In the early morning hours of March 21, 1999, Hollywood was completing the final preparations for its annual celebration of itself. Workers were laying red carpet and polishing huge statues. Cameramen and reporters jockeyed for position to catch glimpses of Hollywood's royalty as they arrived at the Academy Awards. Over these images we hear news reports that set the stage for what promised to be a uniquely controversial evening.
There was the normal buzz about Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Outfit. But this year, along with the manufactured glitz and glamour, there was an anger and vitriol nearly fifty years old. Elia Kazan, one of America's great directors, was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, and this honor had divided Hollywood.
Now eighty-nine years old, Kazan's impressive body of work includes such late 1940s and early 50s films as ON THE WATERFRONT, EAST OF EDEN, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, and A FACE IN THE CROWD. On the surface, the controversy is straightforward. In 1952, Kazan appeared before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and named eight of his old friends from the Group Theater who in the 1930s, along with him, had been members of the American Communist Party.
Many in Hollywood are still outraged about that time in U.S. history when people who were blacklisted by the studios-writers, directors, and actors-never worked again, fled the country, worked under aliases, or even, in one extreme case, committed suicide.

Further marked by compelling personal stories, Kazan's films also showcased career-defining performances by such 1950s film icons as Marlon Brando James Dean and Natalie Wood Over the course of his film career, nine performers earned Academy Awards under Kazan's direction, leading to his reputation as Hollywood's preeminent "actors' director" of the period (read Teresa Wright on Kazan ); only

Elia Kazan (1909-2003) - Elia Kazanjoglous American stage and film director, whose best-known works include the Oscar winning films GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1948) and ON THE WATERFRONT (1954). Many of Elia Kazan's works have social or political theme. From 1945 to 1961 Kazan was one of the giants of American cinema, who lost many friends, when he offered names to the House Un-American Activities Committee. 'Since talent is so often the scar tissue over a wound, perhaps I had more than most men. Study those you admire for what they've accomplished, and you may be able to identify the painful and costly events that made them despair for a time but that, in the end, they had to thank for the fortitude of spirit that made it possible for them to achieve what they did.' (from Elia Kazan: A Life Elia Kazan was born in Istanbul (according to some sources Kayseri) of Greek parentage. In 1913, at the age of four, his family emigrated to the US and settled in New York City, where his father, George Kazanjoglous, became a rug merchant. Kazan's father expected that his son would go into the family business, but his mother, Athena, encouraged Kazan to make his own decisions. Kazan attended public schools in New York City and New Rochelle, N.Y. After graduating from Williams College, Massachusetts, Kazan studied drama at Yale. In the 1930s Kazan acted with New York's Group Theater. Its other members included among others Lee Strasberg, Clifford Odets, and Stella and Luther Adler. During this period Kazan earned his nickname 'Gadg,' short for Gadget - he never learned to love the name. For about 19 months in 1934-36, Kazan was a member of a secret Communist cell.

    Hollywood honors Elia Kazan
    Filmmaker and informer
By David Walsh 20 February 1999 Part 1:
The decision to give Elia Kazan an award
"I do not hate you at all. You are simply not of my kind. You had the choice, my dear fellow, between nobility and a career. You made your choice. Be happy with it, but leave me in peace." Mephisto , Klaus Mann The Academy board's January 7 decision, by a unanimous vote, to give Kazan an award has been for the most part warmly received in the media. David Freeman in the Los Angeles Times January 19, in a piece entitled "Kazan's Works May Now Outweigh His Transgressions," writes: "This award would have been unlikely without the end of the Cold War. Communism as an international force is spent. HUAC itself seems out of a black-and-white past. Though there are divisive issues today, the economy is good; Hollywood's dominion in popular entertainment has never been stronger. It's a good time to set the house in order." The headline of Bernard Weinraub's January 24 article in the New York Times says a good deal: "Time Frees the Hollywood One." Weinraub argues that the award "will not only crown Kazan's career, but, in many ways, spell the end of the tormented legacy of the Hollywood blacklist." In a particularly foul piece ("A Salute to Elia Kazan") in the
