Interview with Lorna Jean King, OTR, FAOTA
Lorna Jean King (LJK) is one of the pioneers of sensory integration therapy. Ms. LJK is an international lecturer on this topic, and is the Founder and Director of the Center for Neurodevelopmental Studies, Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona. This interview was conducted by Stephen M. Edelson (SE) on June 9, l996. SE: How did you get involved in the area of sensory integration as well as autism? LJK: My interest in sensory integration started when I was the Director of Rehabilitation at Arizona State Hospital. I was very interested in the literature which indicated that the vestibular system seemed to be involved in schizophrenia; that is, many schizophrenics do not have normal responses to vestibular stimulation. They have little or no post-rotary nystagmus. SE: Does this apply to those with childhood schizophrenia, since autism was, at one time, confused with schizophrenia; or does this apply to schizophrenia in general. LJK: It seems to apply to what is termed "negative symptom" schizophrenia, or early onset schizophrenia, but not always to childhood schizophrenia. There have been many research studies over the years showing involvement of the vestibular system in schizophrenia. I knew that Dr. Jean Ayres, whom I had known earlier, was working on the vestibular system which was involved in her sensory integration theory. We began using sensory integrative treatment with chronic schizophrenics and had quite marked success in improving their ability to function. We also had a children's unit at the State Hospital which housed several autistic children. Since we had an opportunity to work with them, we used sensory integration therapy with them and also had some very encouraging results.

Using the Danish miniseries "Riget" (a.k.a. "The Kingdom") as a point of inspiration, master of horror Stephen King gives Kingdom Hospital a unique and menacing American touch. Kingdom is a hospital whose bizarre population includes a brilliant surgeon who lives in the basement, a nearly blind security guard and a nurse who regularly faints at the sight of blood. Stephen King ready to close book as writer?
Stephen King, shown holding "a friend" in a 1994 photo, has a new miniseries, "Rose Red," doing well in the ratings for ABC. (CNN) Is Stephen King hanging it up? The prolific King of Horror said as much in an interview in Sunday's Los Angeles Times. After he publishes five more books, two of which already are scheduled for 2002 including a collection of short stories as well as work on a limited series for ABC, he's ending his career in publishing, he said. "Then that's it. I'm done. Done writing books," he told the Times' Kim Murphy. Why? he was asked. "You get to a point where you get to the edges of a room, and you can go back and go where you've been and basically recycle stuff," he said. Referring to the novel "From a Buick Eight," scheduled for release in the fall, he noted, "I've seen it in my own work. People when they read 'Buick Eight' are going to think 'Christine.' It's about a car that's not normal, OK?"

    Author: King, Stephen
    Date and Place of birth:
    b. Sept. 21, 1947, Portland, U.S. Life and Works:
American writer, whose horror and fantasy tales enjoy tremendous popular success. Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine the 21th September, 1947. His father, a merchant seaman, deserted the family in 1950. The young Stephen and his brother David were raised in Durham, Maine, by their mother who worked in odd jobs to support her children. King wrote his first story at the age of 7 and sold his first piece of writing to a magazine when he was 18 years old He writes horror stories influenced by the 19th-century Gothic tradition, especially that of Edgar Allan Poe . His novels, short stories, screenplays, and essays have made him one of the best-selling authors in the world. King takes everyday situations and experiences and reveals their macabre and horrific potential. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1970, King continued to write while working a variety of laborer-type jobs, and getting a job teaching English at Hampden academy. Marriage to his college sweetheart, Tabitha Spruce, and the birth of their first child occurred in 1971. And still he wrote. He made second tier short story sales to what are politely known as "men's magazines" (and impolitely known as "strokebooks") which, he fondly recalls, would provide money which would arrive just in time to pay for a doctor's visit or a new set of children's clothes. And he kept on writing, and amassing rejection slips for short stories and novels.
