February 14, 2002 Institute for Neurosciences at Northern Westchester Hospital dedicates operative suite and launches art gallery
On Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2002, The Institute for Neurosciences at Northern Westchester Hospital dedicated an operative suite in honor of a local donor and opened a new art gallery, which will serve to enhance the atmosphere of healing, compassion and beauty for all patients, family members and visitors to the 14 bed inpatient neurosurgical/orthopedic unit.
The Institute for Neurosciences was the first of its kind in the area to open a Center for Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, integrating a variety of technological advancements including a cross hair microscope, intra-operative CT scanner and frameless navigational system. The surgical team can use the equipment to image the surgical area prior to finishing the case, thereby insuring the accuracy and thoroughness of the surgery. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, decreased trauma to the surgical area and accelerated recovery. The Institute has also recently expanded its services to offer complementary therapies to patients, such as Reiki, Aromatherapy and Massage, as part of the hospital’s effort to broaden wellness and healing offerings.

In "Oxen" London, the political and financial metropolis serves as a synecdoche for the empire: London seems to be hovering over the episode. Ulysses Ulysses is the book that "showed up the futility of all the English styles" and "destroyed the whole of the 19th century" (Brooker, 2004: 44). Ulysses is composed of 18 episodes, each of them defined by its own monumental style. The "Oxen of the Sun" episode is built up of thirty-one segments that Joyce wrote by employing and simultaneously distorting the strategies of significant writers in English prose. In order to achieve such a tour de force , Joyce mainly drew on two anthologies: The English Prose: From Mandeville to Ruskin by William Peacock, Home Office , first published in 1903 and The Anthology of English Prose Rhythm by George Saintsbury, first published in 1912.

Eve Ensler and "The Vagina Monologues" Eve Ensler's groundbreaking show.. is a series of sly, lyrical, incisive first-person vignettes,
most of them hilarious, some heartbreaking, all of them illuminating women's lives. It was on Eve's
first national tour that The Vagina Monologues turned from a play into a crusade. "So many women came up to talk to me about having been beaten and raped and incested that I started to feel
I was going to have a breakdown," Ensler says. "I made a decision that I was going to figure out my purpose,
my mission. And one day the answer rose up: 'Stop. Violence. Toward. Women.' From that moment on, my life has been completely and utterly clear." In 1997, Ensler gathered a group of friends and asked them to help her figure out a way to use The Vagina Monologues to end violence toward women.

Romantic Ireland
is
Dead and Gone
The English-speaking Republic as the crucible of modernity

The author argues that Ireland has been consciously on the road to modernity ever since the Famine. First choosing to dump the gaelic language, the Irish went on, long before other countries followed suit, to confront the empire, declare a republic, create a national education system, and make the first radio broadcast in the world of a sporting event. Today, that modernisation process has taken a new turn with the rejection of the Catholic Church and the success of the economy.
By Decland Kiberd The truth is that the old Ireland always existed more in Hollywood than in Hackball's Cross. O n the immaculately painted wall of my local pub, in navy-blue ink written in a neat copperplate hand, appears a tiny graffito: "Ulster is British – Let's keep it that way". Dubliners are born parodists, and northern Unionists are so easy to mimic. Right now, not even the house-proud publican would want to wipe the line away. Besides, he may privately agree with the sentiment. Not everybody in the Republic, which is currently enjoying unprecedented affluence, wants to assume full political and fiscal responsibility for the war-scarred battle-weary North. The 'unfinished business' of reunification may have to wait for a few more decades. These days, the business of the Republic is business. Ten years ago, the novelist William Trevor was interviewed on BBC television. He was asked to contrast the Ireland in which he grew up with the England in which he very happily lived. He surprised his interviewer by remarking that whenever he returned to England, he was overwhelmed by the sense of its majestic past, "but when I get out at Dublin Airport I always think that this place isn't finished yet. It still has an open future and I would love to be around in a few years time to see how it all turns out."

THE LEFT COAST REPORT
A Political Look at Hollywood
"The West Wing," NBC's attempt to portray life at the White House, has quite a season finale planned. Apparently, New Hampshire Democrat Josiah Bartlet, a liberal's dream character played by Martin Sheen
, is going to have a GOP opponent. Barbra Streisand may not be able to stomach the show, though. Sources indicate that husband James Brolin has been cast to play Bob Ritchie, a Republican candidate. NBC's website for the show describes Sheen's character as having "a country-lawyer charisma that belies his brilliance." This should mean that, for balance, Bob Ritchie is going to be a thinking conservative with some depth of character. But if the show stays true to form, viewers shouldn't hold their breath. Brolin isn't going to need any coaching from Babs on how to "best" portray a Republican. Along with his wife, he's an avid supporter of Democrats. In fact, he has given contributions to some high-profile candidates. The Left Coast Report doesn't see it as a coincidence that writers of "The West Wing" gave the name "Bob Ritchie" to the GOP candidate. "Bob Poorman" just wouldn't plant the same seeds of class envy.

It also rewards attention to the small detail, and to quotidian experience. Readers have found the novel to be both demanding and remarkably open to interpretation. As such it is an ideal occasion for demonstrating the pleasures of literary research. In this course we will explore the single extraordinary novel from multiple critical perspectives. Writing assignments will emphasize research skills to prepare you for English 403-404. Written work: Students will write two 8-10 page papers and a 15-page research paper, each accommodating a different set of methods and questions. The last paper must demonstrate sophistication and depth in research skills

Review of:
Declan Kiberd, Inventing Ireland . Cambridge: Harvard University Press. 653 pgs. $35.
  • When W.B. Yeats asks "Did that play of mine send out / Certain men the English shot?" in his 1938 poem "The Man and the Echo," he is reflecting on his part in a cultural revolution which came to an unambiguous fruition in the Easter Rising of 1916. Fifty years later the contemporary poet Paul Muldoon responds to Yeats's famous line with the cynicism: "If Yeats had saved his pencil-lead / would certain men have stayed in bed?" ( Selected Poems , 134). This debate over the role of the art and the artist in society is central to many contemporary postcolonial societies. In Inventing Ireland , Declan Kiberd attempts to comprehend the distance from Yeats's romantic nationalism to Muldoon's postmodern irony by tracing the affinitive relationship Ireland has with other postcolonial countries who have felt the vicissitudes of political independence. As part of the Converges series edited by Edward Said
