It would be difficult to argue that any artist has produced work of a consistently higher quality over the past dozen years than Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. We ought to be grateful. Artistic continuity should not be taken for granted. Egalement poète, un de ses recueils est traduit en français et publié depuis 2001 chez POL. La galerie de France expose en ce moment un ensemble de ses photographies en noir et blanc, des clichés de paysages sous la neige. Durant les années de la Révolution, alors que son travail de cinéaste se voyait empêché par la censure, Kiarostami se procura un appareil photo et ressentit le besoin de se rapprocher de la nature. Aucun titre, ni date ne sont jamais précisés, comme si l’artiste voulait éloigner ses photographies de toute forme de contingence. La neige finit d’ensevelir les derniers indices d’un lieu précis. Les paysages photographiés ne font l’objet d’aucune mise en scène, mais procèdent d’une observation patiente et attentive de la nature. Un envol d’oiseaux au dessus d’une chaîne de montagnes, un cheval noir traversant une étendue de neige immaculée ou le passage d’un chien sauvage, autant d’événements qui apparaissent à Kiarostami durant ses promenades et dont il réalise les prises de vue. On sent le regard du cinéaste, anticipant habilement la progression des mouvements dans le cadre.

Ces photographies font ainsi du paysage une variation d’espaces sur le vide et le plein. Vues panoramiques où les lignes d’ombres font des ombres d’une densité égale à celle des formes, plans serrés où les empreintes font parler les textures de la neige : ces photographies sont faussement graphiques. Les lignes tirent leur rayonnement de la neige, et la richesse de cette blancheur, cotonneuse, scintillante ou ombrée, se révèle réservoir d’énergie, pure latence, épaisseur de lumière. L’expression épurée de Kiarostami évoque la "fadeur" des peintres et calligraphes de la Chine ancienne qui pensaient la lente et diffuse propagation de l’énergie du monde, à la fois rythme cosmique et souffle vital de toute chose. "Fadeur" comme saveur limite par sa délicatesse, saveur au bord du sensible.
