At the conclusion of the program, Mr. Kazan gave this timeless talk to students. This is the traditional instant for me to thank all of you who have helped mount this retrospective. It was not easy. Along the way he has engaged in a long and bitter debate with other figures from the theater, the playwrights Arthur Miller and Lillian Hellman conspicuous among them, ever since that day in 1952 when he identified eight people who had been, along with him, Communist Party members in the Group Theater in the 1930's. Mr. Kazan's autobiography, "Elia Kazan: A Life," has recently been published by Alfred A. Knopf. Yes, Jim Carrey was shut out of the best actor category and Shakespeare in Love got more nods than expected. But overall there seemed to be no great injustice. Or was there? If you listen to Academy member Bernard Gordon, a former "blacklisted screenwriter", you will find a very different view. He is outraged that the Academy is paying tribute to one of America's foremost film-makers, 89-year-old Elia Kazan, by giving him an honorary Oscar on March 2. The decision was made unanimously by the board of the Academy early in January. Kazan is an accomplished film-maker. He created such cinematic classics as A Streetcar named Desire (1951), On the Waterfront (1954) and East of Eden (1955). But his name will be forever linked with the dark days of the anti-Communist purges, or so-called "witch hunts" carried out by Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Senator McCarthy: Led anti-Communist drive In April, 1952, Kazan co-operated with the Committee, admitting he had been a member of the Communist party and naming names. Among liberals in Hollywood it was seen as an act of total betrayal, adding to the hundreds of already "blacklisted" screenwriters and other professionals who were being thrown out of work.
