"I was naked..." It was late December 1971 and a prim and pert young blonde named Abigail was in a long queue at the North Sydney offices of TV Producers Cash Harmon. Out of work and desperate, the pretty, English-born young actress was at the casting session for a new series to be set in a block of flats.
"I was pretty nervous - which is unlike me - when I walked into Bill Harmon's office but he was such a dear man. He put me straight at ease. I read the part of Bev for him and he told me to report to the TEN studios at North Ryde for a screen test. I was over the moon. The next day he told me I was in."
An overjoyed Abigail and her lover-manager Mark Hashfield celebrated with a bottle of Bodega. After "Number 96" hit the screens Abigail quickly emerged as Australia's hottest new star with her delicate blond beauty and teasing portrayal of the scantily-clad virginal sex-kitten.

Objectives: To investigate whether apparently beneficial changes in plasma HIV RNA level and CD4 lymphocyte count that are induced by antiretroviral therapy are associated with a corresponding clinical benefit. Methods: For 620 patients in two randomized, double-blind trials of lamivudine (3TC) and zidovudine (ZDV) plasma HIV RNA and CD4 lymphocyte count changes were compared in patients randomized to 3TC plus ZDV and patients randomized to other treatment arms. The effect of therapy on the HIV RNA level and CD4 count was compared with the effect of therapy on clinical endpoints over the same time period. Results: Median baseline values for all subjects were 42 420 copies/ml for HIV RNA and 277 x 106/l for CD4 count. During the trial a significantly lower HIV RNA level and higher CD4 count was sustained in the ZDV/3TC group compared with the other group, with a difference in the median area under the curve from baseline per month of follow-up of 0.38 log10 copies/ml HIV RNA and 0.18 log2 x 106/l CD4 cells (P

The slow approach to the Port of Kodiak, Alaska, on July 3 was surreal. Seas were calm and glassy, skies were clear, and steep, green peaked cliffs came into view as we made our way towards Kodiak Island. We watched as a thin layer of fog moved its way through the snowy valleys of Barometer and Pyramid Mountains, knowing full-well that this spectacular weather was a rare gift in a region that is typically blanketed in fog. Puffins buzzed the bow of the ship, and as we neared the Port, we could see Bald Eagles circling overhead. The scene was picture perfect—a "Kodiak" moment, as it was referred to by Sue Doenges.
We arrived in the Port of Kodiak at about 10:00 am, and immediately began to set up for invitational tours of the R/V Atlantis and deep-sea submersible Alvin that were scheduled to begin at 11:00 am. Flags, banners and posters were hung around the labs and the deck of the ship, space was cleared around the live crab tank, and the

    High-Handed Howell meme gains steam!
    By Mickey Kaus
Updated Monday, May 12, 2003, at 2:43 AM PT
Blair update: It's all about prepping Howell! "Heads should roll," says a NYT staffer., according to the N.Y. Post . How is Sulzberger going to roll his own head? Maybe there are instructions on the Web somewhere. ... But the Post emphasizes the "Raines high-handedness" factor as the theme of staff disaffectiona theme that gets Sulzberger off the hook more than the "affirmative action" explanation, which is why it's much more dangerous to Raines. ... Bill Keller (runner-up to Raines for the executive editor's job) is looking better and better , isn't he? He's sitting there on the bench, presumably ready to play. Maybe the fourth quarter belongs to him Update: Raines has formed a task force, the "Siegal Committee," and also plans a fast-track version of the process that was so helpful to me during the months before I became executive editor. At that time, I met with many groups of editors, reporters, photographers, designers, artists and researchers. ...

    HYPOCRITES OF “TORT REFORM”
    PRINT THIS PAGE
    E-MAIL THIS ARTICLE
    By Emily Gottlieb

    INTRODUCTION
No one likes a hypocrite. Yet one would be hard pressed to find more hypocrites than in the “tort reform” movement. Take a look at the record of a host of lawmakers, lobbyists and even journalists who complain about lawsuits and argue that the rights of injured consumers to go to court should be scaled back because we are too “litigious.” Yet when they or family members are hurt and need compensation for their own injuries, often minor ones, these same individuals do not hesitate to use the courts to obtain compensation, to right a wrong, to hold a wrongdoer accountable or to obtain justice. The same is true for corporations that have funded the “tort reform” movement. These companies support efforts to immunize themselves from liability for harming consumers. But when these same companies believe they have been wronged by a business competitor, they are the first to sue. In this report we take a look at the cases of several proponents of tort restrictions who do not “practice what they preach.” We examine individuals who have sued sometimes for millions of dollars while at the same time championing damage caps and other severe liability restrictions for others. We also look at corporate litigants who have lent financial or other support to groups like the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA), the Manhattan Institute and state business coalitions like New Yorkers for Civil Justice Reform (NYCJR).
