which female players and female game industry employees affect the video games market. It's a UK-based report with a specific focus on the European and UK market.

The WGC, gender, and MMOGs
I’ve been a bit behind in some conference mentions I wanted to do but an article out by Katie Hafner gives me a good excuse to jump in with at least one. Her NYT piece touches on the Women’s Game Conference (which took place alongside the Austin Game Conference) and asks a few questions about the state of the industry and game design. It raises some of the issues that got discussed at the conference: what do women want in games, how can the industry get more women involved in development, what does it mean if we start considering women a serious part of the market, etc.

Like an Eighties Monica Potter she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong films, one breakthrough moment away from being a household name. Horror fans might know her work in Candyman and fantasy fans will have noticed she was in Highlander 2 as they were walking out. But to me she's Madeline in the prophetic Electric Dreams , breaking three hearts at the same time, Miles Harding, his computer and mine. Now here she is in the fantastic Sideways one nomination away from a statue. I think she's basically finally won hearts via a single speech she gives at the heart of the film in which her character Maya explains why she loves wine. I won't give away the details, but by the end you'll love wine and love her too.
But that's one of the great things about Sideways the chance to see actors I've whose work I loved for years, which no one else has heard of in something which everyone is talking about. I was afraid Paul Giamatti was going to end up being 'the guy from

One in four British women regularly play video games The makers of video games need to wake up to the fact that women like playing games, says a study.
A consultation paper on women in gaming, prepared for the UK games trade body Elspa, highlights how women are increasingly interested in video games. Traditionally, games have been aimed at men, but researcher Aleks Krotoski found that the situation is changing. "The technology has got to a point that the product that is being made is more interesting to women," she said. "More women than ever before are playing games." Spending power Women in the UK make up just over a quarter of the total number of gamers. This compares to 39% in the US and 69% in South Korea. The typical female gamer in the UK is 30 to 35-years-old, plays around seven hours a week and spends £170 (250 euros) a year on games, Ms Krotoski found.

Mobile gaming is set to become big business in the next year and the industry is hoping it will attract a different breed of gamers, women.
Aleks Krotoski gets 'very excited' about games While the games industry is churning out better, brighter games, mobile makers are coming out with more colour-screened handsets on which to play them. Both sides of the industry are hoping mobiles will drive more women to gaming because they are easy to use. But games makers still have to break some of the stereotypical ideas about which games will appeal to men and women, say experts. Better and brighter? Industry analysts suggest mobile gaming in the UK will be worth more than £50 million in 2003, with that figure rising to more than £211 million by 2006. With about 75% of the UK population owning a mobile, it is a big market to capture, says Julian Bright of Total Telecom magazine.

    Surrounded by Women!
As David Thomas noted , it feels a bit odd to be surrounded by so many women... While I sadly was not able to attend the Women's Game Conference , there is an overwhelming sense of women+games coverage in the press recently (from the BBC , to CNN and news on a new female scholarship , etc). Even the recent PBS documentary on games covered the topic of girls/games/etc, with two extended essays up at their web site (" Solving the Mystery of the Missing Girl Games " and " What Women Want Aleks Krotoski did a nice job of quickly chronicling the women's conference ( day 1 and day 2 ), and even provided a great executive summary of her ELSPA-sponsored report: " Chicks and Joysticks: An exploration of women and gaming All those positive comments/coverage aside, I did find Aleks' commentary of day 2, wherein she describes the close-mindedness of the male developers across the hall, quite sad. It is amazing to me how often people are blind to opportunity, or are so set in their ways that they can never dream of new horizons. It is that kind of myopic thinking that leads us to "exploiting" digital vixens and hearing one of the industry's founding fathers rant so heavily on the need for change.

Last week in China, Qui Chengwei, 41, was given a suspended death sentence for fatally stabbing someone in an altercation that was over a piece of property that didn't even exist.
Qui, who was tried in Shanghai, and his victim, Zhu Caoyuan, were players in the Chinese game Legend of Mir II - one of the world's 1,600 active massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs). They played with millions of paying subscribers in a virtual space set in a 24-hour real-time fantasy.
Like traditional console-based computer games, these feature goals to be achieved, bad guys to thwart and rewards to be reaped - but, unlike titles for the PlayStation 2, Xbox or GameCube, every on-screen character is played by a person logged in via the internet. In these virtual worlds, players team up to take on challenges, working off each others' strengths to solve the in-game conundrums.
That someone would pay £480 for something that doesn't exist in "meat space" is of increasing interest to economists, legal scholars, social scientists and philosophers. That someone would value it enough to kill another person interests just about everyone.

by mary @ 3:13 pm Where is the hard data about women in the games industry? In a 2004 New York Times article at E3, I wish to repost it as a reminder that the issue of gender and gaming runs deep and is multifaceted: a more
complex issue than simply the lack of women making games, or the representation of women in games, or how many women purchase games. In addition to these issues, more thinking needs to focus on the gender issues present in the construction of game architectures and game goals, and how games occupy our cultural imaginary.
Here are some papers on these issues:

    Thoughts on In-Game Celebrations
My friend and fellow writer Aleks Krotoski has a nice piece in the Guardian about in-game celebrations. She's an ex-pat, living the life in England, and as she says, virtual celebrations are a way for her to keep in touch with the American spirit. Her musings brought me back memories of what happened just after Sept. 11 and the state of games today I was on a treadmill on Sept. 11, and like everyone else in the gym, my eyes were glued to the television screen. The first plane had already crashed into one of the towers and then, right before our eyes, the second plane crashed. My fellow reporters and I immediately hopped off the machines, showered, and bolted to work. My first few days were spent on the phone with people in the federal government, trying to write columns about how the architecture of the Internet allowed terrorists to easily hide their communications. It was a miserable three days, maybe the worst I've had as a reporter. Soon enough, though, I moved back to my beat covering digital entertainment. It was then that I started getting messages about massive in-game vigils being held by players scattered around the world, who were abandoning their games for well, community time. Instead of slaying dragons or flying space ships, there were massive gatherings where people were just talking sharing stories, offering comfort, and connecting.

    Grand Theft Faces New Lawsuit
My friend Aleks Krotoski over at the Guardian Unlimited Gamesblog has a post about ambulance-chasing lawyer Jack Thompson and his latest attempt to link real world violence with video games. I am beside myself about Thompson's latest lawsuit, although I've been outspoken about his exploits in the past "You hear Sen. Joe Lieberman and Jack Thompson (a lawyer who sued the makers of Doom and Quake after a 1997 school shooting in Kentucky) talk about games and gamers, and you just know they're just taking somebody's thumbnail sketch of what they think is true." However, Krotoski brings up a very interesting point. While courts have generally fought back attempts to limit sales and game play, the contensious election could prove fertile ground for candidates hoping to score easy points by alluding to the declining social values represented in games like Grand Theft Auto Oct 12, 2004 at 08:22 AM by Brad King in

    Thumbs up for phone champs
John Scheerhout RINGERS: Barry Crossley gets the better of Aleks Krotoski HUNDREDS of people took part in the Manchester leg of the first world mobile phone games championships - and were told that the increasingly-popular games are good for old and young alike.
About 1500 people attended the event at The Trafford Centre, sponsored by Vodaphone, one of 10 similar events all over the country.
Those with the most alert reflexes and quickest thumbs won £700 and a mobile phone, and went on to the grand final, due to be held in London in October.
The mobile phone is said to be becoming the most played and most popular games platform, particularly because there are no barriers about who can play or where.
Craze Industry analysts reckon the mobile games market will be worth more than £50m this year and is likely to quadruple to £211m by 2006. Sales of ring tones are said to be outstripping music singles. The new craze appears to be mobile games, such as Pacman, Rayman 3 and Space Invaders.
The Trafford Centre event was hosted by Aleks Krotoski, the star of Channel Four's gaming show Bits and Thumb Bandits.
