Debunking the moon myth
Contrary to legend, no 'M' flag on Moon
By Leah Graboski on Harm Buning, professor emeritus of aerospace engineering, holds a montage of Apollo 15 memorabilia including a University flag that orbited the moon in Apollo's command module, in the Fran§ois-Xavier Bagnoud Building yesterday. The montage, personally dedicated to Buning by the mission's crew, also includes a mission patch and a photo of Apollo 15 commander James Irwin on the moon. (DAVID TUMAN/Daily)
You know the campus legend that says there's a Michigan flag on the Moon?
It's not true.
Here's what is: Two alumni set foot on the lunar surface on the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. They established a chapter of the University's alumni association on the Moon. They carried with them about 20 flags into orbit.

26 July 1971 13:34 GMT. Landing Date Flight Time : 12.30 days. Flight Up : Apollo 15. Flight Back : Apollo 15. Call Sign : Endeavour/Falcon. Crew Irwin Scott Worden Backup Crew Brand Gordon Schmitt Location of Capsule : U.S. Air Force Museum, Dayton, OH. Program : Apollo. Of note: First use of lunar rover on moon. On the lighter side: Prior to leaving the lunar surface, Scott performed a simple experiment that Galileo had proposed three hundred years earlier - he dropped a hammer and falcon feather at the same time, and on the airless moon they hit the ground at the same moment. "How about that - Mr Galileo was correct" ground control, seeing the dust-covered astronauts on the surface, quipped 'my kids don't get as dirty as you are' the reply: 'Yeah, but I bet they're not having as much fun, either'. What went wrong: One of the three main parachutes failed, causing a hard but survivable splashdown. Apollo 15 (AS-510) with astronauts David R. Scott, Alfred M. Worden, and James B. Irwin aboard was launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, KSC, at 9:34 a.m. EDT July 26. The spacecraft and S-IVB combination was placed in an earth parking orbit 11 minutes 44 seconds after liftoff. Activities during earth orbit and translunar injection (insertion into the trajectory for the moon) were similar to those of previous lunar landing missions. Translunar injection was at about 12:30 p.m., with separation of the CSM from the LM/S-IVB/IU at 12:56 p.m. At 1:08 p.m., onboard color TV showed the docking of the CSM with the LM.

Registration Assessment Assignment News and Information New Referee Uniforms - The Referee Program of US Soccer Federation (USSF) has recently announced a new uniform color and new uniform design for referees. We have received a number of questions from currently registered referees about the new uniforms. US Soccer has addressed this and we have listed some of the more important points here. For more information, visit: http://ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_4849668.html
The previous jersey design is perfectly acceptable. You should not feel obligated to discard these still-approved referee jerseys in order to purchase the new design. Purchases of the new uniform may be made when you need a new jersey or you want to add an additional color. This is also true for the socks.
Referees may all work games in the jerseys you have. It is acceptable if one or two referees have the previous design and the others have the new design. It is more important that they be the same color. A referee assessor may not deduct points for a crew that has mismatched uniform designs, provided that the uniforms feature approved designs and are the same color.
There is no date by which the old jerseys will be "phased out." To be clear, both the old and new designs comply with the "Standards of Dress and Appearance" listed in the referee administrative handbook – the only differences are aesthetic.
