The star of films as varied as Lion King and Inland Empire will play the role of Tory prime minister Harold Macmillan in Never So Good. The play, written by Howard Brenton, will cover the period of the Profumo Affair and the Night of the Long Knives which saw behind the scenes machinations to sack Macmillan's cabinet ministers. Nicholas Hynter, artistic director at the National Theatre, said: "It is a play about democratic politics. It explores what kind of compromises are required from those who reach the top in democratic politics - both personal and idealistic compromises." The play was announced at a press conference today to lay out the programme for the year ahead. | |
