Jerome Kern: 1885-1945
by Joel Bernstein Jerome David Kern (born January 27, 1885, New York, New York., Died November 11, 1945, New York, N. Y.) American Composer. First hit, "How'd You Like To Spoon With Me", 1905. Composed nearly 700 songs for 117 shows and films between 1905 and 1945. Those are the bare bones-the statistics that cover the career of one of America's great composers of popular song. But the numbers can never sum up the contribution that Jerome Kern made to the American musical style. For Kern's romance with the musical theatre and film was to produce something new, a type of song unlike any theatre music before it. When Jerome Kern started writing and plugging his songs at the turn of the century the majority of American Theatre music was strongly influenced by the European, or "Viennese" style. Victor Herbert was the master of this kind of writing. Kern's songs, on the other hand, used a fresh, uncontrolled approach to melody which was to modernize the American musical theatre. That's not to say that Kern's music was simple. On the contrary, he was always developing, always experimenting but there were always, as Alec Wilder has said, "those melodies, straight and healthy, and ever green." Jerome Kern moved quickly from a rehearsal pianist and Tin Pan Alley song plugger to a writer whose music, by 1915, was represented in as many as seven or eight Broadway shows a season! Melody seemed to pour out of him and he was known to compose whole scores in a weeks time.

http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm32.html
Show Boat Music: Jerome Kern Perhaps the most influential musical of the twentieth century, Show Boat combined the talents of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, both of whom had felt for some time that Broadway musical theatre was suffering from a lack of depth and needed to steer away from the fluffy musical comedies and melodramatic operetta that it was accustomed to. After choosing for their subject Edna Ferber's sprawling novel of life on the Mississippi, Kern and Hammerstein set out to deal with issues such as unhappy marriages and racial prejudice. The story, which spans almost fifty years, deals primarily with the fortunes of an impressionable young woman named Magnolia Hawks, her father who owns a show boat named the Cotton Blossom , and a troubled riverboat gambler/actor named Gaylord Ravenal. Magnolia and Gaylord fall in love while acting on the showboat and eventually marry and move to Chicago. They separate, however, after Gaylord loses all of their money gambling. The subplot involves Magnolia's mulatto friend, the tragic Julie La Verne. Show Boat opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 27, 1927 and ran for 572 performances. It has been revived numerous timesmost successfully by Hal Prince in 1994and spawned several film versions including the 1936 film with Irene Dunne and the 1951 version with Ava Gardner and Howard Keel. The original cast included Charles Winninger, Norma Terris, Howard Marsh and Helen Morgan.

SHOW BOAT
Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music The Movie (DVD) The Movie (VHS)
Book and Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II Music by JEROME KERN Staged by Based on the novel by EDNA FERBER
First produced at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 27, 1927, with Norma Terris as "Magnolia", Howard Marsh as "Gaylord" and Helen Morgan as "Julie".
T HE "Cotton Blossom", a show boat travelling up and down the Mississippi River in or about 1890, has come to Natchez. Stevedores are hard at work on the levee, while the gay crowds have come to welcome the arrival of the show folks ("Cotton Blossom"). Gaylord Ravenal, a dashing young man who is also an irresponsible gambler, meets Magnolia aboard ship. She is the daughter of Cap'n Andy, owner of "Cotton Blossom". She soon reveals to Gaylord that, since she is most at ease in the world of make believe, she would like to become an actress. Gaylord counters by inquiring why the two of them cannot make believe that they know each other well ("Only Make Believe"). After Gaylord leaves, Magnolia asks Joe what he thinks of Gaylord. Joe prefers to be evasive: he advises Magnolia to direct her question to the Mississippi, which knows all the answers ("Ol' Man River"). A half hour later, in the kitchen pantry of "Cotton Blossom", Magnolia confesses to Julie star of the Show Boat that she has just fallen in love. Julie warns Magnolia to be careful about falling in love, that love is a treacherous thing, that a girl must be sure that the man she loves is worthy of her ("Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man").
