He began publishing his poetry in Chile when he was 16. At this time he worked alongside the Chilean poets, Nicanor Parra and Enrique Lihn . He developed an interest in puppetry and mime. At 17, he debuted as an actor and a year later he created the pantomime troupe, Teatro Mimico. In 1953 Jodorowsky wrote his first play, El Minotauro. That same year he traveled to Paris to study pantomime with Etienne Decroux , the teacher of Marcel Marceau . The next year he joined Marcel Marceau theatre troupe; the performances realized during this collaboration toured worldwide. After performing in Mexico in 1960, Jodorowsky decided to continue his stay in order to pursue other theatrical endeavors.

In 1942 he moved to Santiago where he attended university, was a circus clown and a puppeteer. In 1955 he went to Paris and studied mime with Marcel Marceau. He also befriended the surrealists Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal, and in 1962 these three created the "Panic Movement" in homage to the mythical god Pan. As part of this group Jodorowsky wrote several books and theatrical pieces. But Jodorowsky would also face local prejudices wherever he lived in subsequent years due to external perceptions of his nationality. When he was eight years old, his family relocated to the capital city of Santiago. There he became fascinated with anarchism and eventually attended college for two years, studying psychology and philosophy. Jodorowsky then dropped out and alternately worked as a circus clown, a stage actor and a theatre director, developing strong interests in marionettes and mime through his intense fascination with physical expression. The art of mime allowed Jodorowsky to do away with an actor's reliance on written theatrical texts, instead foregrounding the way that actors themselves produce meaning. By age 23, he had formed his own theatre company with 50 actors, but feeling that he could learn no more in Chile, he abandoned his local success to pursue an education in France. At this time he also severed many ties with his family and this assisted him in his firm repudiation of a specific sense of nationality.

By Al Weisel A still from El Topo John Lennon once said director Alejandro Jodorowsky 's El Topo was his favorite film and convinced his manager, Allen Klein, to buy it. Klein loved El Topo so much he didn't let anyone else to see it. In an interview with Roger Ebert in 1990, Jodorowsky said Klein told him, " El Topo is like wine, all the time it gets better. I am waiting until you die, and then I am going to have a fortune." The hallucinogenic western starring the director as a gunfighter in black leather avenging the massacre of a town's citizens became an underground cult film, but hasn't been distributed legally for more than 30 years as the Jodorowsky and Klein feuded. Although pirated video versions of El Topo have been available, the film can now finally be seen on the big screen in a remastered version that premiered at the
