DeForest Kelley, 'Bones' on 'Star Trek,' dies at 79
LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor DeForest Kelley, who as crusty Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy on "Star Trek" brought a country flavor to outer space, died Friday. He was 79. Kelley died after an extended illness, said Carol Pfannkuche, spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital, a retirement facility, in suburban Woodland Hills. "He represented humanity and it fitted him well," said Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock on the science fiction series. "He was a decent, loving, caring partner and will be deeply missed." The conflict between McCoy's all-too-human character and Spock's cold logic provided grist for many of the series' lighthearted moments. Kelley reprised his Dr. McCoy role in six "Star Trek" films.

DeForest Kelley, who, as Star Trek's folksy spaceman Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, frequently issued the dire (and trademark) "He's dead, Jim" diagnosis, died today at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He was 79. Kelley was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Longtime friend and producer A.C. Lyles told reporters the star had been confined to the hospital for three months, suffering from a "lingering illness." Kelley is the first major member of the USS Enterprise's original on-air crew to pass away. Franchise creator Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. Actor Mark Lenard, a familiar face in the series and movies as Mr. Spock's Vulcan father, died in 1996. With William Shatner's Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, Kelley's Bones McCoy formed the original Trek's holy troika. They were the three guys who got the biggest storylines, the best billing, the most money and the clearest shots at post-Trek careers.

DeForest Kelley, 1920-1999
Actor DeForest Kelley, best known to fans around the world for his portrayal of "Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy" in the "Star Trek" television series and spin-off films, died June 11, 1999 after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. Kelley, whose film credits included more than 35 motion pictures and 60 television series appearances, (excluding "Star Trek") was 79 years old. Born on January 20th, 1920 at his family's Atlanta Georgia home (he was delivered by an uncle who was a physician) Jackson DeForest Kelley was the son of devout Southern Baptists. Kelley's father, Rev. Ernest D. Kelley headed his own parish, and his mother, Clara Casey Kelley coordinated the church choir, which ultimately gave DeForest Kelley his first performing experience. Kelley originally aspired as a child to be a doctor, but that youthful ambition was shelved after Kelley's singing talents took him to live performances on Atlanta radio. Local radio led to an engagement fronting the Lew Forbes Orchestra at the Paramount Theater, and Kelley was determined to be an entertainer. Though the war had interrupted Kelley's personal and professional pursuits, it ultimately furthered his career. A paramount Pictures talent scout happened to see Kelley in the Navy industrial, offering him a 3-year contract, which started with a starring role in the 1947 release "Fear In The Night". Kelley soon found himself a busy character actor, cast primarily as "a black hat" in westerns or as heavy handed villains: An interesting turn for the minister's son who began his career as a choirboy and grew prize roses as a hobby. Kelley had appeared in well-known television series from "Bonanza" to "Route 66" and films including "

Jackson DeForest Kelley was delivered at home in Atlanta, Georgia by his uncle, a prominent local physician. Kelley lived all over the South as the son of Clara Casey Kelley and Rev. Ernest D. Kelley, a Baptist minister. After singing in the church choir, Kelley discovered that he enjoyed singing and was good at it. Eventually this led to solos and later performing on radio station WSB in Atlanta. As a result of his radio appearances, he won an engagement with Lew Forbes and his orchestra at the Paramount Theater. It was Kelley's first taste of being an entertainer, and he liked it. Kelley moved to Long Beach, California after he had saved enough money working as an usher in a local theater to live with his uncle. Kelley found that he loved the sun, surf and excitement of Long Beach and told his parents he was going to stay and get a job. Mopping floors soon gave way to operating an elevator in a hotel near the ocean. One day, Kelley was sitting in a restaurant when Rohn Hawke, who was doing local theater, came over and asked if he had any acting experience. Hawke worked with him to smooth out his Georgia accent, wanting Kelley to appear in a play he was directing. He auditioned and won the part. During the run of the play, a talent scout caught his performance and felt he had a future in acting. In the evenings, Kelley continued to appear with the Long Beach Theater Group to gain experience, while operating an elevator and 'roughnecking' for Richfield Oil during the day. Sometime later, Kelley and some friends from the group started writing and staging plays at a local radio station. This led to other radio work for him.

DEFOREST KELLEY Actor Kelley had one of those lightning-struck showbiz careers. After nearly two decades in supporting roles in westerns and B-movies, he joined the original cast of the TV show Star Trek in 1966. (Kelley was part of the show's lead trio along with William 'Kirk' Shatner and Leonard 'Spock' Nimoy .) When the show became a cult favorite and then a pop culture phenomenon, Kelley was identified with the role for life. As McCoy he was known for his good-hearted grouchiness and for his dependable DOA pronouncement, "He's dead, Jim."
