On May 25, 1775, upon news of the clashes at Lexington-Concord, its president departed New York City just ahead of a mob bent upon doing him mortal harm for his Tory sentiments and pamphleteering efforts on behalf of the Crown. Of the College's seven faculty members (inclusive of the medical faculty), five aligned with England and against the revolution. Only the frequent butt of student escapades, Tutor Robert Harpur, became a vigorous patriot. Among the Governors, for every one who sided with the Revolution, five became Loyalists. Of the 150 King's College students whose revolutionary politics have been identified, for every Patriot there were at least three Loyalists. But on other issues that angered colonists elsewhere, such as the placement of British troops in the colonies and the threat of a resident Anglican bishop posed to the dissenting religious denominations that were in the majority in several colonies, the Anglican mercantile and landowning elite of New York had no quarrel. Unlike Bostonians, for example, New Yorkers had long accommodated a substantial military presence, and assured British army officers a favored place in the City's social activities. Several of His Majesty's finest, for example, had married into King's College families. Similarly, New York's Anglicans were determined that if the colonies were to have a bishop, his seat should be in New York.

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine General Information
History Chartered in 1886 as the Western Pennsylvania Medical College, a fee-standing school formed by local physicians, the School of Medicine sought university affiliation even in the early years of operations. In 1891 the School became affiliated with the Western University of Pennsylvania and, two decades later, was integrated into the newly designated University of Pittsburgh. Abraham Flexner, a renowned educator, published his first report, Medical Eductation in the U.S. and Canada, in 1910 after he had visited 155 medical schools, including the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The Flexner Report, in effect, removed medical education from the apprenticeship era and laid the foundations for the integrated academic basic science and clinical curricula of today. In this first report, Flexner made the following comments relative to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine: Since the present management took hold last fall, the admission of students has been more carefully supervised, the building has been put in excellent condition.... Whole-time instructors of modern training and ideals have been secured... A new building is in the process of erection...
