Jennie Maas Flexner
by Seymour "Sy" Brody For the last twenty years of her life, Jennie Maas Flexner was the readers' adviser at the New York City Public Library and author of many books on the library and librarians. She was born on November 6, 1882, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Rosa and Jacob Aaron Flexner. The Flexners were a distinguished family in many areas of life in America. Her uncles were Simon Flexner, the eminent bacteriologist, Abraham Flexner, known for his studies and surveys of medical colleges and higher education in the United States, and Bernard Flexner, a noted attorney. Her sisters were Hortense Flexner King, a poet and a teacher at Bryn Mawr and Sarah Lawrence Colleges, and Caroline Flexner who was with UNRRA in Washington, D.C. Her father was a pharmacist and then a physician. Jennie Flexner never finished college. She joined the staff of the Free Public Library of Louisville as a secretary, 1903-04, and then became a member of the library professional staff. She served as head of the circulation department from 1912 to 1928. Flexner was a strong advocate of the newly developing library concept of a reader-centered philosophy as against the older book-centered one. She was soon in the forefront of writing and talking about this new concept. In Louisville, she was an advocate of service to the black community and the training of black and white librarians.

Determining the Facts
Reading 1: The King of Prussia Inn
When William Rees, Sr. died in 1756, his estate passed to his son, William, Jr. Unlike his father, the younger William Rees was not interested in agriculture. He rented out his farmland and began a tavern business in 1769, having constructed a large new stone addition to his parent's farmhouse. William, Jr. was actively involved in running the inn for only three years, after which he turned his tavern license over to someone else. Rees died in April 1776, leaving his family in considerable debt. By 1770, the place was referred to as “the Sign of Charles Frederick Augustus, King of Prussia.” There are several stories about how the inn received its name. One story said that the name was in reference to Frederick the Great of Prussia who assisted the British in defeating the French in the Seven Years War (known as the French and Indian War in North America). Another story said the inn was named for King Frederick the Great for his support of George Washington during the American Revolution. A third account states that a sign was hung outside the tavern honoring the German king to attract the German contingent participating in the American Revolution. Over the years, there has been considerable speculation about the role of the inn during the American Revolution, particularly during the Valley Forge encampment. In September 1777, Sir William Howe and 15,000 British troops invaded Pennsylvania and quickly captured Philadelphia after defeating George Washington's army at the Battle of Brandywine. That winter, the Continental Army went into camp at Valley Forge, which was very close to the King of Prussia Inn. According to James Thomas Flexner, in his biography on George Washington, he made the decision to move his troops at an inn about a mile from Valley Forge.

The Sutton Island Cemetery is a small plot situated in the middle of the island. When you land at the Town Dock (don't miss the smallest "Post Office" in the world , Zip 04662) follow the boardwalk path straight back over the beach stones, through the grass field, up the hill via the wheelbarrow ramp, past the Town Road, and then another 300 feet or so until you see the cemetery on the left.
    Grave Site Layout
    To "stroll through" the cemetery:
    1. click on a stone to see the inscription 2. click your browser's "Back" button to return here to the cemetery
The original cemetery, dominated by the metal Fernald obelisk , is roughly rectangular in shape, about 25 feet north-south and 21 feet east-west. It is surrounded by a heavy chain fence held up by ten stone posts as shown in the grave site layout above. Within the chained-in area there is a smaller, slightly-raised area 8.5' north-south by 10' east-west which is formed by a stone border filled with earth. There are two stones and two footstones in this raised area. Other than those, there are two stones, two footstones, and one obelisk in the chained-in area. The cemetery has been expanded by later burials outside the chained-in area. There are nine stones, two footstones, and two minor stones to the south of the chained-in area, and three stones to the north of it.
