James Whale, 1931) made him a legend but it did little - or perhaps too much - for his career; he is far more memorable as Ned in The Criminal Code (d. Howard Hawks) earlier the same year. The actor (born William Henry Pratt in London) began his screen career in the US in 1916 with The Dumb Girl of Portici (d. Lois Weber) and, in all, made 164 feature films, mostly American. The British-made The Ghoul (d. T. Hayes Hunter, 1933) was no doubt influenced by his US success in the horror genre, as were some later UK appearances. He also had a TV series, Colonel March of Scotland Yard (ATV, 1954-1955), three episodes of which were compiled as the feature, Colonel March Investigates (d. Cy Endfield, 1953). Boris Karloff "An Evening With Boris Karloff And His Friends" (Decca, DL74833, 1967)
A cool merging of monster talent here; Forrest J. Ackerman writes a script that Boris Karloff reads with Verne Langdon Milt Larsen producing! This LP is a collection of synopses for the classic Universal films that Karloff figured in so largely, and mixed in with his narration are sound bites and musical cues from Dracula Frankenstein The Mummy The Bride of Frankenstein The Son of Frankenstein The Wolf Man , and The House of Frankenstein ; all of which must've blown the collective minds of monster kids dwelling in the pre-video-on-demand days of 1967. Forrest J. Ackerman's script (famously written in one sitting) does a nice job of stitching together all the parts, and while the whole thing only lasts about 24 minutes it manages to give an appropriately grand sense of status to the initial Universal horror cycle that was then still setting the tone for most monster entertainment.
Now hopefully I just didn't go too overboard in designating the tracks on my rip I swear I was just trying to remain true to the banding on my LP!

Boris Karloff Trivia
He was the original inspiration for the first illustrations of the Incredible Hulk
In contrast to the image he presented in most of his films, the private Karloff was, by every account, a quiet, bookish man off- screen. A true gentleman, he had many friends, both in and out of show business, and he was particularly fond of children. For the latter, among other things, he recorded many successful albums of children's stories.
Often thought of as a very large man, he was in reality a slim man of medium height. He wore huge lifts and much padding to give him the massive look as Frankenstein's monster.
Raised rare Bedlington Terriers while he lived in Brentwood, CA. One day he was walking them with his four-year old daughter Sara Karloff when they broke free and they ran up to an inebriated man stumbling down the street. The drunk begged Karloff for a ride to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, claiming he "just saw three sheep bark!" Karloff obliged.
In 1931, Boris Karloff took out insurance against premature aging from his fright make-up.

biography
Born William Henry Pratt in London, England, in November 1887, Boris Karloff was born into a family of British diplomats. He married stage actress Olive Wilton in 1909, and Karloff himself was bitten by the acting bug. The marriage didn't last long, and he soon left Britain for North America, where he honed his skills as an actor. He made his film bow in 1916, and by 1919 Karloff was appearing in films frequently. Throughout the 1920s, Karloff acted in dozens of films but never had the breakthrough role he needed. But in 1931, when Bela Lugosi turned down the role of the monster in the Universal Studios film Frankenstein , Karloff finally found success.
With frequent costar Bela Lugosi
Universal's horror films kept the struggling studio afloat in the difficult times of Depression-era America. Studio executives hit upon the idea of putting their two most famous horror actors, Karloff and Bela Lugosi , in a film to boost box office revenues. Karloff and Lugosi first costarred in the 1934 film The Black Cat . The film was indeed a success, ensuring Karloff and Lugosi would be teamed again. In total, they made seven films together, including

Celebrating Boris Karloff, the Monster and the Man
By TERRENCE RAFFERTY Published: February 3, 2006 HE was billed, in the opening credits of the movie that made him a star, as "?". Seventy minutes later, the end credits of James Whale's "Frankenstein" gave a name to the unrecognizable actor who had incarnated (if that's the word) the unnatural creation of Dr. F., and a fine monster-movie name it was: Boris Karloff . The mysterious Karloff was in fact a middle-aged, middlingly successful English character actor (born William Henry Pratt), skillful and professional enough to have appeared in dozens of pictures in the previous 15 years, yet stubbornly obscure: when he was suggested as a possibility for "Frankenstein," Whale is said to have responded, "Boris — who?"
