Hogan's Heroes Voice of Beethoven
C ommunicating the depths of a score as concert pianist was the career for which he was trained. But giving voice to the heart of a script is how this rich-toned actor/ narrator/ interpreter found - and inspired - the greatest joy. W more L A is the place best designed to cause culture shock in anyone not from there. But for 15-yr.-old Werner, who was greeted at the station with his sister and mother by a chauffeur-driven limosine and whisked away to a home in Bel-Air, "it was like fairyland." more H e'd been told only that he'd be reading for the part of the commandant of a POW camp. Klemperer was stunned when he saw the script. Perhaps out of concern that this serious actor would reject such a part, no one had said anything about comedy. more B y the time Hogan's Heroes ended in 1971, Klemperer had made his mark so distinctively as to emerge forever from the shadow of his famous great conductor father. From now on, the cultural icon which would overshadow his career and by which he would be defined would be the one of his own creation: Colonel Wilhelm Klink. more If you have comments in praise of Mr. Klemperer or his work which you'd like to have included in an upcoming Tribute section, please

Werner Klemperer
This stuff is from the kooky : Mahatma Randy at Mahatmarandy@msn.com a far better expert on Mr. Klemperer than I shall ever be. Click here , dang it and look at his Hogan costume page. After he wrote this history of Mister Klemperer, someone wrote him about Klink. Mahatma said "Yeah, I got one E-mail from a guy who's mom had dated Werner Klemperer for a few years in WWII, when they were both USO entertainers. Werner had recently died, and his mom had revealed their affair to him. He was quite shocked, and was trying to find out anything he could about Werner, sort of as a present to his mom, to see if he ever thought about her, talked about her, whatever, in the 60 years since. He assumed from my article on your page that I knew more about him than I did. We talked a couple times, and he disappeared." So by reading that paragraph, its' like YOU have slept with Klink. I'm impressed! The first season (64/65) seems to mostly chronicle 1974/75, while the later seasons take place anywhere from '75 to 1980, in no particular chronological order. an episode in '80 could be followed by one in '76, for instance.

Mini-Biography Websites Credits e-Mail ... Other Links Mini-Biography Born - March 22, 1920 Died - December 6, 2000 Werner Klemperer was born in Cologne, Germany, on March 22, 1920. The son of renowned German-Jewish conductor Otto Klemperer, he and his father fled Germany after Hitler came to power in the 1930s. Ironically, many of Klemperer's acting roles were related to this history. Werner's Hollywood career began with bit roles in several films of the 1950s. By the late 1950s, he was acting on TV drama anthologies, including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." In 1961, he played a small role in the feature film "Judgment at Nuremberg," about the trial of Nazi war criminals. That same year, he had the title role in "Operation Eichmann," a film about the life and eventual capture of escaped Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann (future "Hogan's Heroes" co-star John Banner also appeared in that film). Werner's other films of the 1960s included "Escape From East Berlin" (1962), "Youngblood Hawke" (1964), and "Ship of Fools" (1965).

from http://www.latimes.com/news/state/20001208/t000117500.html Werner Klemperer, the character actor whose greatest success came in the role of Col. Klink, the German prison camp commandant of TV's "Hogan's Heroes," died Wednesday at his New York home after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 80. Klemperer won two Emmys for his portrayal of the inept but perversely likable Nazi in the show that was a first for television: a sitcom set in a German prisoner of war camp. The CBS series ran for six seasons, beginning in 1965. It still appears in reruns around the world, including Germany where it is a cult hit.

Werner Klemperer
An actor, Klemperer is best known as the bumbling camp commandant Colonel Wilhelm Klink from the Hogan's Heroes TV show. Klemperer brought an interesting background to his part: a Jew, he and his family fled Germany just as Hitler came to power. The 1960s show, which is still a cult hit (even in Germany), poked exquisite fun at Germany's World War II machine and won Klemperer two Emmy awards. Klink's ineptitude was in large part his own idea. "He insisted in all the shows that he come out as the loser," said his longtime publicist, Bernie Ilson. "He was sensitive about that. He was worried that the commandant would come out as a winner." He died December 6 at home in New York from cancer. He was 80.
