Search Anna Irwin Young Click for another photo November 25, 1873 - September 3, 1920 Reprinted with permission from Lest We Forget: An Account of Agnes Scott College, Professor Anna Irwin Young was born in the greater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area on November 25, 1873. Her father, the Rev. Samuel Young, a native of Ireland, was at the time pastor of the Sandusky Street Church in Allegheny just across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh. In the middle 1890's Mr. Young moved his family to Atlanta where he lived for the remainder of his life. For two years beginning in 1893, Anna Young was a student in Agnes Scott Institute, apparently completing her work in 1895. In 1898 she was appointed to the Department of Mathematics, rising to be Professor of Mathematics, a post she held until her death in 1920. She also served as Librarian from 1898 to 1902. When Agnes Scott became a college in 1905-1906, she continued in the college faculty; however, feeling that she should have a degree, she took the requisite courses and received her B.A. degree in 1910 although while she was pursuing this work she was concurrently Professor of Mathematics. Professor Young took a leave of absence in 1913-1914 during which time she received her M.A. degree from Columbia University. [In 1916 she became a charter member of the Mathematical Association of America.] She died quite unexpectedly of pneumonia on September 3, 1920, while visiting relatives in Pittsburgh.

More recently, these and other themes were featured in a dozen episodes of Nickelodeon's . The popular rediscovery of Scott's original novelty jazz recordings (which began with the 1992 Columbia CD release Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights ) led to a belated reappraisal of Scott's timeless - and long forgotten - genius... Raymond Scott's music has been covered by the Kronos Quartet, Rush, They Might Be Giants, Don Byron, Louis Armstrong, Gwar, Benny Goodman, Foetus, Devo, Holland's Metropole Orchestra, the Beau Hunks, and countless other admirers. TOP OF THE NEWS As part of University-wide reorganization, last fall the faculty were urged by the Dean to consider alternative administrative structures. Since that time the issue has been a very vigorously debated subject within the Department, culminating with a May vote to pursue merger with the Department of Plant Pathology and Weed Science. The outline for such a change was developed during months of meetings with representatives of PPWS by the FLEAS committee ( F aculty L ooking at E xciting A lternative S tructures), including Lou Bjostad, Frank Peairs , and Elaine Roberts . Since the vote, the process has begun winding its way through the University system and appears likely to become effective by the end of the year. Much still needs to be developed, including such fundamental issues as the name of the new department and its administrative leadership. And while we mourn the loss of our independent department, the new arrangement does provide some advantages and new opportunities. One benefit that has already been noted is that we finally now have enough people to field a softball team! Graduation was replete with departing (or recycling) members of the Department.
