Biography: Lee A. Iacocca retired as chairman and CEO of Chrysler Corporation at the end of 1992 after forty-six years in the auto industry. He began his career at Ford Motor Company and rose from management trainee to president, becoming known as the "Father of the Mustang." Mr. Iacocca became president of Chrysler in 1978 and chairman and CEO a year later. He led the company from the brink of bankruptcy through the most dramatic comeback in American business history. As Mr. Iacocca says, "It seems I've learned all of life's lessons from one thing - change. Change is often scary but in the world we live in change is one of the few things you can count on." Early in his Chrysler career, the company introduced a totally new vehicle concept - the minivan - which solidified the firm's economic position. Later on, he led a reinvention of the Chrysler organization by staking the company's future on the creation of a state-of-the-art design center which allowed implementation of a revolutionary new team approach to the design and manufacture of vehicles. These vehicles are the Saturn line, and that center is at the heart of the company's current success. A brilliant speaker, he received 8,000 speaking requests a year while at Chrysler and was the subject of a Time magazine cover story, Why America Loves Listening To Lee.

Lee Iacocca was born October 12, 1924 in Allentown , Pennsylvania . He became an American industrialist and is one of the most well known businessman worldwide. Iacocca is the former chairman of Chrysler Corporation and he also became a passionate advocate of U.S. business exports during the 1980s. After graduating from Leigh University with an industrial engineering degree he was hired by Ford Motor Company and began his career as an engineer. Unhappy as an engineer he changed over to the sales force at Ford and quickly moved up the ladder to product development. While in product development Iacocca successfully developed many automobiles at Ford, including the Ford Mustang. Ultimately, he became the president of Ford Motor Company but his shaky relationship with Henry Ford II forced him out of the company. Iacocca was not without a job long as the Chrysler Corporation was in desperate need and going out of business. However, Iacocca rebuilt Chrysler from the ground up, laid off many employees, and sold the plant in Europe . Despite these moves the company was still in dire straights, so Iacocca made an amazing move by asking Congress for a loan. To the surprise to all, he received it.

Even as a teenager, Lee Iacocca decided that he was going to be an auto company executive and focused his studies in that direction. He first studied mechanical engineering and then, because of bad grades in physics, switched to industrial engineering, picking up several business and psychology courses along the way.

He became chairman of its board of directors in 1979 and CEO in 1980. In a few years, he transformed the number-three automaker from a company near bankruptcy into a highly profitable enterprise. Iacocca turned Chrysler around by reducing expenses, winning approval of $1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees, selling off unprofitable units such as the military tank division, and introducing timely products. In 1984, the company posted profits of $2.4 billion, a total higher than it had made in the previous sixty years combined.
    Business Giant Stumbles
In 1995, Iacocca announced that he was suing Chrysler, claiming that it unlawfully blocked him from exercising $42 million in share options that he had earned while he was the chairman. Before the lawsuit went to trial, Chrysler settled out of court, paying the former CEO $21 million. As he moved into the twenty-first century, Iacocca was still involved in the auto industry, investigating the market for electric cars in California. He even tried to rejoin Chrysler, but after several years of discussion, was turned down by DaimlerChrysler CEO Juergen Schrempp in 2002.

    Richardson's Nod from an Icon
In his book, "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?," Lee Iacocca runs down the list of presidential candidates and perhaps reserves the most praise for New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson - with one obvious caveat. "His biggest challenge will be getting his message out in a crowded field," Iacocca writes. So on Tuesday, the business icon, who officially endorsed Richardson earlier this month, backed up his words with a fund-raiser and press interviews with the presidential candidate at his Bel-Air home. In Iowa polls, Richardson trails Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards, but his campaign is confident that if he places in the top three in the Jan. 3 caucus it will be enough of a surprise jolt to give him momentum for other states. Richardson has made it into the double digits in the state, ahead of Joe Biden and Chris Dodd. "He has been the chief executive of New Mexico for eight years and he has done a helluva job," Iacocca says in an interview from the marble foyer of his mansion. At 83, his voice is a bit softer and less rigorous than in the 1980s, when his turnaround of Chrysler thrust him into the national spotlight. He considered his own bid for the presidency in 1988. "I have followed his career. I have read his books and he makes sense. And competency is the key. I identify that in my book, character and competence, and this man has it."

Instead, you h a v e to inspire the n e x t guy down the line and g e t him to inspire h i s people." ~ Lee Iacocca Called "the John Wayne of the automobile business" by Time magazine , executive Lido Anthony Iacocca (1924-) was born on this day in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the son of Italian immigrants. An innovator and motivator , he began at Ford Motors, marketing the "sporty but inexpensive" '60s Mustang . He moved on to Chrysler as President (1978-1979) and CEO (1979-1992) and gave the world the minivan. "We are continually faced by great opportunities brilliantly disguised as insoluble problems ," he said. Iacocca is perhaps best known for saving Chrysler from bankruptcy. With brilliance and guts, he inspired labor unions to accept wage cuts. "In times of stress and adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something quite positive," he said. Iacocca met with union leaders and boldly told them he had thousands of jobs for $17 an hour, but none at $20. A pay cut or bankruptcy he proposed, having cut his own salary to $1 a year.

    Had Enough?
Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."
Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!
You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore. The President of the United States is given a free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies. Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don't need it). The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq, the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving pom-poms instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of America my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

Lee and Me Lee Iacocca and Rosemary Jarrell I sat in the audience of approximately 300 people in the middle of the car dealership showroom and waited with great anticipation for Lee Iacocca to speak. He was in Phoenix, Arizona to promote his new electric bicycle. I was interested in hearing from a successful CEO who had been a major influence in America. I was so excited about hearing him speak; not because I wanted anything to do with the "E" word (exercise) or the "E" word (electricity), but because I wanted to learn why he was still pushing and shoving his way through life with such zest and zeal. He could easily slow down and become a corporate board member or a consultant for a Fortune 500 corporation. His charisma and energy attracted me to this product unveiling. What could he teach me about setting and achieving goals through my career and through life? I was excited and anxious to hear him speak. Finally, the media hounds pulled out of their huddle and there stood a professionally dressed man who appeared to grin in amusement with all of the fuss. Does he abhor the media frenzy or does he strive to be in the center. Later I found out that he blooms with pride whenever he or his products receive PR. "However, you can't get enough of it for free." he advised me and winked.

Chrysler minivan development and history, 1977-2001
The Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager were first introduced to the world in 1983, but Chrysler had actually started working on them in the early 1970s, with full development starting in 1980. Indeed, one engineer told us that the launch was originally to be in 1981, but that the minivan project was put on hold for the Y-body Imperial (an interesting choice of ever there was one). Burton Bouwkamp, Chrysler's Director of Product Planning from 1968 to 1975, wrote in a 1998 letter to Automotive News (which both parties gave us permission to reprint): In the early and mid-1970s, our Advance Design, Advance Engineering and Advance Product Planning offices designed first generation versions of the mini-van. The scope of the program was to design a station wagon type vehicle that was not derived from another vehicle; i.e. from a passenger car sedan or a commercial van. The first generation designs were rear wheel drive because we did not have front wheel drive engines or transmissions at that time. Product planners, designers and engineers were enthusiastic about the mini-van (which we called a "garageable van") but were unable to get management approval to go forward with a unique product concept which had a special tooling bill (not including facilities) of over $100 million. The first designs never went beyond the clay model, advanced design and seating buck stage - but the interest in the concept in the Design and Product Planning offices at Chrysler continued.

(Photo by Joe Schmelzer) April 22, 2007 You have a new book out called Where Have All the Leaders Gone? Sounds like you think something in America is broken. I'm deeply worried about this country. I think the first step to recovering our greatness is picking strong leaders. I want to get people talking and thinking and, I hope, voting in the next election. You've been all over the map politically, having endorsed George Bush in 2000 and then John Kerry in 2004. Who do you like in '08? Looking at the candidates, I have a favorite trifecta, but I think it's a little early to let that out of the bag. What about current business leaders? So why the auto industry? I also inherited my love of cars from my father. He was nuts about them and owned one of the first Model T's. I actually used to hang out at the local Ford dealership and hoped I would be asked into the Ford Management Program. I was, and the rest, as they say, is history. What's your favorite car you've owned?
