    Status: False.
    [PRWeb, 2004]
May 16, 1984, most of the world believed that we had lost a comedic legend forever. This has turned out to be what will inevitably be known as the greatest comic prank ever conceived. Andy Kaufman, by all accounts, is alive and well at age 55 and is now living in New York City on the upper west side. To his loyal supporters and fans, Andy says "sorry about faking my death," in a recent interview with ABC News at his apartment. In order to reach legendary comic status and seal his place in the history of performance art, he said it was "necessary to go away for twenty years."

Origins: One would be hard-pressed to think of any other entertainer who sowed as much doubt about his true character than comedian Andy Kaufman did in the 1970s and 1980s. He adopted multiple personas and stayed in character even when he was off-stage. He performed as other people. Or he had other people perform as him. Or maybe he was performing as other people pretending to be him. He staged tantrums and altercations so convincingly that audiences were left wondering whether his

It's not easy being bigger than Jesus right now. I'm actually getting death threats from a few of the non-believers. Don't worry, I forgive you.
If I ever mysteriously stop posting anymore, it's either because one of them got to me, or I'm just too busy on my national Starbucks and Wal-Mart tour.
Hopefully I'll get to make my first public television appearance before I would have to go into hiding or permanent touring of the country again. Posted by Blogger at 2:19 PM 943 comments

Why does anyone care if it's really him or not? What's the point of all the nasty names?
Zmuda and Lynne took out full-page ads to remind Andy of the date, and his promise to them, right? Everything they've done in the past 20 years, everything that Andy did in the 35 years before that, what was the point of it all? What was the point of Andy Kaufman's life?
    Have fun.
So maybe this isn't really him. Maybe it is. But either way, I'm still smiling.
He's having fun. And because he's having fun, I am too. I wish that you could all, for just one second, let yourselves have fun with this.

David Letterman: On April 5th, 1982, in Memphis, Tennessee, Andy Kaufman, the actor-comedian, and Intergender Wrestling champion, had his first wrestling match with a member of his own sex. With anything involving andy kaufman, people tend to seek deeper meaning. But sometimes a banana is just a banana. And sometimes wrestling is just wrestling
By THOMAS NORD © The Courier-Journal
From Dec. 18, 1999 Jim Carrey stars at Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon." T here have been various attempts to explain why the strange and funny man went to Memphis, Tenn. He was crazy (not "ha ha" crazy, but seriously insane). He was washed up and looking for work. He was using those poor fools for yet another one of his stunts. Those explanations are much more complicated than need be. With anything involving Andy Kaufman, people tend to seek deeper meaning. But sometimes a banana is just a banana. And sometimes wrestling is just wrestling. "Andy Kaufman loved wrestling," said Danny Davis, now 17 years removed from those chaotic nights at Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, which was to hardcore wrestling what New York's CBGB was to punk rock. "He had a lot of respect for wrestling and the people in wrestling. He knew Memphis was the place where just about anything could happen." Indeed.

    in Relationships
He is very sensitive, cautious, and shy about showing others his feelings. Though he may love and care for someone a great deal, Andy Kaufman rarely expresses those feelings openly and freely. Very often Kaufman's love for someone will be expressed by trying to help them, doing something tangible to benefit them, or serving them in some way. It is also difficult for him to receive warmth, affection, or appreciation, for he often feels that he does not really deserve it or that "they do not really mean it". Kaufman can therefore seem rather cool and aloof, much more so than he feels. A deeply ingrained critical attitude often makes Andy difficult to live with. Andy Kaufman needs to learn to be gentler and less of a perfectionist with others and with himself.

Seth Schultz is the director of The Real Andy Kaufman , a documentary capturing a performance by Andy Kaufman at a Catskills resort in late 1979. The performance itself is highly entertaining and includes Andy's hilarious version of the song "My Way" and ernest offerings from various members of Andy Kaufman's very own family! The film is also sprinkled with candid remembrances of other comedians that worked with Andy Kaufman. And if that weren't enough, the Real Andy Kaufman ends with a rare, unguarded interview with the real Andy Kaufman.
What is your affiliation with Andy?
Just like Bob Zmuda got to do?
Yeah, well, you saw Andy, and you wanted to sort of be like the Man of La Mancha's Sancho? The one who would help him with his horse and his pack. In a way it was like serving a lord when you saw him. It was great.
Well, what I meant was that Andy met Bob Zmuda in character. The story was that Andy got him to help him load stage props into his car while playing Foreign Man, and then, as Andy drove away, he broke character saying "Sucker!!" or something like that. On first meeting, Andy was playing it up in character to Bob, and I wonder if he did the same thing to you?

Now, 15 years after his death, understanding him is, if anything, harder. Kaufman was the most unconventional comic during the late '70s and early '80s, devising strange little routines that often made, at best, only a kind of oblique sense and sometimes carried more than a whiff of hostility toward his audience. Even his regular stint on the hugely popular "Taxi" didn't dilute him: He channeled the weirdness of his stand-up act into his character, the immigrant-
