RELATED STORIES, SITES LEWISTON, Maine (CNN) His body may be broken, but the mind is as warped as ever. Which means the brain that created best sellers like "Carrie," "The Shining," and "Pet Sematary" is intact, Stephen King's office said Monday. King, who was to undergo surgery Monday, faces major rehabilitation over the next year. In addition to fractures of his right leg, King suffered a broken hip, a collapsed lung and a cut on his scalp. His office took care to note that his serious injuries were from the shoulders down.

[ST STEPHEN] (977-1038), king of Hungary, was the son of Geza, duke of Hungary, and of Sarolta, one of the few Magyar Christian ladies, who obtained the best teachers for her infant son. These preceptors included the German priest Bruno, the Czech priest Radla, and an Italian knight, Theodate of San Severino, who taught him arms and letters (a holograph epistle by Stephen existed in the Vatican Library as late as 1513). In 996 Stephen married Gisela, the daughter of Duke Henry II. of Bavaria, and in the following year his father died and the young prince was suddenly confronted by a formidable pagan reaction under Kupa in the districts between the Drave and Lake Balaton. Stephen hastened against the rebels, bearing before him the banner of St Martin of Tours, whom he now chose to be his patron saint, and routed the rebels at Veszprem (998), a victory from which the foundation of the Hungarian monarchy must be dated, for Stephen assumed the royal title immediately afterwards. Reflections on Stephen King
Stephen King is writing again
July 28, 1999
Web posted at: 3:05 p.m. EDT (1905 GMT)
(CNN) Horror writer Stephen King is writing again, but his time at the keyboard is limited by his injuries and rehabilitation schedule. King was hit by a minivan June 19 as he walked beside a two-lane country road near his vacation home in North Lovell, Maine. He suffered several broken bones and a collapsed lung. The writer had five operations to repair his injuries. In a statement on the Stephen King Web site, King's wife, writer Tabitha King, said her husband was using a laptop computer and writing for about an hour-and-a-half each day. She said his writing time is limited because he is unable to sit for long periods because of injuries to his pelvic bones. King also spends time in physical therapy. In the third person, King wrote, "SK continues to work hard at his physical rehabilitation. He spends more time out of bed every day, using a walker or wheelchair."

Master of horror fiction
RELATED STORIES, SITES LEWISTON, Maine (CNN) Author Stephen King was recovering from about seven hours of surgery Monday to repair his shattered leg and hip injuries suffered when he was struck by a minivan over the weekend. "Everything went fine," said Dr. David Brown, the orthopedic trauma surgeon performing the operation. "It took longer than I like but I'm slow and meticulous because I like to get things done right." He said King remains in serious but stable condition and that his vital signs "all look good." He said the author, known for such macabre horror stories as "The Shining" and "Carrie," was groggy but alert with his family. His wife, three children and brother were on hand for the surgery that began around 3:30 p.m. and ended at about 10:30 p.m.

King, Stephen
  • The Stand (9 r)
    • King's most ambitious work...this was probably the most successful of the novels in terms of how it translated to the screen. A very engaging story about the U. S. swept by a virulent plague that wipes out just about everyone except a few thousand good people and evil people. Yes, it's melodramatic. Yes, King can be really corny. I still read it twice.
  • The Tommyknockers (7 r)
    • Another long novel about a spaceship that is discovered outside a small Maine (where else?) town and the effects it has on everyone. A little slow in developing, but this has several great short stories buried in it somewhere. The whole thing is put together fairly well, and I would recommend it.
  • It (9 r)
    • This is a story about seven people who are reunited to face a monstrous terror that has returned to stalk a small (guess which state?) town that it stalked when the seven were all children. Some of the subplots of the seven are a little pedantic, but the whole in this case is much greater than the sum of its parts. It has some of the scariest scenes I've read, but they're still pretty tame (and I NEVER watch horror movies). Definitely recommended.
  • The Talisman (with Peter Straub) (5 r)
    • This is set in a world that has a parallel world to our own, and a child finds that he passes between the two worlds now and then. In order to stop a great evil, he must transport a talisman across the country through all kinds of dangers. Readable pulp, perhaps a bit above average.
