Hale Irwin Commits to 2007 Bank of America Championship - Tournament Director West says tournament player field best ever
For Immediate Release, May 17, 2007:
CONCORD, Mass. - By just about any measure, tournament director Tracy West says, the Champions Tour player field for the 2007 Bank of America Championship is one of the best ever, and to prove the point, she announced the commitment of Hale Irwin to the field for the tournament to be held June 18-24 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord.
The field includes World Golf Hall of Fame members, players new to the Champions Tour, top Tour money leaders and former Bank of America Championship winners, including 2005 champion Mark McNulty.
Irwin's commitment brings the number of World Golf Hall of Fame members competing at Nashawtuc to six: Irwin, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson, Nick Price, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson.
This will be 39-time PGA TOUR and nine-time Champions Tour winner Tom Watson’s first appearance at the Bank of America Championship, and he’ll be joined by first-timers Chip Beck, Jay Haas, Scott Hoch, Price and Curtis Strange. This actually is Strange's second time on the list of tournament competitors, but he didn’t get to play last year, as the 2006 tournament became only the second tournament in Champions Tour history to be canceled because of inclement weather.
Well represented this year are the Tour's all-time top money leaders: Irwin (1), Kite (3), Price (5), Haas (6), Hoch (8), Watson (9), Larry Nelson (10), Craig Stadler (11), Bruce Fleisher (12), Dana Quigley (17), Trevino (18), Bruce Lietzke (20), Allen Doyle (21), Dave Stockton (22), Tom Jenkins (23) and Bob Gilder (24).

Tournament History
The Toshiba Classic has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting events on the Champions Tour. Click here for Tournament Trivia The tournament combines one of the strongest fields on the entire year with a challenging golf course, a recipe that always seems to result in riveting play. In nine years, the Toshiba Classic has had three playoffs and only twice has the champion posted more than a two-stroke margin of victory. All the big names have appeared at the Toshiba Classic: Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gary McCord, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Dave Stockton, Bruce Fleisher, Jim Colbert, Allen Doyle, Lanny Wadkins, Gary Player and more. And when they do battle in Orange County's only official PGA Tour-sanctioned event, it's always something to remember. Here are some of the highlights:
Jay Haas blew past Hale Irwin’s 5-year-old tournament scoring record finishing at 19 under par 194 as the tournament celebrated its 10th Anniversary.
Brad Bryant birdied five of his final eight holes, including the last hole of regulation to finish with a final-round, 5-under-par 66, a 9-under-par 204 finish.

Far Hills, N.J. - Past champions Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and Tom Watson have accepted special exemptions to compete in the 2003 U.S. Open, the United States Golf Association has announced. The U.S. Open will be played from June 12-15 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. The offer of special exemptions was taken by a vote of the USGA Executive Committee.
Irwin, 57, has played in 33 Opens, the last 32 of them consecutively, dating back to 1971. He has the longest active streak for Opens played. His first U.S. Open was the 1966 championship at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., in which he completed 72 holes at 305 (25 over par) as an amateur. Only Jack Nicklaus and Gene Sarazen played in more or as many Opens, with 44 and 33, respectively.
Irwin won his Open titles in 1974, 1979 and 1990. His victory in 1990, at age 45, made him the oldest U.S. Open champion. In addition to his three Open titles, Irwin has won two U.S. Senior Opens, in 1998 and 2000. Irwin also received special exemptions in 1990 and 2002. He is the only player to win an Open on a special exemption, in 1990.

Haas, Roberts set to duel again on Champions
    Published: January 17, 2008
In 2006, Haas swept the money title, player of the year award and Charles Schwab Cup. Actually, Roberts lost the Schwab Cup when he missed a 4 1/2-foot par putt on the final hole of the season. Haas repeated as player of the year and the tour's top money-winner last year, but Roberts' strong finish helped him capture the Schwab Cup and its $1 million annuity. The third round between the Champions Tour stars begins on Friday in the MasterCard Championship, the first of 29 events this season on the 50-and-over tour. "I'm sure he's trying to beat me as bad as I'm trying to beat him and everybody else in the field," said Roberts, coming off a two-win season including a victory at the Senior Players Championship. Roberts finished fourth at Hualalai last year and won in his 2006 debut with a 25-under 191 total, breaking the tour's 54-hole record in relation to par.

As the last Royal Birkdale Open champion, MARK O’MEARA will defend the title he won in 1998 when the Open Championship returns to the Southport links for the first time in a decade next July. Daily Post golf writer Trevor Peake caught up with the popular American for an exclusive interview in Morocco, when he crossed the Atlantic to play in the Hassan II Trophy HAVING turned 50 last January, Mark O’Meara has played most of his golf on the senior Champions Tour in America this year. But he loves to play links golf and, as a past champion, the Open will always be a part of his schedule. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great challenge,” said O’Meara. “Birkdale obviously has a very special place in my heart of all the Open Championship venues. “The Open is played on firm courses and with the winds playing a part, which dictates how the players are going to play. It’s a sort of golf I really love to play.
