Place: Allentown, Pennsylvania
L ido Anthony Iacocca was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on October 25, 1924. His parents were Italian immigrants who, by example, taught the young Iacocca the values of hard work and perseverance. As a boy, Iacocca earned his own spending money as he went through his school years, and then was accepted as a student at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lehigh, and went on to earn a master's degree in engineering from Princeton University in 1946. In that same year, Iacocca accepted a job with Ford Motor Company. It was during this period that Lido Anthony Iacocca decided that he would benefit by making his name more common, and from this point on he was known as Lee Iacocca. W W ithin five years, Lee Iacocca had turned Chrysler around. The country accepted Chrysler's K-cars, and Chrysler was able to repay its loans. In 1984, Chrysler introduced the minivan, and its success ensured Chrysler's position as a viable American automaker. The minivans became one of the country's best-selling vehicles, and Lee Iacocca became one of the most highly paid executives in the country. Lee Iacocca retired as Chrysler's chief executive in 1992. F ind out what made Lee Iacocca tick. Purchase his autobiography from Amazon.com. Click

An excerpt from Iacocca's new book - read the entire excerpt Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."
Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

He was educated at Lehigh and Princeton universities, receiving degrees in industrial and mechanical engineering. He began working as an engineering trainee at the Ford Motor Company in 1946; switched to sales; worked his way up to assistant sales manager of the Philadelphia district in 1953 and sales manager in Washington, D.C., in 1956; and in 1960 succeeded Robert S. McNamara as vice president and general manager. With an intuitive flair for the wants of the buying public, Iacocca developed the sporty Mustang in 1964, which broke sales records, and later the popular Mercury Cougar and luxurious Lincoln Mark III. By 1970 Iacocca had been named president of Ford. Summarily dismissed from that position in 1978 because of deteriorating relations with Henry Ford II, Iacocca was immediately hired as president and chief executive officer of Chrysler Corporation, a company plagued with management and sales problems. With his practical know-how and forceful personality, he obtained U.S. government loan assistance, cut costs, introduced the popular K-cars, repaid all loans within five years, and turned the company around. His Chrysler minivan, introduced in 1984, became one of the best-selling vehicles in North America. In the process Iacocca became one of the most highly paid U.S. executives. He retired at the end of 1992 but remained head of Chrysler's executive committee. He wrote two best-selling books

Ex-Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca and rapper Snoop Dogg ride a modified golf cart in a new Chrysler ad. NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Lee Iacocca's newest spot for Chrysler includes rap star Snoop Dogg, as the auto maker tries to reach out to a younger group of buyers. Iacocca, who frequently appeared in Chrysler commercials during his tenure as chairman from 1979 to 1992, returned to pitch the company's cars in July, hyping its offer to sell vehicles at the employee-discount price to the general public. The latest spot, which numerous media reports say should start Saturday, includes Iacocca and Snoop Dogg, whose hip-hop speaking manner in the spot seems to confuse Iacocca.

The World According to Lee: Vintage Iacocca, still stirring the automotive pot in new book
Photography by Florian Schneider GetDiggUrl( location.href ); With Chrysler having been purchased by Cerberus and his appearance in recent television commercials (alongside Snoop Dogg, of all partners), Lee Iacocca is again a topic of conversation in the automotive universe. But his sphere of thought extends well beyond the car business. He's been doing some conversing of his own lately in the form of a new book. The retired Ford president and Chrysler chairman is as outspoken as ever and is qualified to be so. Here are just two opinion- chocked morsels from his latest tome, "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?" Matt Stone THE WORST DECISION I EVER MADE I'll always believe that if I hadn't chosen Bob Eaton to succeed me as chief executive at Chrysler, it would still be a strong, profitable, American car company. Eaton came to Chrysler from GM, and he got high marks on paper. But he just didn't get it. Never did. That was my mistake. I can't even blame the board. They trusted me. Eaton was my call, and I screwed up. Then, a couple of years after I retired, I inadvertently helped trigger a panic in Eaton that led to the whole sorry mess. In 1995, the billionaire financier Kirk Kerkorian, who owned 10 percent of Chrysler stock, came to me with an interesting idea. He wanted to buy Chrysler and take it private. He thought the stock was greatly undervalued. Kerkorian convinced me that taking Chrysler private was a win-win deal for everyone involved. We'd offer Chrysler shareholders $55 a share-a 40 percent premium over the market price of $39. Five percent of the company would be given to the management. And, most important, 20 percent of the company would be given to the workers. I believed that this would not be a hostile takeover, that Eaton was on board, and that the cash was in hand. But this proved not to be true. The deal never got off the ground. What it did do was trigger a panic in Eaton. He became obsessed with warding off any future takeover bids.

Lee Iacocca's Pinto: A fiery failure; Exploding gas tanks killed and maimed hundreds and wrecked Ford's reputation
Automotive News June, 2003 Byline: Robert Sherefkin Ford Motor Co. cannot afford another Pinto. Neither can the auto industry. Remember the Pinto? It was one of the industry's hottest-selling subcompacts during the 1970s. Its success enhanced the reputation of Lee Iacocca - until an estimated 500 deaths and hundreds of injuries were linked to a faulty design that made the gasoline tank vulnerable to explosion after rear-end collisions. On June 9, 1978, Ford agreed to recall 1.5 million Ford Pinto and 30,000 Mercury Bobcat sedan and hatchback models. Iacocca was fired the following month.

Lee Iacocca was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Nicola and Antoinette Iacocca, Italian immigrants. His given name is Lido Anthony Iacocca.
Iacocca graduated as an industrial engineer from Lehigh University. After graduating from Lehigh, he started a career at the Ford Motor Company as an engineer. Unhappy with the actual job engineers had, he decided to pursue a career in sales for Ford. He introduced many unique ideas during the 1950s, including financing. Through these ideas, he gained respectability and moved up through the ranks of Ford. Eventually, Lee Iacocca became a senior executive at Ford, where he had previously been responsible for the design of the Ford Mustang, the Mercury Cougar, and the Lincoln Mark III. He also had ideas for a small compact car with front wheel drive and good gas mileage. However, this idea was rejected by Henry Ford II. Eventually Lee became the President of the Ford Motor Division, but was forced to leave in 1978 because of a conflict with Henry Ford.
After leaving Ford, Lee was courted by the Chrysler corporation, which was on the verge of going out of business. Lee was reluctant to make this move, but in the end, took the position. He rebuilt the entire company from the ground up, laying off many workers, selling Chrysler's loss-making European division to Peugeot, and bringing in his old friends from Ford, most of whom had retired. He still realized the company would go out of business if it did not receive a significant amount of money to turn the company around. This led to him going before the United States Congress in 1979 and asking for money. Most thought this was an unprecedented move, but Lee pointed to the government bail-outs of the airline and railroad industry, and argued that more jobs would be lost. In the end, he got the money from the government.
