The Writing of Fiddler on the Roof
Commentary and writing tips by Noel Katz If you can only pick one model to study, just one lesson in traditional musical theatre writing, choose Fiddler on the Roof . Everything in it contributes to the storytelling; not a word is wasted. Every line is either funny or moving in some way. The show was the final original musical in the stunning career of director-choreographer Jerome Robbins, who demanded writers provide clear and expressive narratives. His previous two creations, Gypsy and West Side Story, are well worth studying as well. The story of a Jewish family in czarist Russia is exotic, but also manages to be universal. Wherever the work is performed, people embrace it as their story. When it was first done in Japan, one of the creators was asked, "How did you know so much about the Japanese people?" There were similar reactions in Finland, South Africa, Brazil "all over the world. The opening number, "Tradition," explainswhat's unfamiliar about the world ("We always keep our heads covered") as well as what's common to all societies ("Who does Mama teach to mend and tend and fix, preparing me to marry whoever Papa picks? The daughters!"). The song introduces various characters, and, most delightfully, the four segments of families sing in counterpoint. Once the goal of upholding traditions is established, the rest of the play shows how they get dissolved. The eldest daughter wants to marry for love, rather than money, and her father must deliberate between what his heart and his head are telling him to do. Then, he must sell the idea to his wife with an elaborate deception. This first dissolution of a tradition is simultaneously emotional and comic.

We talk to movie legend Norman Jewison
by Caroline Westbrook
The legendary Toronto-born film director talks exclusively to jewish.co.uk about the 30th anniversary re-release of Fiddler On The Roof and takes us through a career which also includes Rollerball, Moonstruck, The Hurricane and the Oscar-winning In The Heat Of The Night.
Do you have fond memories of making Fiddler On The Roof?
Was Fiddler your first musical?

It was my first musical but I had done a lot of musicals on TV. I was really excited to have the opportunity to make Fiddler. There was a lot of argument over my casting of Topol, because the Americans all wanted Zero Mostel. I didn't use him because I thought he was too American and I wanted a first generation Russian Jew and I got one! They brought him to London to do the London production, so that's where I first saw him. He was far too young though! I used to pluck white hair out of my head and out of my beard to put in his eyebrows. Every day they were plucking hair out of me to try to make him look older!
Why do you think Fiddler On The Roof has such lasting appeal? Here we are thirty years on and it's being re-released.

Norman Jewison Detailed Biography
Norman Frederick Jewison, CC, BA, LL.D (born July 21, 1926) is a Canadian film director, producer, and actor. He was born and raised in Toronto, grew up in the Toronto Beach area (where he is still very much revered and a 'beacher' in perpetuity), attended Kew Beach Public School and Malvern Collegiate, both in the 'Beach' andVictoria College, in the University of Toronto. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, in the early 1950s he embarked on a trip through the southern United States, where he was appalled by the open racism and inequality. This experience gave him a lifelong concern with racial issues and discrimination that can be clearly seen in many of his films, including the acclaimed In the Heat of the Night. In 1981, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and was promoted to Companion in 1991. In 1988, Jewison founded the Canadian Film Centre, an advanced film and television training institute located in Toronto, Ontario. He has been nominated for the best director Academy Award on a number of occasions, but has never won. In 1998, he was awarded The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, awarded periodically at the Academy Awards ceremonies to "Creative producers, whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production." For his contribution to the motion picture industry, Norman Jewison has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.
