@Once there was a man who created a huge Ninja sensation throughout the world. Born in Tokyo, Japan, he began his Martial Arts training at the age of 5 1/2 years old. By the time he reached 18, he held the prestigious title of All-Japan Karate Champion as well as many others. However in 1968, he left Japan to pursue his real dream which was to become an actor. After 8 determined years of doing stunt and extra work in films, he landed his 1st major role and there began his success story. He is the 1st and only Japanese actor to ever reach the prestigious plateau of "the billion dollar star." His name is Sho Kosugi. His Ninja success instantly spread worldwide. Within a matter of years, he played the leading roles in films such as: Enter the Ninja(1981), Revenge of the Ninja(1982), Ninja 3: The Domination (1983), Nine Deaths of the Ninja(1984), Pray for Death(1985), Rage of Honor (1986), Master Class(1985) and Ninja Theater(1986). The Ninja sensation was so big that when Pat Rod, of the Hollywood Reporter, was in countries like Greece and Turkey she said,"Movie enthusiasts there never asked me about Stallone, Cruise, or Harrison Ford; it was always,'Have you ever met Sho Kosugi?'" Although currently a retired Ninja in black himself, he continues to encourage others about his brand new style of Ninjas. We are even a little skeptical that the main character, Spike Shinobi (Sho Kosugi), is really a ninja. What kind of ninja wears bright green camouflage and sucks on lollipops? Made in the deepest, darkest part of the Eighties, Nine Deaths of the Ninja conforms to all the conventions of the foreign made, low-budget action thrillers that proliferated on the cinematic picnic like so many unwelcome ants. This formula, which probably exists in three-ring binder from on the shelves of many economically-minded action movie producers, was as well tread as that of the James Bond film, and even survives today in such Jeff Fahey vehicles as Operation Delta Force First of all, the film is required to have an ethnically diverse, testosterone-heavy team of good guys. They must have an allegedly cool code name: in this case they're the Dart Team. The team must always be summoned to do what they do best by a lot of jargon. Following the guidelines in the three-ring binder to the letter, an important-looking military guy calls out a "red option 4, NSD directive 138," which means: "put those three goofballs on a plane bound for the Philippines."

Director: Sam Firstenberg USA - 1984 work is somewhat limited. I think I remember reading somewhere that he was a master swordsman. I assume he was probably big back East, and it is also probable that Kosugi was never afforded the opportunity of making a significant mark in mainstream American cinema. That doesn’t mean Sho isn’t a skilled martial artist - it just goes to show that Americans, sadly, prefer the cinematic styling of Cynthia Rothrock, Jeff Speakman and Lorenzo Lamas as opposed to more talented performers such as Jet Li and Sammo Hung – those sad souls forced to play second-fiddle to the likes of Mel " Bird on a Wire " Gibson and Arsenio "Chunky A" Hall. It’s a damn shame, really. So, bottom line, I decided to give Mr. Kosugi a try. The film opens with a car parked on the side of the road in an undisclosed desert. A man gets out of said car and makes his way up a mountain into a secret cave. Once in the cave, he opens a stone sarcophagus revealing a hidden arsenal of Chinese stars, blow-guns, and those small, shiny, pointy projectiles of which to hurl towards the enemy at great velocity. (I seem to have misplaced my . Sorry). After donning some ninja duds and loading up on poisoned darts and nipple clamps (ok, maybe not nipple clamps), our mysterious assassin makes his way back down the mountain to a nearby golf course (?), where he then proceeds to off a "famous scientist" on the seventh green (or maybe it was the sixth?) along with several of his requisite henchmen. I don’t recall the killer’s rationale for this nefarious deed, nor do I remember why the scientist is necessarily famous, but in my defense, I don’t think the movie ever divulges this information - but really, who’s keeping
